DESCRIPTION
Taboo is a simple Safari hack which provides a warning before quitting or closing a browser window containing multiple tabs.

You can also disable those annoying warning messages that Safari now presents when downloading a file which contains an application. To do this, simply execute the following command from the terminal, after having installed Taboo:

defaults write com.ocdev.taboo ShouldDisplaySecurityWarnings -bool NO

then restart Safari.

Taboo makes use of SIMBL (Smart InputManager Bundle Loader) to modify the default behaviour of Safari. You can find out more information about SIMBL here. Questions, comments, suggestions, or bug reports can be sent to

WHAT'S NEW
  • Suppresses warning messages if shift key is held down while closing a window.
  • Now uses CFPreferences to store user settings.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.3 or later.

STEVE ROGERS  Taboo doesn't work with the new Safari 3 Beta. It actually disables the Close Window command completely on my G4 iMac!

GRTGRFX  Apparently, the move to Intel has broken taboo. While Taboo works with 10.4.X OS on PPC macs, it no longer has any effect in Safari on Intel Macs. Bummer!

DAVID R WEBB  I was using this on the PowerBook but it will not run on my new MacBook! I would like to defeat the 'download contains an application' warning. Are there anyother ways of doing this?

GAOSHAN  Five months after the previous comment the warning about SIMBL, in the console, is still appearing and no fix has been made for Taboo. I, for one, am suspicious about recent Safari crashes and this message so I am going to delete Taboo for the time being.

ANONYMOUS  console.app says: The plugin /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/Taboo.bundle (com.ocdev.taboo) is using a deprecated interface to SIMBL. Please contact the appropriate developer (not the SIMBL author) and refer them to http://culater.net/wiki/moin.cgi/CocoaReverseEngineering

I emailed the developer, who has not acknowledged or otherwise responded to the report.

    ***½.

ANONYMOUS  It seems Taboo causes Safari to crash occasionally, mostly right after scrolling down a page when multiple tabs are opened in the back.

ANONYMOUS  Great little, but needed app. If it states that you cannot install it because you have an older version of SIMBL, but in reality you have newer version, simply open the package folder and use the Taboo package installer alone.

ALEX KADIS  Taboo is great, it brings Safari a long needed feature.

I can't help but wonder if the developer would be willing to add a feature: the ability to save/restore URLs in currently opened windows/tabs. Every applescript that I've found don't seem to work in recent versions of Safari, and maybe a plugin such as this would do nicely. The plugin might be able to work without relying on UI scripting that can change.

I know that Saft can do this, but Saft is incompatible with Pithhelmet and Pithhelmet's ad-blocking takes precedence in my mind.

RICHARD  I installed Taboo tonight on a new iMac G5 running Tiger 10.4.1. After that could not open Safari, just the rainbow ball. Had to force quit, message was that Safari not responding.

Tried logging out and in again. Tried running Disk Repair, permissions, cache clean out, checked prefs. No problems found and continued inabiity to use Safari.

Had to reinstall 10.4, archive and install. This fixed it. Took some time so I regreted installing this software.

    Hope others have more luck.

AM  Great - just what is needed to move from Firefox. No install or use problems so far. Mac OS X 10.3.9.

Now all I need is Click and Hold to bring up menu functionality like in Firefox to complete the move.

Anyone know how to import saved site usernames and passwords from Firefox to Safari?
