Linotype FontExplorer X sets a new standard for font management software. After several relatively sad years for all font users who were looking for a professional font manager, Linotype is pleased to fill the gap with the new FontExplorer X. Font management has never been so simple, and font sorting, font shopping and font discovery are now more fun than ever. FontExplorer X gives computer users all the font functions they could need, and lets them decide how deeply they wish to dive into various font themes.
Version 1.2.3 fixes among other things some misbehavior in previous versions of FontExplorer X when used under Mac OS X 10.5. It is strongly recommended for all users of Mac OS X 10.5.
Updated features
- The "Clean System Fonts Folder" function now also takes care of those fonts that are part of the System installation of Mac OS X 10.5.
Bug fixes
- System font requests for auto activation caused requesting applications to hang until FontExplorer X is quit. This has been fixed
- Deleting font caches under Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) now works as expected
- Show/Hide Font Collections under Mac OS X 10.5 now works as expected
- Smart Set conditions "contained in" and "not contained in" now work as expected
- Instability (freezes, crashes) with QuarkXPress 6.5 when using the Plug-In have been fixed (new Plug-In v1.41)
Known issues
- System font requests are also handled by the Font Book application under 10.5, this interferes with the auto activation feature of FontExplorer X. To avoid conflicts, turn off "Automatic font activation" in Font Book's preferences.
- With Mac OS X 10.5.0 and 10.5.1 the auto activation feature of FontExplorer does not work. This can be resolved by updating to Mac OS X 10.5.2.
- The 3rd party application PlugSuit 1.5 may cause FontExplorer X to crash when starting. This will be resolved in a future update of PlugSuit. To work around the problem add FontExplorer X to the Excluded Applications list in PlugSuit.
Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later.

BURRO I've just changed over to a new machine. So the path to my fonts has changed -- all those fonts that were not already in my system folder show up as damaged. Is there anyway I can instruct FontExplorer to alter one path, /Volumes/Name01/Resources/FontExplorer_Font_Sets/ /Name01/Resources/FontExplorer_Font_Sets/

MIGUELD The best font manager on Earth. This is what Mac is all about. This is a breath of fresh air if you come from Suitcase Fusion. I love the attention to detail in the program, the icons and widgets, the intuitive design, the responsiveness. I'm gonna buy some fonts on their store to send them some money. They deserve it. MACDOCMIKE Actually this is the BEST app out there for diagnosing font issues I've found since Font Reserve in OS9. The fact that it's free is just icing on the cake. Make sure to turn on Conflicts in the view menu and believe it or not... one font CAN crash your entire system. (regardless of what font-management app you use) This is the most quickly updated font-manager, with plug-ins for all major apps, and I have yet to have a conflict of any kind because of it (since the first 2 days of 10.5's release). Make sure to clean the application font caches and the system font folders (2 of the many handy things it does) once you've added your fonts, restart, and you should be almost there. Next step, activate all of your 'A' fonts and check the conflicts section for duplicate activated fonts. Delete the dup's and you should be all set (after repeating through 'Z'.). I've managed hundred's of clients with more than 10,000 faces each and this is the ONLY app that handles them all consistently and reliably.

MUDFLAPPER I don't think it's the app. Sounds like you have a corrupt font. (Version 1.2.3)

MYSHKIN2 An application shouldn't crash and lock up the whole system because of one corrupt font. i.e. it's a rubbish application (Version 1.2.3)

MUDFLAPPER Actually, fonts are notorious for crashing EVERYTHING. I used to have so many problems with corrupt fonts causing every app that used them to crash. Font Explorer is the most reliable, trouble-free font app for the Mac. Trust me. It's not the app causing the problems. Make sure you have deleted all other font app plugins. Use something like Font Doctor to diagnose and fix/remove corrupt fonts. Clean the all font caches using Font Explorer. Restart. If it was a font causing the problem, the problem will be gone. If it's still there, there is something wrong with your system. (Version 1.2.3)

MYSHKIN2 Actually Suitcase is much better as it tells you whether a font is corrupt and offers to fix it and doesn't just lock up and crash your system. (Version 1.2.3)

MUDFLAPPER FontExplorer does that too, but sometimes, if the font in question is a system font, or a font used by Microsoft Office apps (for example) stuff starts crashing before a font manager gets a chance to warn you. It's a real pain in the ass. I had so many issues with Quark and bad fonts a couple years ago at work. And, of course, it only seemed to happen when there was a nearly-impossible-to-meet deadline. Ugh, bad times. (Version 1.2.3)

ZANGIEF Love it, just love it. One of my gripes with Leopard's Font Book is that when you delete a font before removing it from a collection, its entry stays in the collection if you view it from the font panel and the only way I've found to fix this is removing and re-creating the collection, a major inconvenience. Those of us who collect and use large numbers of fonts (me and some other posters) will find that Font Book just won't cut it. That's when it's time to bring in Linotype, who knows how to do fonts and how people want to do fonts. (Version 1.2.3)

PHATBANK Also had problems with 10.5.2. Still auto-activate problems, and it's causing havoc with System UI Server; several menu extras (keychain, Spaces, Airport) will hang with any interaction until FontExplorer is quit. Love this program; hope it's updated soon. (Version 1.2.2)

FRIBHEY linotype fontexplorer doesn't play nice with 10.5.2, safari hangs and crashes on several sites (daringfireball, pitchforkmedia and even macupdate to name a few). the only way to get these working is to quit fontexplorer. (Version 1.2.2)
