ROGER GOODE  Hi, I have installed DisApPeAr 1.0 and stupidly then hidden it... not now knowing how to make it reappear. What's the simplest way? I have placed a file within it but can't now retrieve that file, until I can put DisApPeAr back on my desktop.

I should have left it on the desktop, protected by its password.... :0(

FELINITY  I love this little app. simple and handy.

It wont protect against those who know how to find hidden files, but for casual use it is great. Hide your personal data, emails, letters.. and, well, porn. enjoy :)

8OO8  Just gave DisApPeAr a "test drive"; it works just fine. I like it! I think I'll keep it.

As others, including the developer, have pointed out, a savvy Mac user can find the hidden file/folder. But for all practical purposes, most prying eyes would be unaware that the hidden file/folder is on your hard disk

(you could change the name of your file or folder before hiding it, that would make it more difficult to find).

If you really want to make files/folders inaccessable to everyone, you'll need to encrypt them. But there are a number of good, easy to use encryption programs available.

I never wrote a 1.02 version and the one Macupdate has linked is an older version. If you want the current version 1.0 get it here: http://www.widgetfactor.com/downloads/DisApPeAr.zip

8OO8  Well, I thought I'd give this app a try but neither the download nor the developer's website are available now. I guess DisApPeAr has just disappeared!

Oh well, another ephemeral software developer.

8OO8  You're right, they ARE both still there! I tried accessing both the download and the website twice just a little while ago and both were inaccessible; I got a message on my desktop telling me that my Mac couldn't connect both times.

I just tried again after your(Administrator) posting, above, and no problem! Don't know what was wrong(????).

BRYAN GOLDSTEIN  ^ didn't finish writing what to note: Please note that hiding files is a good way to keep files from the average computer goer but it will not prevent someone who knows what they are doing from retrieving them.

ANONYMOUS  Bearing in mind that this isn`t real stealth to someone who `knows` Macs - I like it.

I have had no trouble with it btw.

BRYAN GOLDSTEIN  In macintosh system files are hidden so that their isn't a mess of system files all over finder. DisApPeAr makes files act as system files. Since you can only unhide files on your list if the list is reset all of the files that were hidden on it become lost, that is why I added the recover lost file button. The added recover lost file button just runs an open file dialog, showing all the hiden files and when you open a file if it is hidden, DisApPeAr unhides the the lost file.

ANONYMOUS  Gee, but I fail to see how you can 'hide' anything on Unix - without of course destroying it.

I think you should expect people to be told how this 'application' works before they try it. Considering the responsibility you have with other people's files, that's the very least you can do.
