DESCRIPTION
Celtx is a comprehensive software package designed for people who work in the Film, TV, Theatre, and New Media industries. It combines full-feature scriptwriting with media rich pre-production support and enables online collaboration.

Features include:

  • Write, import, edit and publish scripts using standard industry formatting
  • Manage pre-production tasks like location and talent scouting
  • Perform production breakdowns by adding media (sound files, video clips and digital pictures)
  • Collaborate with team members over the Internet

Until Celtx, script writers were subjected to bloated and bug ridden software and the pre-production team had been ignored altogether. With Celtx, script writers enjoy using a clean and stable application that includes all the features they need to write. The pre-production team, for the first time, can now perform their production breakdown using software designed for that purpose. In addition to providing media rich tools to annotate the script, Celtx enables a project to be collaboratively shared with others.

Prior to Celtx, projects were completed using slip-sheeted, paper-based scripts maintained in bulky three ring binders that included hundreds, sometimes thousands, of attached pictures and hand written notes. Project information could only be shared in paper form.

Scripts written or imported into Celtx can be broken down digitally and, for the first time, easily shared with others to foster collaboration and creativity during the pre-production and production phases of film and TV making.

APPSCOUT  I actually like this app. A lot.

I'm sorry that my last entry — a trifling bit of absurdity — upset so many. Wow! You really, really hated my script! LOL

FWIW, I was mocking myself — for having invested so much money on FD. An app BTW, that started life as a Mac app, and has now fully become a ported Windows app — for the Mac.

This is not like so many crappily ported Windows apps. You likely know which ones I mean. It is truly a cross-platform app. Designed cross-platform. Which is okay, because it works well. And it looks good.

I was mistaken to think that my original intent would be obvious. My bad.

KUBLAKHAN  My tip to all my fellow screenwriters. Don't waste your money on Final Draft or other such programs! This program will do the same and more!

Spread the word... a free alternative to Final Draft.

JAKEFACE  I have downloaded many programs from this website and have never left a comment/review. I felt the need to say a little something about this program. It is absolutely amazing, and free! I can't believe it's free, honestly. It does everything, programs like final draft do, and more. Those programs are hundreds of dollars! Like I said, amazing. Thank you so much to the developers. Cheers!

GREG RAVEN  After using an IBM Selectric II for many years to write screenplays, I thought MS Word 3.0 was a tremendous step up. Then I switched to FrameMaker, but Adobe stopped Mac development. That dumped me back into Word, but the newer versions are weird for screenplays, despite the power of the program. I've tried other screenplay-centric programs, but Celtx has been my favorite for the last few versions. I've converted each of my old and current screenplay projects into Celtx, and I'm almost completely happy. About the only thing I'd change about the program is the way it handles (V.O.) next to the character name. First, it capitalizes it, which is not the Universal Studios format I learned many years ago. Second, when it builds lists of names from your screenplay, you will see (for example) CARL and CARL (V.O.) as separate entries. I can kinda see how some might find this a feature, but it bugs me. Still, this is a tremendous program, and it is free, AND you can sign up to share and discuss your projects on the Celtx website, which could be really nice if you're collaborating with others. By the way, the HTML files Celtx generates are very clean, code-wise, so posting your work on-line doesn't involve 30 minutes of code munging as with MS Word.

ANAME  Love it!

I would disagree to the sceptic comment down below. For irrational and absent-minded, non-snobbish commoners like me, this program really seals the deal! I couldn't live without it, since it sorts all your ideas and stuff nice and easy in one convenient and streamlined facility for production planning. And the collaborative part of it is awesome.

Go go go, Celtx!

PS. Georgesimian, what specifically are you missing? Why not share your knowledge and state the items that you think are missing out? Clearly, this is a very generous application, especially while being free. And it certainly deserves some push of knowledge from people in the know. To a certain degree, I believe this app is an effort, very much derived from lots of user feedback.

DKI  As someone who put up with FD because it was the best (of the worst) of the screenwriting programs, I say a big ol' THANK YOU to the Celtx developers. The program looks awesome, feels awesome and works amazingly well. If you are using FD and just hate looking at it and watching formatting problems reoccur, download this immediately. It looks simple but definitely is not. It handles anything I can throw at it, and I'm doing some pretty weird formatting things.

The learning curve is nil. I'm SOOOOOO glad I made the switch.

The collab feature is great, it's rock solid, and the newest version just adds more and more great features that the users are requesting. Bravo. Open source at it's absolute best.

THUS.SPAKE.Z  Celtx is an absolutely beautiful gem of a screenwriting app, at least as good as any of the others out there costing many drachmas.

Unbelievable that Celtx is free of charge. It doesn't get much better than this.

Kudos and accolades to its developers.
