DESCRIPTION
Measuring Cup is a recipe management program written in Cocoa, specifically for the Mac OS X operation system. I wrote it for myself because I didn't see anything that I liked back in 2002. I finished in 2003 but didn't polish it for release; I wasn't sure if someone else would like it. Some of my friends saw it and started using it as well. They then wanted me to polish it up and release it. So in 2004, I decided to officially release it and call the software "Measuring Cup".

I would like to think that it is the easiest to use recipe management software out there in the Mac OS X land. Think iTunes or iPhoto for recipes. Specifically, these are the features:

  • Simple organization of recipes. iTunes/iPhoto kind of organization. Allows user defined categories and sub-categories. Searchable.
  • In-place editing. Some software have a presentation view that is different from a editing view. I find that cumbersome. I like to edit my recipe as easy as when I am viewing it.
  • Undo/Redo support. Good - no, make that great - undo/redo support. I am a careless person and tend to make mistakes and so I absolutely need this support.
  • Simple view of a recipe. Shows the most important detail in the main screen. The rest is tucked away in an Aqua drawer.
  • Aqua luscious. I try to be a good OS X citizen.
  • XML backing store. You probably don't care about this but I thought it would be cool to mention it. All recipes are stored as XML file for easy sharing eventually.

DKHALEY  Program works very well. There are only two features I find it's lacking:

    * A "Notes" section; easy workaround is to put this in the free text description field

    * The ability to print multiple recipes at once

    Otherwise works great.

    ****.

LAURIER  This program is easy to get the hang of, and completes the task I set out to do (record my recipes). I've never had a problem with saving, and it's very easy to back up (it would be a shame to lose all the recipes if my computer crashed).

I find it to be a very basic "work in progress" program. A few features I'd like to see in upcoming versions would a feature for rating recipes, the ability to alphabetise recipes (instead of having to do it by hand), ability to rearrange the meal categories (and create meal sub categories). I'd also like the ability to change the print option so the recipe can fit on a 4x6 card without me having to cut it.

PINKBLUERIVER  Measuring Cup is a great program - easy to view and edit at the same time. Simple, intuitive display means not having to read any manual or figure out jargon.

I saw the review about not being able to save. This is hardly the case, you can use the drop down menu to save or simply hit the universal "x" and it prompts you to remind you and, yes, it also allows you to save this way.

I looked at other programs and this is just as good and certainly a lot easier to use.

Thanks for such a great tool.

MACWORKS  I looked at quite a few recipe management apps before settling on Measuring Cup. It works (saves all my stuff, don't know what the other guy's problem is); its easy to use and has what I thought was the best combination of features including sub-recipes. haven't got to the stage where it being asked to deal with a few hundred recipes but if I get there and it works I would donate to the author.

    **½..

APIKOROS  Disaster! A nice try, and much appreciated as donationware, but I will not donate... because IT DOESN'T SAVE DATA! Despite my many "Save" commands, via keyboard shortcut (Command-S) and the menu bar, and by choosing "Save" when prompted by the "Quit"command (which doesn't always quit the app...), the next launch brought up only the bare-bones downloaded app, with its "sample" categtories and recipes... but none of what I spent HOURS entering!! Talk about a bummer! (I'm using OS 10.3.9 on a dual-USB G3 iBook.)

DARREN   That other review wasn't by me. The whole last half is by someone else. Same with the ratings.

    DARREN  Looks really nice!

One thing, and maybe this is too much to ask, is it possible to have it stocked with recipes as some other recipe apps do?

But it looks quite simple and nicely done a la iTunes/iPhoto.

Will submit to my wife for more testing as she's the cooking boss (me, I can do eggs really well, that's about it).
