DR. GIRLFRIEND  Alternative (and superior, imho) app for OCR: Abbyy Finereader Express. Bonus - Works beautifully in conjunction with Fuji ScanSnap and is a fraction of the cost of Acrobat at $99.00. You can find it here:

You can fill out forms, overlay text, graphics, draw on, and edit pdfs with any number of free or low cost alternative apps. Two of my favorites freebies are Skim and Formualte Pro:

DONMONTALVO  What's the point of continuing to pipe money into the Adobe coffers? Adobe's products are bloated, their installers stink, and they have lousy response time for resolving reported issues.

There are several free or inexpensive PDF applications out there. My favorite is PDFpenPro, which is a fraction of the price, faster and more Mac like than anything Adobe has to offer.

Adobe is trying to appease share holders...it's only a matter of time before the public picks up on this. Enterprise environments have a huge stake in Adobe products (read: they're stuck). Consumers and freelance/SOHO users are not.

DONMONTALVO  ...did I forget to mention that their installers are horrible? Littering various directories on OSX systems is a clear sign that the Adobe development group needs to be shaken down, to get some fresh blood (who adhere to the Apple software delivery guidelines).

FILCHESCAT  The announcement of an 'update' entices hordes of people to take advantage of it. Again, wait before you jump in. The outcome is a repeat of the update to 9.2 in mid-2009. Check Adobe's forums. It's the same old problem. The update is successful for some and doesn't do squat for others. If you'll look at the Adobe forums, you'll see that weeks go by w/o a comment form Adobe staff, then a newbee tier 1 house elf begins to address the issue anew with the same old rote suggestions that didn't work before. Does Adobe care - doesn't seem to. In my case, when I try to update from 9.2 (yes, I was one of those who finally got the update to work after literally weeks of hit and miss tries), I get the same message I got from my initial attempts to go from 9.1 to 9.2 - the update failed because some kind of modification was detected (not). I am then referred to what is called the 'Adobe support website' for more information (non-existent) or I am invited to completely un-install and re-install the app. I actually tried that again, retrograding back to 9.0.0, which resulted in the same error message when the new update was attempted. Thanks Adobe.

Using a mid-2009 MacPro with plenty of ram and OS 10.6.2

ERIC WOEHLER  No - the printer driver is still busted under SL: the "Adobe PDF 9.0" printer option still shows an enclosed exclamation mark on the printer list.

ERIC WOEHLER  This may help others in the same situation...

I re-installed Acrobat Pro off the CS4 install DVD. The installer failed with a message indicating it was missing files and the suggestion was made to re-install the entire CS4 package (!). I spent an hour or so on the Adobe support pages and decided against re-installation of all of CS 4 just to upgrade Acrobat from 9.1.3 to 9.3.

I restarted my mac and opened Acrobat 9.0.0 (vanilla fresh off the DVD) then hit the 'check for updates' under the Help menu. The updater found a 380 MB file to d/l and it took about 15 minutes to run and install various files etc. Admin password required several times. Finally, the updater finished and I was left with Acrobat 9.3.

The whole exercise took several hours and clearly is not an award-winning experience for users. I suggest Adobe needs to improve its act if it cares about its users. Time will tell!

JEFFREY HARRIS  After all that, did Adobe fix the broken Acrobat Pro printer driver under Snow Leopard?

ERIC WOEHLER  Doesn't see Acrobat Pro 9.1.3 to update. All files (Pro, Distiller etc) are shaded grey and unselectable. Vanilla install of Acrobat Pro from CS4 DVD with updates to 9.1.3 and then thats it?????????????????

Adobe ranks right up there with M$ re customer satisfaction is concerned as far as I am concerned - after using Macs for 25+ years, only Adobe and M$ give me so much grief.

JCHERIAN  According to : http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4606

"The update [Acrobat Pro 9.3.0] can be applied to version 9.2 of Adobe Acrobat Professional."

So try updating your 9.1.3 to 9.2.0 first, then apply 9.3.0.

Sorry for the redundant answer. When I wrote it he had not posted it yet.

RUBAIYAT  Adobe is a bureaucratic shocker on this, with poorly named upgrades and lack of real documentation.

I remember in OS9 DLing an Adobe PS Printer Driver, every link on the web and stage of archive had a different obscure name. Then when I finally got to the installer it was brilliantly named "USA"! You have to wonder at the minds behind this.

You will have to step through every single update one by one to get to the latest.

OZEAN  I used Adobe Updater and it worked without any problems. This is in 10.6.1 set to English on a MacBook Pro 2,2.

Also, saving as Adobe PDF finally seems to work. (I never got it to work reliably after updating to 10.6 where there is no Adobe PDF printer anymore. Now we have the Print > PDF > Save as Adobe PDF function, which had big problems - hopefully my impression that those are fixed now is correct!)

SANCHAI  Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.2 update fail to upgrade 9.1.3 to 9.2 properly. Same failure as mentioned above.

The error dialog read "Update failed. The patch has failed because the application has been modified since it was originally installed (for example, plug-ins may have been disabled). Please go to the Adobe support website for more information regarding how to re-enable disabled components prior to installing the patch. Or, you can install and reinstall the application, and then reinstall the patch."

Adobe Reader update to 9.2 run fine. I have seen this failure in many places around the net. Caome on Adobe here you go again. New update that work please!
