DESCRIPTION
Transmission is a fast, easy, and free multi-platform BitTorrent client.

Transmission sets initial preferences so things "Just Work", while advanced features like watch directories, bad peer blocking, and the web interface can be configured with just a few clicks. Macworld put it this way: "It's fast, it's extremely lightweight, and — even though it's available for a variety of platforms — it behaves just as you'd expect a Mac program to."

Transmission supports full encryption, file selection, a web-based interface, groups, peer exchange, automatic port forwarding, webseeds, watch directories, tracker editing, global and per-torrent speed limits, and more.

Its code is freely available online and is licensed under either the GNU Public License v2 or the MIT License. The development team welcomes anyone who is interested in contributing code, documentation, translations, or other help.

DOMINATOR1001  Hi all, I really like transmission I have been using it on my macs for the past 2 years now, its the simplest and easiest on the eye torrent downloader. The only thing that absolutely bugs me and I would really like to rectify is the fact i now cannot use any version over 1.51 every single one i try to update even making a new file (ala transmission-2 or -3) works for about a few minutes then crashes i tried to write this on the developer site however got nowhere and was wondering if someone here could help, i am using mac OSX 10.5.8 any suggestions would be appreciated!

MISHA  Depending on the # of torrents you're running and their status Transmission can take up to several minutes to Quit in my experience (the dock icon adds a "quitting" label while it's in the process of quitting).

DETTO  I'm glad that the bugs from 2.02 are fixed rather quickly.

Still...as long as the caching feature isn't available in a stable release I'll stick to uTorrent. I don't like its UI, but it just works and is damn fast. Transmission for me feels pretty stubborn as soon as there are more than 3 torrents downloading relatively fast. Again, this is just the problem with the caching. Will keep an eye on Transmission though.

SPRINGHEELMAC  I agree, Transmission DOES rock. However, this doesn't change the fact the 2.02 would not add torrents. I take it you didn't add any torrents with it? It did everything else just fine with previously loaded torrents, it just would not add a new one. It would display something like, "That transfer is ready in progress" or something to that effect, but it would not be.

ROBACKJA  Since 2.00 Transmission for Mac has been a really bad experience for me.

2.02: can't add new torrents.

2.00 - 2.02: has some sort of issue with disk activity. 2.00 virtually was unusable. 2.02 sees some improvement but it still not there. It is less noticeable running on my system drive (Intel SSD), then if I load a torrent up on an external drive.

I sure it will approve and I will continue to use Transmission, but quality control on the Mac has been short as of late.

CHARLES_BT  > 2.02: Can't add new torrents

Yes, this slipped into 2.02 and is fixed now in 2.03. Sorry about that.

> 2.00 - 2.02: has some sort of issue with disk activity

I'm not sure what this is about -- 2.0x doesn't handle disk activity differently than 1.9x did.

For less disk IO, you might try a nightly build from https://build.transmissionbt.com/job/trunk-mac/ -- that has the disk cache feature discussed previously here on MU. It greatly reduces the number of disk writes when downloading and (to a smaller extent) the number of disk reads when uploading.

ROBACKJA  MacUpdate, not really the place to discuss this here.. anyway

> I'm not sure what this is about -- 2.0x doesn't handle disk activity differently than 1.9x did.

When I first upgraded to 2.00 from 1.92, I started a torrent on an external FW400 disk, as I always did in the past. The hard disk light flashed erratically and the Transmission GUI would freeze up. If I paused the torrent, hard disk light settled down and Transmission became responsive again. I only have a 1.5Mbps cable connection, so even if its maxed, the FW400 disk is certainly capable of that throughput.

Maybe it was related to OS X and not Transmission. I sure I did at least one of 10.6.x updates in between, and I don't seem to see similar issues on Linux.

I've tried the nightly before, it seemed to improve things, but I didn't seem to remember Transmission bringing my disk to a halt because of I/O load before, that is what trigged my comment.

And again, I am huge Transmission fan. I use it on my Mac, Linux box, and OpenWrt wireless router. Its open-source and cross-platform. If the problem persists, I'll try and do some more investigative testing before opening a ticket on TRAC.

CHILLIN69X  I'm having issues opening up the information for each torrent. When I click the designated 'i' in the top right corner of the application, the 'i' turns blue, then back to gray. No further box pops up. Any help?
