DESCRIPTION

TextExpander (formerly Textpander) is a customizable typing shortcut tool that saves time and keystrokes. With TextExpander, you can define abbreviations for frequently-used text strings and images, also known as snippets. When an abbreviation is typed, it expands automatically to the full snippet.

Here are a few examples for what you can do with TextExpander:

  • Insert standard greetings, phrases, boilerplate paragraphs, and signatures - including formatted text and pictures.
  • Correct typos automatically
  • Organize snippets into groups
  • Add predefined snippet groups, including HTML, CSS, Autocorrect, Accented Words, and Symbols groups.
  • Shorten long URLs automatically with the Internet Productivity snippet group
  • Insert the current date and time in any format you prefer.
  • Sync snippets via MobileMe

TextExpander is controlled from its own preference pane inside your System Preferences. Designed for easy handling, TextExpander blends in perfectly with your operating system.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 2.8:
  • Use rich text snippets in web apps (for example, signatures in Gmail)
  • Revised purchase reminder alert
  • Make a selection using %\ in conjunction with %| cursor positioning
  • Other minor fixes and improvements
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

PAT320  After using textexpander during 2 years (with OS 10.4.11), after stranges behavior of TE, after having headhaches, after loosing lot of snippets, after create and recreate and rerecreate several time the same snippets, after trying all my best to organise myself & folders into a tiny preference pane window, after waiting and hoping none coming bug fixed updates: I'm proud to use TYPINATOR now.

D00D  *sigh* Upated with MacUpdate Desktop today and lost all my settings and snippets. Don't know if to blame the update or the updater.

DP8  MacUpdate Desktop will only run the installer - it will not delete files. We will contact the developer to ask them about the installer and support files.

CERNIUK  Love this utility, a definite must have but... not cozy with chilly kitty yet...

Under Snow Leopard the background application that watches keystrokes seems to unregister itself and TE stops working. Have to go and **double click** on one of the menu items to insert an expansion before the background application starts back up. What's up with double clicking a menu item anyway?!

CERNIUK  so far, it is purring along. The "occasional" was pretty much 50% of the time for me. Found out how much I used TextExpander. Thanks!

VISKWAL  Beware with this update.

I installed it this morning, and all of my snippets have vanished.

I'm still waiting for a reply from smileonmymac, but no update should ever loose any data.

ERIC DURBROW  I wonder if Snow Leopard will make many of these functions redundant. If I recall from an early screenshot, the next OS will have text expansion built in.

WALRUSCP  Memory and performance continue to improve, but still more of a memory hog than Typinator. After a while TE shoots up to 186 MB RAM used (I have 2705 snippets) whereas Typinator consistently stays around 20 MB RAM used with the same number of snippets. It could be a memory leak, since TE generally starts and stays around 40 MB or so. Usually find it shoots up after a day or two.

CLAKES  - Can't set HotKeys

- Not able to duplicate items

- Troubles sorting and organizing snippets into groups

-> Typinator (also a little cheaper)...

Sorry.

M57  I was a longtime user of TypeIt4Me, the first Mac app that did this sort of thing. TypeIt4Me is really the granddaddy of these sorts of apps, but unfortunately, like a grandaddy it has sort of gotten a little slow and outdated. I switched to TextExpander because of expansion issues with TypeIt4Me, issues that I brought to the developers attention and he could not fix. Basically it couldn't keep up with me when I was typing fast and would expand words in the wrong place. I have only used TextExpander for a week, but I have not once had the same issue. Also, I have found the user interface more intuitive. TypeIt4Me is still a great product, so it is worth checking out if you are in the market for this kind of utility, but for now I have happily made the switch and would recommend TextExpander.

MMUECK  I completely agree with you that TypeIt4Me is both a text expander and a highly infuriating text mangler. I've long been tempted by TextExpander and over the past 18 months to 2 years have repeatedly passed along my feedback and specifically requested that the developers implement two key TypeIt4Me features (both fairly easy to do) . However, I have found them to be quite unresponsive, and of course the features weren't implemented...

WALRUSCP  Really like this app, and I use it daily.

I have had this problem though: I will use a snippet in one form field. Works fine. But then I will try and paste some text in another field right afterward and it will end up pasting the snippet I just used instead of the text I had in the clipboard. I then have to delete the text and then try pasting again, which works the second time.

Other than this bug, this is a terrific app!

WALRUSCP  "In the prefernces pane, select restore clipboard. That may solve your problem."

I already have this option selected, but I still have the problem. I think the issue is that I am trying to paste to quickly before TextExpander has a chance to restore the clipboard.
