DESCRIPTION

Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based strategy game with a fantasy theme.

Build up a great army, gradually turning raw recruits into hardened veterans. In later games, recall your toughest warriors and form a deadly host against whom none can stand! Choose units from a large pool of specialists, and hand-pick a force with the right strengths to fight well on different terrains against all manner of opposition.

Wesnoth has many different sagas waiting to be played out. Fight to regain the throne of Wesnoth, of which you are the legitimate heir... step into the boots of a young officer sent to guard a not-so-sleepy frontier outpost... vanquish a horde of undead warriors unleashed by a foul necromancer, who also happens to have taken your brother hostage... guide a band of elvish survivors in an epic quest to find a new home.

200+ unit types. 16 races. 6 major factions. Hundreds of years of history. The world of Wesnoth is absolutely huge and limited only by your creativity - make your own custom units, compose your own maps, and write your own scenarios or even full-blown campaigns. You can also challenge up to 8 friends - or strangers - and fight in epic multi-player fantasy battles.

ZARN THE MAD  The installer refuses to install to my HD. It claims I need at least Mac OS 10.4.4 to use the software. Since I have version 10.4.11 installed, I suspect that there is an error in the installer's configuration.

And yes, it is an Intel machine (Mac Pro). :)

KELTIA  I have the same problem with 1.5.2 & 10.4.11. My main gripe with this 1.5.x series is that while an installer is nice, 1. it has never been necessary before (the application can be installed as many others, with the mouse) and 2., more importantly, it is not relocatable anymore.

Sorry, I hate applications that install themselves only in /Applications, I use /Users/Shared for third-party apps.

This is seriously backward.

ROBOTANK  Try using Pacifist to extract the application from the installer bundle. Then you can do what you wish with it, and you won't have to worry about the installer not working properly.

OZEAN  In the latest incarnation of Wesnoth (1.6 and onward) the developers went back to a standard Mac install: just drop the app icon into the Applications folder and you’re ready to go!

PETER BALCON  This is an outstanding example of a free, open-source game. In every aspect that really counts, it excels.

The AI is extremely good, head and shoulders above many expensive strategy and fantasy RPGs. The 2D graphics have matured markedly since its earlier versions, and a lot of effort has gone into balancing the various creatures you can play and fight.

Be warned, this game is not easy, and is extremely addictive! Regular saves will save a lot of grief!

A very big well-done to the development team for this one.

OZEAN  I have to chime in with others here and tell you that this game has always been great fun. Playability is excellent and you can use different styles of play to accomplish your goals. In the recent versions, however, this game has also become very refined in terms of its user interface, the sounds and the music and practically all other aspects of the game. If you have at least a little fun with strategy games, you must try this one!

GAOSHAN  You said it. This is really an outstanding example of this sort of application. It gets better and better as they move along in developing it. Development is consistent and steady, changes are always for the better, not for the bloat. I love this game!

JOHN NOWAK  One of the best open source games available. Very solid gameplay, although I think it could be just the slightest bit deeper. Nice, reserved graphics and sound as well.

GAOSHAN  Oh, a quick tip/hint. If you are totally stuck on a certain level and cannot defeat the enemy, using a hex editor like HexEdit (available here on MacUpdate) pop open the saved game file (it will be in ~/Library/Preferences/Wesnoth/saves), do a search for the amount of gold you currently have and change the number to something greater. This will give you the boost you may need to get past a particularly sticky spot.

I personally only do this when my adventure will be over because I cannot advance due to being overwhelmed by the enemy.
