DESCRIPTION
Rita is a paint program for Mac OS X that attempts to be limitless, flexible and easy to use. Unlike traditional paint programs Rita does not restrict you to a particular image size or resolution. Instead, it uses an infinite canvas. You can make the image as big as you like and zoom in as much as you want without ever encountering any big blocky pixels.

Rita is most fun when using a Wacom drawing board or a similar device.

NIKLAS FRYKHOLM  Since the latest version is a universal binary it requires 10.3.9. It doesn't run on 10.3.1 as previous versions did. I have clarified this in the requirements.

ANONYMOUS  A very great thing ! Thanks. Rita works with pdf's, and is useful to point details for corrections. With a scroll bar (never satisfied !), it'd replace Acrobat for me !!!

ANONYMOUS  This program is what I've been waiting for.

I'm a student at St. John's College who does quite a lot of geometry. I've been on the lookout for a program under $50 that lets me draw diagrams of geometric proofs with ease. This program takes the cake. Its as easy to use as Flash (which I can't afford) but without the extra features (which I can't use).

Great App. Great Price. Nuff' Said.

ANONYMOUS  To Naman: Rita in Swedish translates to Draw in English, which most likely was the desired meaning of the word.

LOU KASH  The most amazing paint program I've seen so far.

Sure, as a graphic designer I use Photoshop/Illustrator a lot, sometimes Painter which came with my Wacom tablet, but their "featuritis" is often too disturbing. In fact, if I wanted to sketch something quickly, I usually prefer to open the built-in Ink window.

There comes Rita. Easy keyboard shortcuts, three floating windows (including the system color palette), one canvas. A compact file format and high quality TIFF export.

Brilliant!

And the license is very honest. It's shareware, but no "crippleware". In such a case I usually pay immediatelly.

What I'd like to see soon in a future version:

- QuickTime formats import with an embed-or-link option

- easy to save custom brushes

What I wouldn't mind to have as well:

- Layer palette

- Tools palette

- basic type functionality (the TextEdit framework)

- vector export

Oh yeah, and best of all, Rita is my wife's first name. :)

NCIANCA  I can confirm that 1.0.1 does indeed launch now.

This is a good start for a freehand drawing program. All of the actions are controlled by the menu, which is awkward when using with a tablet (I prefer to be able to select the tools using the pen rather then a combination of keyboard/pen since the tablet is usually in front of my keyboard.) So, It definitely needs a tool palette. The lack of a tool palette makes it harder to use Rita.

However, I do like the fact that you can use a single key to use a tool, e.g. P is Pen, A is Arrow, rather then having to use a cmd-key to activate the tool.

I also like that the canvas has no preset size.

It would also be nice to be able to define colors for the "Quick Color Menu".

When pasting a copied selection, it should place it in the middle of the new document window. Speaking of new document windows, they should be larger (or at least one should be able to set the default size).

The steps to zoom in and out are too large. In some cases the picture is either too big or too small.

I also don't understand why there is a 0 pen size setting in the brush picker.

You can't paste other graphics into Rita or can you paste the contents of Rita's pasteboard into other apps!

It should also support more export formats (or just add them to the regular save box in the menu). Right now it only support tiff, but it would be handy to have jpeg, png and gif. I do like that only the visible part of the drawing is exported.

I didn't experience a single crash or odd behaviour while using Rita.

Overall a great start. I'd like to see how this application evolves, in particular with some of the UI and file/clipboard formats.

NCIANCA  Application is improperly linked (referencing the author's hard drive for some frameworks) so it won't launch.
