DESCRIPTION

Name Mangler... If you need to rename several files at once, this is the application you have always been looking for. Name Mangler is a batch file renamer that supports the following renaming tasks: Find and Replace (including support for regular expressions); Number Sequentially; Change Case; Set Extension; Add Prefix/Suffix; Remove/Insert Characters.

Moreover, you can combine all of these using the Advanced renaming mode, which even comes with some extra features, such as conditional statements, nested counters, and more.

But Name Mangler is more than just one versatile renaming utility — it's an infinite number of task-specific renaming utilities: Name Mangler's Droplets make it ridiculously easy to store configurations and use those repeatedly for different, alternating purposes. Just drop your files on them.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 2.0:
  • [new] files can now be listed in a less detailed way (cf. "General" preferences), allowing you to survey a larger number of files at once
  • [new] you can now have File List ignore " ", "-", "_", and "0" characters when determining the common prefix (cf. "Processing" preferences)
  • [new] by default, image files are now represented by previews instead of generic icons (cf. "General" preferences)
  • [improved] streamlined the user interface and turned this into a universal binary
  • [fixed] Path Finder support on Mac OS X 10.5
  • [fixed] sorting by path

Version 1.2:
  • You can now have the list of files update instead of being cleared after processing files. (Uncheck the "Clear list after processing files" checkbox in File List's "Processing" preferences.)
  • You can now configure File List to quit after processing files successfully. (Check the corresponding checkbox in File List's "Processing" preferences.)
  • New function for File List's Advanced Renaming: [truncate] returns a constant with (source expression) truncated to (maximum length) characters if (source expression) is longer than (maximum length). Returns the orginal (source expression) otherwise.
  • New function for File List's Advanced Renaming: [pad] returns a constant formed from (source expression) by either removing characters from the end, or by appending as many occurrences of (padding expression) as necessary.
  • File List no longer allows making files invisible by specifying a name that starts with a "." character. (Please contact me if you absolutely need this "feature".)
  • Reworded some preferences for better understanding.
  • Updated File List's documentation with a short paragraph on using back references in regular expressions.

ILIKEIMAC  I had the same problem with Name Mangler under Snow Leopard that others have reported; it loads files into its list at an unbearable slow speed, and I even force quit it several times convinced it had frozen. What solved it for me was turning off "Show icon previews for image files." This setting is in the General section of the preferences and applies to video files as well as image files; I noticed Name Mangler was fine if I dragged in non-video, non-image files like MP3s, and after turning this setting off, it's fine for video and images as well.

CLAUCLAU  I used r-name which still is useful for pre Leopard users: maybe this is the only downside of Name Mangler.

But R-name is disappeared.

I have a camera which everytime i swap SD card, it renames files from zero. And there is no option to avoid it.

Therefore once I download files in one folder, OS X creates a file-001 and files-001 2 in order to avoid asking that a file with that name (from the previous SD card) already exist.

OS X understands it that is probably not the same video and therefore silently makes this trick.

Now problem is, that when renaming files chronologically I have to list files by date of creation, as in other view mode, they're sorted alphabetically. When I then drag the files to any software like Automator or others to rename them, these files get messed up, therefore renaming task useless.

Name Mangler smartly override this problem, and lets you sort the files in any order you want. This app is not a simple stuff:

This app made my day.

PS I know i wrote like somebody who got paid, but no, i am a simple user.

HAL0THANE  I have been a very frequent user of File List for several months but two things always bugged me about it: First, it was PPC only; and second, the window was not selectable with Command-Tab. Both have been addressed with the new Name Mangler 2.0.

Name Manger 2.0 retains all the power of File List -- including the Advanced renaming syntax which I use very frequently -- and only expands on it. The droplet feature is fantastic for quickly renaming files that have the same pattern without having to reenter the pattern each time: simply save the droplet onto the Desktop or even into the Finder window and then drop the files onto it. They're renamed transparently.

This little utility is one of those that makes me HAPPY to donate to its future development even when I'm not constantly nagged into doing so. If all software were written like Name Mangler 2.0, I'd have very empty pockets indeed!

SPANKY DELUXE  I've been using this app for several months now and it really is great. So useful. However, since upgrading to Snow Leopard the app has been very slow in loading up its file list that I've dragged into it. While doing so it slows my whole computer down making other apps stutter. This is on a Quad core Mac Pro with 6GB of RAM so I don't think my system is the problem.
