DESCRIPTION

SteerMouse is an advanced driver for USB and Bluetooth mice. It also supports Apple Mighty Mouse very well.

SteerMouse can assign various functions to buttons that Apple's software does not allow, including double-clicks, modifier clicks, application switching, assignment of shortcut keys, "snap to" cursor movement, which moves the cursor to target (such as an OK button), and more.

SteerMouse lets you control the cursor's Sensitivity on top of the Tracking Speed. (Apple's software only allows adjustment for the Tracking Speed.) By adjusting both configurations, you can customize the ideal setting for the cursor to fit the movements of your hand.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 3.9:
  • Problem solved where the cursor speed would not be configured correctly when switching user accounts by using the fast user switching.
  • Added F17-F19 to the 'Input Shortcut Key' function (Mac OS X 10.5 or later).
  • Problem solved where the modifier keys that are assigned to buttons would not work with the screen zoom.
  • Problem solved where the 'Select from Running Applications' button in the Application Register Window would not work.
  • Problems solved where buttons of certain mice were not recognized.
  • Various other fixes and improvements.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later.

RANSKY  I've used SteerMouse for about a year with a Logitech MX revolution wireless mouse. A program I was using didn't behave right with the Logitech drivers and SteerMouse was the fix. SteerMouse is a great program...does what it's supposed to do, in the background, and doesn't conflict with anything else on my system.

KRZYSPMAC  I used SteerMouse as a replacement for the crappy logitech driver for my trackball. It works great and doesn't hang my system. It's a keeper :)

CHIEFTED  Still trying to get this to work with some of the buttons on my Logitech V470.

Most of the functionality does work but when assigning F keys to the middle button

it seems buggy (Expose in particular, when hiding all the windows to get to the desktop

the windows will stay hidden vice with Logitech's control center when I press the middle

button a second time it will reveal the windows).

Will still keep plugging away with this but for now I think this is average

MEDIAHOUND  This is a great mouse driver, much better than USB Overdrive! I'm using it under Leopard to drive my Logitech G5 mouse and it works fantastically. I can assign any button do do anything I want and I have full control over the cursor speed and sensitivity as well as scrolling speed.

I only had to wait about 20 minutes for my serial number email after I sent payment so I was pleasantly surprised after hearing some complaints of a week long wait.

SCHMIEGEL  This is by far the best mouse-driver for the Mac. I use it with MacAlly DotMouse and compared to the MacAlly Input Manager and USB-Overdrive this one allows fast AND accurate scrolling and cursor movement. The accelerated scrolling is very smooth.

MACD  Prepare to wait for your serial for ages!

The software is nice, but it would be even nicer if I you didn't have to wait for hours. Author doesn't have automatic serial number generation system in place. WTF? Are we still in 1990ths?? And there's a nice message which reads on thankyouverymuch for purchase - "Please contact us if you haven't received your serial in a week after payment. A WEEK?? Oh come on! Every single sharewave program I have bought in last several years had automatic serial numbers generation system (ie you get your number in seconds after you click the "charge my credit card" button). Plentycom doesn't bother spending a few hours setting up such a system (and yes, it's NOT hard to setup, at all - I've been doing it myself several years ago when I was in shareware business)

Still.. waiting.. for... serial..

DRDUL  I've started using SteerMouse because the Intellipoint software for my MS mouse is too buggy to tolerate any more. SteerMouse does the job nicely, but one thing is confusing me as I tweak the settings -- the difference between "tracking speed" and "sensitivity." Unfortunately, there's no useful explanation of these within the app or on the developer's web site. I'm trying to find a balance between precision for small movements of the mouse and fast speed for when I need to move the cursor a long distance. If anyone could provide some insight as to how these settings work, it would be appreciated!

DRDUL  To follow up on my earlier post, I contacted the developer who couldn't provide any more insight. After fiddling with it for a while, it appears that "tracking speed" determines how fast/much the cursor moves across the screen, while "sensitivity" determines how much the cursor moves in relation to the movement of the mouse.

I have set my tracking speed to the higher end of the range (1.5), and my sensitivity to the lower end (600). The result is that I can move the cursor from one side of my large monitor to the other without much mouse movement (higher tracking speed), yet I can still use the mouse accurately when doing detail work in Photoshop (lower sensitivity).

KLAGRECA  Wouldn't be great if Steermouse could store your preferences in .Mac? Then, it would serve as a "backup" when/if you wipe out your machine, or if just wanted to use your preferences on another computer (that also has Steermouse).

..just an idea.. anyone agree?

DTRUETT1  It would be nice to even know where they are stored. I tried moving both the .plist and the pref file to my work computer and got zilch

Excellent.

It's ridiculous to have to pay another $20 to get your Logitech mouse to work reasonably, but Logitech Control Center is a bug ridden unstable piece of junk.

Steermouse does the job of customizing various mice very nicely.

FARIBORZ  I bought this program minutes after I first tried it. I use a Wireless Mighty Mouse and couldn't use its extra buttons for navigation purposes. Now with SteerMouse I can finally program the "Back" and "Forward" functions without ever going to the menus of my browser. I've been told that SteerMouse has a high level of compatibility with many other mice in the market although I haven't personally tested this claim. As far as my Wireless Mighty Mouse is concerned, now it has a reliable assistance that will surely accompany it for many years to come. Fariborz AMIRSHAHI - Verona (Italy)
