DESCRIPTION
MozoDojo is a photo-mosaic creator. You give it a model image and an image database, and it tries to build a mosaic looking like the model image by picking up the tiles in the database. The image database may be a simple folder, an iPhoto or Aperture album, a sequence, a bunch of CD covers from iTunes, or a Delicious Library shelf.
MozoDojo is free for personal use.

DAWGDRUMMER I was unable to access my hard drive where I keep my photos. I use Photoshop and I do not keep pictures on the main drive. Am I missing something here?

DAWGDRUMMER I tried to email you and it was refused, so this is the only way I know to get in touch with you. Yes I did use the + button and I was not able to get to my other hard drives. Seems like a nice program though!

For my e-mail, remove the "_nospam" if you found the mail address on the web site. For your problem, it's true that I did not manage to reproduce exactly the nice, standard, file browser of MacOS X to select a path to an image bank. So, your external devices will be available in /Volumes (at the root). This is the "real" path that the Finder usually simplifies. Pierre Chatelier

MICHAEL GREEN Excellent program. It's easy to use, flexible and seems to be stable. I tried MacOSaiX, but it crashed four consecutive times, so I downloaded this program instead, and it has not failed me yet. Also, I like the color tinting. It may be "cheating" but the results are quite nice.

ANONYMOUS Works well, think MacOSaiX is slightly better, but I like your interface more though. Couple things i would like to see added: 1) multiple sources selectable simultaneously 2)would like the following to be able to be used as sources of pictures b) quicktime(or any) movie frames c) ability to select a folder AND all it's subfolders

Thanks for your comments ! Now here is my opinion : 1) multiple sources selectable simultaneously Yeah, it seems so obvious that I find it strange that you are the first one to ask for it. Nobody (neither me) has thought to that before ! It's done at home, but I think I won't make a release just for it. 2)would like the following to be able to be used as sources of pictures I do not like the idea, since in my opinion, you make a mosaic with your images ! If you want to use some images from google, download them before, and use it from your hard disk. b) quicktime(or any) movie frames I am not sure I will know how to do that... c) ability to select a folder AND all it's subfolders (4/28/2005, Version: 1.3) Now that you can select more than one source, it is a little different, but it is still not recursive (cannot select every subfolders (deeply speaking) in a single click). But when I own Tiger, I can do that; however, it will be Tiger only... This is related to my problem to keep up-to-date the little number indicating the number of images in a folder.

ANONYMOUS It would be fantastic if this program, like MacOSaiX, would fetch images from Google Image Search, because the greater variety of images at our disposal, the better the result. Another GREAT feature would be to regulate how much RAM and CPU time this program can use. Personally, I don't have a G5 with gigabytes of RAM, and it would be swell to moderate it. Or maybe include a PAUSE button?

I developed MozoDojo on an iBook G4, so I am actually very careful about processor and RAM. The quantity of RAM used by the program is a mystery for me. As MozoDojo is running, you can check in the Activity Monitor that it *does not* use much RAM (about 170 MB). However, the "active memory (yellow)" is increasing almost constantly. And when you quit MozoDojo, "this active memory" is not released, as if it was in fact used by the kernel and not by MozoDojo. I am looking forward Tiger to see if it would behave differently. Be also sure that I took care about memory leaks. About Google Image, for now, it's no. MozoDojo is made for personal photomosaic, that is to say using your pictures, not the ones of Google. If you want to use some google images, just download them before. It is my point of view. Pierre Chatelier

FARHAN HAFETZ absolutely amazing. thanks! works great and relatively speedy on my iBook G4 1Ghz with 512mb ram. it can't really find my iphoto library, so i simply exported all my photos from iphoto into another folder. simple and effective. keep up the good work! to those who complain, maybe u should create your own mozaic manually. it may have its bugs here and there, but this is something worth supporting.

ANONYMOUS I have a deeply nested collection of pictures, animals, space images, landscapes, all gleaned from the web (and bulletin boards before the web, and scanned) over the years. I've organized animals (for example) into an abbreviated mostly-Linnean tree: Mammalia/Carnivora/Canidae/Dogs, Wolves, Foxes, etc... Mozo seems to only see one directory at a time. It really needs to walk a whole tree.

ANONYMOUS Yes, MozoDojo does not browse directories recursively. It is a choice related to performance reasons. To avoid this problem, just create a folder containing aliases to your pictures files (I hope it will work with Tiger's smart folders), and it should work well.

PIERRE CHATELIER Yes, but the problem is that I count the images in the directories; and I try to keep that information up-to-date. So, if I was considering the folders recursively, browsing the tree inside MozoDojo would be (believe me), very slooow (I tried it). In fact, it would be slow for deep folders architecture. And nothing prevents the user to set "/" as the "custom folder". Now, just imagine MozoDojo trying to count in real-time the number of images on your hard drive ? Argh !

Do not hesitate to send me reports or crash logs by e-mail. It is a first public release, so even if there were 0 known bugs before releasing, there must be some problems anyway. What pleases me is that apparently, crashes occur only on launching, not while computing; it is far more easy to fix. During launching, MozoDojo reads the iPhoto database (if it exists), the delicious library database (if it exists) and your pictures folder. Perhaps a problem in one of these may lead to a crash...

ANONYMOUS I would suggest asking before going into any specific database on disk. For example, I keep the directory that I use for mosaics under ~/Media/Web... looking anywhere else is just a waste of time.
