DESCRIPTION
Stellarium is an open source desktop planetarium. It renders the skies in realtime using OpenGL, which means the skies will look exactly like what you see with your eyes, binoculars, or a small telescope. Stellarium is very simple to use, which is one of its biggest advantages: it can easily be used by beginners.

JAZZYGUY  Just a tip,I just tried SkyOrb and it is far better than this app GUIwise as well as stability. There is also a PPC version. For those who don't want to install MacPorts and get Kstars SkyOrb is a free app and extremely attractive as well as useful.

JAZZYGUY  Why don't I like this application? There are so many reasons.First of all the Developers are well intended and have devoted their time and effort and for that they deserve credit. But this is a very difficult app to use. I guess I am spoiled and have installed MacPorts and then used it to download and install Kstars which is an outstanding app and easy to use.I addition its GUI is far nicer and easier to use. This app is a toy while Kstars is the real deal. There are so many things wrong with the GUI and it has so many bugs that it is impossible to delineate them all. The default location doesn't get saved. Not for me anyway. The toolbar is so convuluted that it is impossible for a "newbie" to figure it out.I guees I am down on it and its brother Celestia because I am spoiled by Kstars.

JAZZYGUY  Tice: To get Kstars which is a really classy app and is free you have to install MacPorts which is free. The site is available here on MacUpdate. It will guide you through the installation in Terminal.Make sure you install from your install disk SDK and Developer Tools First. Then install MacPorts.then on the MacPorts site there is a multitude of free apps nut KStars is one of the classiest and leaves this one in the dust. The reason it is not listed here in other suggestions is that it is installed by MacPorts. You will also need X11.app to display Kstars. It is well worth the effort and will lead you to a new vista (pardon the expression)of Mac entertainment and useful applications.

DOCJK  Stellarium 0.10.4 on MacBook Pro1,2 2,16 Intel Core duo 2GB Ram, 10.6.2

Wow, I am impressed and that does not come easy!

Starts quickly, all functions work swiftly and without "hesitation", very nice animation, especially the planet magnification and animated orbits. Like to hunt for the "cruising satellites" with my binoculars. Very very fast as far as I can tell... I love the menu look :-) Huge language support, many interesting and useful preferences. Although I couldn't get the compass bearing plug-in to work, not sure if it´s me ;-)

For my needs as a non professional sky-observer in Northern Norway a great application. Can´t believe it´s free... Does really meet the famous "Mac spirit".

I might miss one additional useful function: Northern Lights indicator plug-in!?

Big thanks to the people behind the project! Definitely 5 stars!

DOUG ENGELBART  Stellarium 0.10.2 on my OSX.5.8 (G4) only shows a window full of graphic trash for 10 seconds, then it quits itself. I went back to v0.9.1 which runs fine.

SEBEHK  I think the dev team finally nailed it. A lot of the video glitches and slowness issues are now gone. I have been reverting back to version 0.9.1 every time because of the glitches and slowness. Version 0.10.2 is definitely a significant improvement.

JAZZYGUY  The default for viewing is set for Paris,France. It is virtually impossible to set it for your home location as the window with all the Geographical Settings will not scroll down properly . If your city is at the end (or middle) of the alphabet unless you have the balance of the day to attempt maneuvering to it yoou are out of luck. Consequently mine is set to view the sky under Paris skies.

JAZZYGUY  Very different version of Stellarium. On my G5 with 6GB of Ram and a Radeon 9600 Graphics card it brings up some strange stuff before it settles down. I am not sure I like this GUI as it is more than a little confusing. For exampleI used the search box to search for Saturn and what I got was the horizon and nothing of Saturn that I could find I zoomed in and out with my mouse but found nothing of Saturn.I am loath to rate it at this point as I am not familiar with it as the previous versions.
