DESCRIPTION

Knox... As the only integrated solution for encryption and backup, Knox makes securing your files easier than ever. Create as many encrypted vaults as you want, each with separate passwords. Then schedule automatic backups. You can even reformat USB sticks and external drives as encrypted Knox vaults - moving files between Macs has never been so simple and secure.

Knox uses the Mac OS X encrypted disk images feature, the technology behind FileVault, to protect your data. This means that your vaults are encrypted by the U.S. Government’s new Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) with 256-bit or 128-bit key length. The AES algorithm is secure, but don’t take our word for it: even the NSA has found its strength to be sufficient for protecting classified national security information. The implication? Your data will be safe whether it's a rogue kid or a rogue nation going after it.

And because the encrypted disk images are supported as standard in Mac OS X, Knox vaults - including whole disks encrypted with Knox - can be opened even without Knox installed.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.6.4:
  • Fixed a bug where known vaults would be erroneously identified as new additions resulting in duplicate entries.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later.

AV  It does what i need it to do, and is secure & reliable - which is exactly the two qualities you want to be associated with secure file storage software. Recommended.

JOI  This is a top of the line product. I use it to create encrypted vaults I can easily access. It runs flawlessly and I have used it for years. Vaults are like encrypted folders which mount and unmount when you want them. Knox makes accessing them easy.

I also am a registered user of goSecure which I like to use to encrypt "individual files" to email to my friends which also have a copy of goSecure.

Hope this was helpful.

MACSTERDAM  Knox is one of the very few essential programs for me. I'm on a macbook pro and have various pieces of info stored on encrypted diskimages. Sure, I do do this by just using disk utility, but knox makes managing disk images so much easier, it's well worth the small fee.

Seriously excellent!!

DELTA FARCE  Knox is a good tool. It doesn't do much you could not do less conveniently with free tools. But it is affordable and polished, and most importantly its shinky icons and understandable terminology make it easy to explain basic security procedures even to the security challenged. One of the first ten apps I install when setting up a Mac.

VVARP  Knox is very important part of my day-to-day workflow.

Except keeping my work files in separate vaults, I use it together with SmartBackup to keep secure backup of my home directory - very good combination!

The only thing I miss is Automator actions for making backup copies of your vaults. This can be achieved through copying vaults, but I would like to keep all Knox specific backup settings like keeping up to x recent backups, etc.

Great tool, 5 stars.

CONSTANTIN  I purchased Knox because I thought it was a neat program that could help me run multiple data vaults with ease. The thought being that I could have one vault for a laptop hard drive backup, another for documents, etc.

Trouble is, Knox keeps crashing when I try to move large numbers of files. Worse, it destroys its prefs file or wherever it stores its registration information, requiring me to re-enter the serial number over and over.

Ultimately, it may be easier to simply put aliases to encrypted DMG files on my desktop and calling it a day. At least if these crash, I do not have to re-enter the serial number again.

For those that care, these problems crop up on a G5 Tower whether I'm doing firewire transfers in target disk mode or plain-jane AFP transfers.

MARKONEN  Hi, and sorry about the crashing problem you've encountered. They are certainly not common among our users, so I suspect there could be something wrong with your system. For example, Knox is not really performing any part of a file copying process, so having Knox crash on file transfers is not normal at all.

Please write to heldesk at knoxformac.com and we'll investigate more. I think we might have seen crash reports from you, but I don't think they included contact information.

Again, sorry about the crashes -- I hope we can get the issue sorted.

CONSTANTIN  Hi there,

Some further review showed that the issues I was having with Knox quitting were related to FileVault being turned on. I am not sure why, but other file-related operations in the OS were having issues also. Once I turned FileVault off, these issues with copying files into and out of my home folder disappeared.

Thus, there is hope that Knox will be stable from now on, but I'll have to dig up and re-enter my registration code first. As an improvement suggestion for future releases, it would be great if system crashes, etc. would not cause Knox to lose its registration information also. Thanks, and I'll be back to post an update re: Knox stability in the future. Cheers, C.

GEE4ORCE  1.5 adds backup features, and full volume vaults. This last feature works really well - the volume mounts just like any other on your Mac, even though what's really going on is that it's a sparse image on the disk (I think !).

In any case, this goes some way towards answering the criticism that most of these features are in the OS already - Sure, but Knox makes using them easy.

Whatever - I got Knox in a bundle with PathFinder, so I'm happy :) !

GRYPHONENT  This is a similar app like GhostShpere but looks better and offers more user convenience. However, the price tag of US$ 30 is steep and double that of similar applications. I would immediately purchase Knox for US$15. As pointed out in this forum and in the feedback for the other apps in this domain: there are easy ways to get the same results and create a secure disk image with Apples own DiskUtility. It needs two or three clicks more... and whether these are worth US$ 30 is up for discussion.

ANONYMOUS  Nice program, and makes secure disk image management easier (as a previous commenter said, most of the functionality is built into recent MacOSs, and Knox actually uses that technology), but IMO overpriced unless backup via sftp is added and/or the price is lowered.

Hopefully this program will improve with a 1.1 and become one of those little gems that make being a Mac user so _worth it_.

ANONYMOUS  This has been built into the Mac OS for a long, long time, its called disk images, just no pretty face on it, as it does not need one to type just a password.
