DESCRIPTION
Tiger Tamer is yet another hidden preference setter with a few unique features. No frills, just a bunch of handy tweaks in one place. Among the run of standard settings, Tamer will let you disable the Dashboard and the Spotlight interface and server, and edit the spotlight search rules. All told there are over 80 settings to play with, about a dozen of which may be useful and a few of which are hazardous. As noted by our intrepid reviewers, this program can break your computer and there is no tech support. This program generally edits preferences files to unable buggy features in Apple software, which is fun but a bad idea. So let me agree with the reviewers, and recommend against this software unless you know what you are doing. Try Clix for a good way to start learning, or another preference setter for safer features. And read the help by clicking the pink question mark and mousing over items.
WHAT'S NEW
  • Control screen capture settings in the Spotlight (SystemUIServer) tab.
  • Control guest access in personal file sharing.
  • Log distributed notifications.
  • A few other new settings.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.3 or later.

SONICDEVIANT  Forget all the negative reviews listed below. These folks either have unstable systems or, more likely, they don't know what they're doing.

Yes, you can hurt your system, so if you're clueless about the underpinnings of the Dock and Spotlight (and other settings this utility affects), use the app at your own peril. Treat it like a simplified Terminal shell...you can do MORE damage in the Terminal than with this app if you're unedu-mac-ated.

M2ATMAC  this is a very nice tool. tiger tamer gave me the ability to easily change some hidden tiger settings which were responsible for low system performance.

however, if you are one of those who doesn't care about reading documentation simply do not run this app.

although you'll find some useful information hitting the pink question mark button, some settings are not well documented. nothing you can't find more about googling it.

all in all, this is a two thumbs up app for experienced users. thanks a lot for the time and effort that the developer has put on this tool.

MIKEKIRBY  This hammer sucks. I brought it home and started hitting things with it, and it wrecked my house!

Folks: software is a TOOL. You have to know how to use it or you're just going to break things... that's not the software's fault, it's yours.

This is not a program for newbies. Yes, it will happily allow you to hose your system if you're not careful. That's because it works very well. So if you don't know exactly how to use it, DON'T.

On the other hand, if you've been looking for access to the system options that it offers, and have the understanding to use it properly and with caution, you'll probably find, as I did, that it works exactly as advertised. I found it very handy. Nice freeware.

BRANDON  At first glance, I thought Tiger Tamer would be pretty useless to me. After fooling around with some of the settings, I found it to be exactly the opposite!

Wow, Spotlight is finally usable for me! Speed is greatly increased, I was really disappointed before.

RONALD PRICE  Tiger Tamer hasn't caused any problems here. The options I tried all seem to work as advertised.

LEO OF BORG  Funny. None of what the other reviewers wrote has happened to my machines.

Unlike some other -free- apps, this one does what it says -- and is the perfect thing if you happen to be running a Tiger Server [who needs Spotlight and Dashboard running on a -Server-]??

All this guy goes is set flags and kill services. Example; if your SystemUI Server doesn't start right back up [and your MenuExtras, that Apple does not support] don't either, then you need to look to other problems on your machines.

I have tried -other- AS Studio type apps that have done far worse to my machines than this one [like NOT setting the right permissions on the /etc/hosts file].

ANONYMOUS  Just to counter all the negative criticism below, I have found this program to be stable and good at what it does. I have used it to disable all animations and dashboard on my G3 PowerBook.

I suggest those people who are having problems with this program had their system in an unstable state before using it.

~FLIPPER  I installed this little app, for one reason: the 'Cut' feature. It moves the 'cut' item to trash, sends the item to the Clipboard, but the tiger OS, even though it will show the item on the Clipboard, won't enable 'paste'... what a shame. (Tiger 10.4.2) Otherwise, it's a nice deal. Apple should have had the "cut" feature many years ago....

ANONYMOUS  I have to assume your drive, if it really crashed, was going down anyway. There is nothing done by Tamer that could affect a hard drive, except maybe causing excessive logging.
