DESCRIPTION
OmniGraphSketcher (formerly Graph Sketcher) helps you make elegant and precise graphs in seconds, simply by sketching what you want. Specifically designed for reports, presentations, and problem sets where you need to produce sharp-looking graphs on the fly, OmniGraphSketcher combines the data plotting power of charting applications with the ease of a basic drawing program. Add as many lines as you like to represent goals, cutoffs, or other boundaries. Shade in areas, connect and align objects, and add labels anywhere on the graph as you go. Enter data visually with a click of the mouse, and if your data is already in a spreadsheet or database program, just copy and paste it right into OmniGraphSketcher. OmniGraphSketcher has an intuitive and simple interface so that you can quickly find what you want, while behind-the-scenes algorithms take care of all the details. It's an ideal solution for anyone who needs to make plots and graphs without the hassle of using a complicated data visualization program.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.1 beta 1:
- New Features
- Support for LinkBack now makes it a lot easier to use other applications to extend the functionality of OmniGraphSketcher. When you choose "Copy As Image" and paste into a LinkBack-compliant application (such as OmniGraffle and OmniOutliner), you can now go back later to edit the graph simply by double-clicking the image. OmniGraphSketcher will open the graph and save any changes back to the containing document.
- Error Bars: Creating error bars to visualize uncertainty in the data used to be tricky and a bit tedious. A new Make Error Bars menu item can convert existing parallel data series into error bars, or it can create error bars with positive and negative offsets that you specify. See the Help documentation for more examples and information.
- Tracing: Need to make a nicer version of an existing graph image? You can now make the OmniGraphSketcher window transparent in order to draw directly on top of the source. (You'll find this option in the Canvas Inspector.)
- You can now create a copy of any set of graph objects by holding down Option as you drag. You can also choose Edit -> Duplicate.
- You can now drag axis titles anywhere along the axis. They will automatically snap to the centered position.
- You can now use Tab or Shift-Tab to jump to the next or previous text label anywhere on the graph. This makes it particularly easy to batch-edit the axis tick labels.
- New option to export graphs in EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) format.
- New, printable Keyboard Shortcuts page (you'll find it in the Help menu).
- Improved Functionality
- Improved the auto-scaling behavior when importing data so that it is more likely your axis ranges will automatically be what you expect. This should reduce the need to choose Scale To Fit Data as a manual step.
- Automatic point snapping now works consistently across the Modify, Draw, and Fill tools. It also now supports the situation where you want a line or fill edge to be simultaneously vertical (or horizontal) and snapped to another line (such as a data series). You can just move the point near the location where you want it to snap, or hold down the Shift key to force a horizontal or vertical constraint as part of the snap.
- When you drag to make a rectangular selection in Modify mode, you will now select all graph objects that overlap the selection rectangle. Hold down the Option key to only select objects fully contained in the rectangle.
- You can now drag axis ends (or any axis tick label) to scale the axis while the opposite end stays fixed.
- When dragging the bottom-right window corner to resize the canvas, it will now snap to a square grid -- i.e. make the grid spacing the same on both axes.
- Whether you're drawing lines, making fills, or editing text, you can now hit Return to confirm edits in progress, or hit Esc to cancel them.
- Now when you select a line and one or more free-floating points, then click one of the line type buttons on the inspector, the points will be added to the line. This is a useful shortcut for adding new points to data series as you get the data.
- Software Update can now ignore specific updates, and it supports secure and validated software update feeds.
- Visual Changes
- Axes are now 1 pixel thick by default so as to make the contents of your graphs more prominent by comparison. (Like all other styles, this setting can be changed using "Make Current Styles Default".) Thin axes also now look better on-screen and in exported bitmap formats.
- Line equations are now shortened when possible (for example, "y = 3x + 0" becomes "y = 3x").
- The default color for the fifth imported data series is now a slightly lighter purple.
- The selection highlight now becomes gray on windows that do not have key focus.
- Bug Fixes
- Fixed some intermittent issues with text editing.
- Data importing can now handle all combinations of parentheses and currency symbols around a number.
- QuickLook generator is now compatible with Snow Leopard Wiki Server as a standalone plugin.
- Smaller fixes and improvements.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.5 or later.

PABLITO I bought it two weeks ago. No regrets. Works smooth, even being a beta. I work with sheets with more than 2k lines, and the plot here happens. Faster and more beautiful than using Numbers. I am excited about the software evolution. I hope it keeps the track. I recommend it. (Version 1.0b3)

PABLITO I am wondering to buy this software, but 30 bucks! sounds expensive, once OmniGraffle is a more complete software, even iWork with all the features. Well, let's see. Omni do a good job always. To me is one of the best software-houses, and this software shows potential. But it is expensive at moment. (Version 1.0b1)

MSWFUJOWDFFYC I demo'd graph sketcher about a month ago and absolutely and was so impresssed that I ended up purchasing it within the hour. Yesterday I received a free upgrade for OmniGraphSketcher, and although it's very similiar to GraphSketcher, the upgrades are mostly tweaks that enable quicker graphing by way of shorter-shortcuts. I use this software while taking in-class econ notes, meaning this software is fast and user friendly enough where I can create graphs as quick as the teacher can put them on the blackboard. I can't even tell you how much easier it is to comprehend these graphs as opposed to the dozens of pencil-drawn messes in my spiral notebook when reviewing! (Version 1.0b1)

PABLITO Thanks for the reply. I am really encouraged to test - I will do it this weekend. Omnigroup is very gentle and attentive. This software looks great, but unfortunately, as I said, a little bit expensive to me. I hope it keeps evolving and more integrated with iWork (specifically Numbers). (Version 1.0b1)

MAHER Finally I found why this version is crashing when launched. The problem is an incompatibility with Default Folder. I just add it to the excluded application in Default Folder and everything is working perfectly. May be the developer could check why it's incompatible with Default Folder (Version 1.5.2)

MAHER I love this little app, but since I installed the last version, it launchs but quit immediately. I sent an email to the developer. The version before is still working properly. (Version 1.5.2)

COOLMEMIN I absolutely love this fantastic little program. I am a Math instructor and it is incredibly easy to make graphs for lectures and exams in literally seconds, and they look great to boot! With an educational license the price is a steal too! (Version 1.5.1)

MACINTOSH SAUCE I love this program, because I find it so incredibly useful and very simple to use. Since I am studying to become a Social Science teacher, this program has helped me with a major assignment in one of my Foundations of Teaching courses. I always pay for Shareware programs that make my life easier, and this program is going to do that for me when I get my first secondary Social Science (Economics, Geography, History) classroom. MRFIZX I've used this with my regular-level high school physics students with no problems for the past year or so. They can use the program without much instruction from me, which goes to show how simple the program is to use (they couldn't use Excel to save their grades, let alone lives!). I can read their data, they get their labs done more quickly and accurately, and it's all done with a minimum of effort on everyone's part. And until the graphing features of Pages/Keynote match Graph Sketcher's ease and control, this will be my graphing program of choice. (Version 1.0)

ARVIDTP awesome! as a geologist and electronic musician who often finds that standard graphing software makes it difficult to represent simple but specific things, this is great! For simple displays to demonstrate concenpts in geology, or to do approximate frequency/musical activity or stereo-image graphs for studio techniques classÂ… Great for graphing subjective things where the visual is more important than the numbers! I just would like some way of making a curve - bezier?, or some other method? rather than just line segments. But otherwise excellent. Interface is clean and easy easy to learn. (Version 1.0b4)

ROBINSTEWART As of version 1.4.5, Graph Sketcher now supports curves. They are similar to the bezier paths found in many illustration programs, but with a more intuitive interface. (Version 1.4.7)

153957PHOTOGRAPHY eeer, well in your startupdisk/Applications/Utilities you will find Grapher! its free, and does many graphs. "Oh, right. For now at least, Graph Sketcher is not a function graphing program (try Grapher in Mac OS X Tiger)." well, in Grapher you can also just input coordinates ("New Point Set") which it will draw, (also the option to create a trend/formula best fitted to those cordinates.) and Grapher does 3D graphs. I guess that if you want basic graphs, take this. (Grapher is more useful, IMHO, ... if you know how to use it) (Version 1.0b4)
