DESCRIPTION
Stellarium is an open source desktop planetarium. It renders the skies in realtime using OpenGL, which means the skies will look exactly like what you see with your eyes, binoculars, or a small telescope. Stellarium is very simple to use, which is one of its biggest advantages: it can easily be used by beginners.

SEBEHK  I think the dev team finally nailed it. A lot of the video glitches and slowness issues are now gone. I have been reverting back to version 0.9.1 every time because of the glitches and slowness. Version 0.10.2 is definitely a significant improvement.

JAZZYGUY  The default for viewing is set for Paris,France. It is virtually impossible to set it for your home location as the window with all the Geographical Settings will not scroll down properly . If your city is at the end (or middle) of the alphabet unless you have the balance of the day to attempt maneuvering to it yoou are out of luck. Consequently mine is set to view the sky under Paris skies.

JAZZYGUY  Very different version of Stellarium. On my G5 with 6GB of Ram and a Radeon 9600 Graphics card it brings up some strange stuff before it settles down. I am not sure I like this GUI as it is more than a little confusing. For exampleI used the search box to search for Saturn and what I got was the horizon and nothing of Saturn that I could find I zoomed in and out with my mouse but found nothing of Saturn.I am loath to rate it at this point as I am not familiar with it as the previous versions.

A. BUSBEY  I loved the previous version, but I can't get the configuration tools to work in this new one. I click on them and they 'light up' and no window opens. So am also back to using an older verison.

GURPLE  Crashes due to missing image /usr/local/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib and probably others down the chain once that one is available.

SANS DIEU RIEN  Astronomical! It's free! I finally pulled myself away from the program. It's just plain fun tinkering with Stellarium: you can customize even the sky view by downloading your own panoramic pictures! As an added bonus, there are various cultural constellations such as the Inuits and Koreans.

The interface can be a bit awkward (press m + arrow buttons to modify more features, etc.). But once you save your locale and other information, just sit back and explore. I can hardly wait to submit my own panoramic view from my rooftop. I hope in a future update there will be more historical facts regarding celestial bodies.

Stellarium's forums are loaded with helpful tips where you can upload other views, etc.

It's worth checking out, even if you're slightly curious about astronomy.
