Help MacUpdate by , and win an iPod!

DESCRIPTION

ShowVolumeFragmentation uses hfsdebug from Mr. Amit Singh. Display details of all fragmented files on any available disk volume , unfragmented freespace and the hotfiles.

SFV and hfsdebug will NOT change/modify your Volumes - it will only read the HFS+ structure !

Even Panther/Tiger help to avoid fragmentation or defrag it by the system (with lot of restrictions !) , a look at YOUR fragmentation situation may produce a "What ?! - I thought that's only an OS 9 problem".

Best way to keep your HD speedy is to leave > 20% freespace OR buy an newer , bigger HD.

Please option-click (to save file to desktop) for download the .sitx if your browser loads a page of code instead of downloading the file normally.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 0.80:
  • rewriten, cleaner GUI
  • tabed result window, much better if you have more volumes to test
  • results as textfile(excelfile) , Textedit can read this
  • deactivated hotfile results
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4 or later (10.3 should work), PPC/Intel (Rosetta), hfsdebug, screen at least 1024x700 pixel

JACKWEB  This is Intel too?? As when I check the apps info it tells me it's PPC, same in Activity Monitor.

hfsdebug is also PPC, did the developer really update anything?? :/

    ***..

OLIVERNIELSEN  I appreciate this freeware work. However, I have experienced confusion, because the file linked from macupdate.com is a sitx stuffit file, and version 0.80, but at the authors website the version offered is 0.71 packed as a zip. Unpacking that one reveals a version 0.75 - so what the hell is what? The version 0.80 linked from macupdate is indeed the latest version it seems, but the applications menu is in german?! Weird.

    And the weirdness continues:

The app has speech turned on. As if it's presuming I'm blind?!

(And no I don't have speech turned on)...

MITCH_DE  Speech will be disabled in later versions.

The .sitx Problem is made by my Webspace ISP, he didnt know mime type of .sitx.

In next version (soon ) you will get an .sitx.zip which can be downloaded without the .txt added (by the browser, not me).

There is also i litte bug comparing piechart old/new which will be fixed in V0.81.

    Thanks for comment.

ERICOB  DEVELOPERS: please do not name your expanded files or folders cryptically!!

This program ("ShowVolumeFragmentation") downloads as "ShowVolumeFrag.zip" which expands to a folder named "SVF.'

In the 1,193 items in my "downloads" folder, how the heck am I supposed to find that!?

Please be explicit in your naming.

A version number in both the archive and expanded versions would be greatly appreciated also.

ELEGRAPHY  Please use Apple's Disk Utility to compress this app into a .dmg file instead. I have donwloaded SVF and it did end up with a .txt file. Everytime I delete the .txt extension and un-stuffit the .sitx file, it's end up with another .txt file with a folder called SVF.

I understand the original file has 4.9MB, and use .sitx could compress it to 1.4MB. I just used Apple's Disk Utility to compress your SVF folder into 2MB, and it worked perfectly. The .dmg maybe a bit larger then .sitx file, but it'll be much easier for most people who do not use Stuffit on their Mac...Just a friendly suggestion...

Please delete the .txt ending to get .sitx insted of .sitx.txt.

    Thanks

MACUPDATE ADMIN  It seems that these things happen most often due to the MIME type not being set correctly at the server, in my experience.

STUFFIT  If you are using Apache, add this line:

To the end of this file:

MACUPDATE ADMIN  I've been an Apple user since the Apple II and I can't recall the developers of Stuffit ever being forthcoming with *real* help/info/support until now, when Stuffit appears to be in danger of losing their user base (example: Apple stopped shipping Stuffit with 10.4, HURRAY!!)

And I do recall very clearly that every Stuffit update from about 4.1 onward (or thereabouts, most certainly at version 4.5) caused all sorts of trouble for us Mac users and developers. What sort of trouble, you may ask? The downloaded files would not open and with each successive update, Stuffit got worse in being able to handle 'legacy' .sit files, etc. The stupidity seemed without end, every update brought the most unbelievably stupid new issues.

Stuffit has seen its day come and go and I for one will be glad to see its ultimate demise. Allume, you are "too late to the party" and you should only die an ignominious and swift death forthwith. We OS X Mac users do not need your poor excuse for code anymore.

And another thing, I remember when Allume was 'Alladin' and the company bought up two of my favorite sharewares (Weathertracker was one, I forget the name of the other) and promptly let them rot. So should Allume. Rot. Now. Die.

NCIANCA  1) This app will broadcast your root/admin password via ps!

    2) This app will not quit when asked if you have already initiated it. It will close the window there is no way to quit without killing it.

    3) The interface needs to adopt some basic Apple GUI standards.

If you are looking to get a "picture" of your hard drive, take a look at GrandPerspective (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19515). While it doesn't show fragmented files, it does show file/disk usage in a graphical manner.

iDefrag is also a good utility to actually defrag your drives (but has a horrible license scheme).

MITCH  "1) This app will broadcast your root/admin password via ps!"

The password "stays" on your secure area !

Notbing of password or personal data is transfered outside of the app (to a file) or over lan/internet.

The only data transfered is the version number of hfsdebug - but only if sou use "check hfsdebug version" in the information menu.

The reason why the app still doesnt use the standard OS X password dialog is simple:

RB still didnt have that buildin, i would need to pay for an kommercial plugin.

If RB supports OS X password dialog, sure the app will use it.

Sure, the GUI needs more work - buts V071.

CHUCKER23N  The admin password is clearly readable as part of a process you launch, like here:

    someMachine:~ someUser$ ps axww | grep 1fi

    10568 ?? S 0:00.00 sh -c echo "" | sudo -S /Users/someUser/Desktop/hfsdebug -V / -f -t 200 > /Users/someUser/Desktop.hfsnew.txt

You should use Apple's security framework to launch hfsdebug with admin privileges, not sudo.
