ANONYMOUS  Seems to pickup the last place you connected to the net through dial up! im now conected to wireless in london but it gives my old home town as a location. It's not the app's fault obviously but anyone know why this is happening just out of interest?

oh, and is it possible to look up www.apple.com (for example) rather than an ip number to get a location?

ANDREW HEDGES  IP Locator uses WhatsMyIP.com to determine your machine's current IP address. Strange that it's not recognizing when you change networks!

YES! You can now (as of version 1.2) lookup hostnames (and domain names), not just IP addresses. The example on the new screenshot shows www.google.com as being in Mountain View, CA, USA.

Maybe I need to change the name? Any suggestions?

ANONYMOUS  Awesome little widget, nice thing to satisfy curiosity... NetBarrier does the same thing, so it is no way malicious. My only complaint is that it doesnt always pinpoint your actual location, but i guess that cant be avoided (and isnt the developer's fault)

PJN  Very nice widget, I use it also to search who are the visitors from my website.

If I find out that there are many visitors from a certain country, then I can ajust the website more to there needs.

ANDREW HEDGES  IP Locator uses whatismyip.com to fetch the user's current IP address. They occasionally change the format of their page, breaking this functionality. I have rewritten the screen scraping routine so it should survive any future changes. Thanks for downloading IP Locator!

KAELIN  Nice program, however, it would be better to make the widget a bit bigger as the font size is a little hard on the eyes.

ANDREW HEDGES  There is nothing malevolent about IP Locator or DNSStuff.com, nor do I think the other user's comment meant to imply that there is.

IP Locator simply takes an IP address (yours, by default) and looks up its parts in a database and returns the geographic location, if known.

I believe DNSStuff.com uses a commercial database of geolocation information which -- it's possible -- may have been built (at least partially) in the manner described by the previous poster. However, there is nothing in this widget that returns any information about users (beyond an IP address) to me, DNSStuff.com, or anyone else for that matter.

I applaud the efforts of our friends at hostip.info to create a free database of geolocation information, based on voluntary contributions. Right now, I believe the database used by DNSStuff.com is slightly more accurate.

In any case, thanks for taking the time to look at IP Locator. Watch for some great new features in a future release including resolution of hostnames and mapping of locations!

UH OH, "ANONYMOUS"  I don't foresee a personal need for this software right now, but I understand being upset if you believe such software is designed to work in a way which seems to circumvent built-in, "free" technologies that do not skim personal information about the user.

Hey... they might even delete this Comment! :P lol

I went to the website, the description I saw does not appear to cull any more information than the user would give away simply by being on the internet... but if it IS designed in such a [previously stated] malevolent manner I'd avoid it at all costs...

ANONYMOUS  Interesting to know what geolocator is actually based on:

When you submit a form on the web for personal info the combination of your zip code (or equivalent) and IP address are sold onto companies to tie IPs to physical locations and that is how the database is built up.

IAN WEIR  Not to be confrontational, but you are pretty much entirely wrong.

Some information about an IP can be found by doing a whois lookup. Which, as somebody else pointed out, can be done using the terminal.

Databases such as this, however, are something different all together.

Quote from http://ip-to-country.webhosting.info/node/view/9

"Also, it should be noted that the IP-to-Country Database seeks to indicate the country where resources were first allocated or assigned"

All it really does is find out what country/area the ip address was assigned to.

Nothing illegal about that, nor is any data gathered from companies selling personal data.
