Help MacUpdate by , and win an iPod!

DESCRIPTION
SSHFun is an AppleScript Studio application designed to establish a secure connection between Macintosh computers by tunnelling ports 548 (Apple File Share), 3031 (Apple Remote Events) and 5900 (VNC) through port 22 (Secure Shell, SSH) using Terminal (Applications/Utilities). The features of SSHFun operate inside a secure environment whether in a Home or Office LAN (Local Area Network) or indeed over the internet WAN (Wide Area Network). Please note prior exchange of SSH Keys (for ultimate security) is strongly recommended if you intend to use the program over a network which is not secure (inherently the internet itself). Alerts in respect of errors, progress or reply messages are displayed in SSHFun's blue console. Features include:
  • Mount a remote directory on your Desktop
  • Open a URL in a remote Safari
  • Message a remote SSHFun and capture the reply
  • Set a remote iChat's Status Message
  • Play a track from a remote iTunes Library or open a stream
  • Speak the text
WHAT'S NEW
Option 1: New Information button:
  • Lists IP addresses on the Local Area Network
  • Lists all users currently logged into you
  • Displays the local, recent AFP error log
  • Displays the local, recent Firewall log
  • Displays the local, recent System log
  • Displays the local System Profile, abridged

Option 6: iTunes
  • Filter now includes "URL" for opening the given IP address or domain name of an iTunes compatible stream (example: http://theDomain:8000/)
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.3 or later.

BOSIE  Option #4 in SSHFun send screen message.

    Error applicable to Tiger:

Finder got an error: No user interaction allowed. (-1713)

User authentication or interaction appears to have changed in Tiger, I'm trying to find a workaround to fix this. Thanks for your patience.

    *½...

REVERB  Not very well designed. Besides the UI issues noted by the other reviewer, there are mistakes like displaying passwords in plain view, instead of masking them with bullets or spaces. SSHFun has several other glitches, many of them due to its reliance on Apple's Terminal application to control the SSH tunnel. It's fragile, but when I coaxed it into connecting, it did operate as advertised. But there are much better alternatives for remotely controlling a Mac.

BOSIE  Hi Reverb, thank you for the review. Could you help me out here and be more specific on the 'several glitches' you've found so I can try to resolve them?

SSHFun 's purpose is not essentially to remotely control a Mac but it would help to know what the 'better alternatives' are too.

    Thanks alot.

REVERB  The "back up your claims" instruction is meant to deter people whose reviews say only, "This sucks". My review was intended to be brief. It did have some specific examples of what I found lacking. Therefore, I think it fulfilled the requirement. If you were expecting a categorized and bulleted list of every single glitch that I found, your expectations are unrealistic. And my review wouldn't have been brief.

Please understand that MacUpdate is not a free software quality assurance service. If a developer needs someone to do quality assurance, they should hire a professional. It's nice if someone chooses to donate their time and assistance, but it should not be expected.

Also, given the ungracious comments directed at the other reviewer (Kevin Ballard), I am not inclined to spend my time offering feedback that clearly isn't welcome, for an application that doesn't strike me as being very useful anyway.

Regarding the "better alternatives": I thought I might get flamed for mentioning them by name, but since the developer specifically asked: most of this app's functionality can be replicated using SSH Tunnel Manager for managing SSH tunnels, Chicken of the VNC and OSXvnc (or Apple Remote Access Client) for remote-control of another Mac, and iChat rendezvous messaging for getting messages to another Mac. They're all free, offer more features, and I consider them better solutions than this one. Your mileage may vary, of course.

BOSIE  Hi Reverb, thanks for the reply although I wasn't sure if you were addressing me as developper or the comment made by anonymous. I agree VNC is a superb method for visualizing remote windows although it does have limitations (2 people can not simultaneously share one computer) and then there's a speed issue uploading over the internet. SSHFun is able to mount any account or volume whether or not they are already in use and this is all done through a secure shell.

I totally respect your decision in not wanting to elaborate further however please do not associate me with any comments made freely and independantly by others. Ungracious is not a term which can be applied to my own, personal posts. Thank you.

KEVIN BALLARD  Oh geeze, talk about a non-standard HIG. That screenshot alone makes me never want to use this application (not counting the fact that it's ASS or that I'm perfectly happy doing my SSH tunneling on the command-line or with SSHKeychain)

BOSIE  Kevin, you misunderstood. SSHFun is not a SSH GUI. If you're going to judge a book by it's cover what use is the comment?

KEVIN BALLARD  Right, SSHFUn is an application to tunnel two specific services over SSH. I'm perfectly happy doing that myself instead of downloading and using this eyesore.

ANONYMOUS  Kevin- You're soooo smart and I'm sooooo impressed. Just one question: If you're so smart that you can use SSL from the command-line one-handed and blindfolded, than why would you stoop so far as to a) try this software or b) review it? Maybe because you want to impress us with how smart you are?

    Kevin, is this you?

"Involved in the development of a few other Cocoa projects, including SSHKeychain."

I liked Rendezvous Browser, does it also phone home?

Rendezvous Browser wants to connect to magrathea.sb.org on TCP port 80 (http)

    Good luck to you.

KEVIN BALLARD  Yes, that's me, and yes, Rendezvous Browser phones home. Maybe if you opened up the Preferences window you'd notice a checkbox there to enable version checking? That's what it's doing. It's a fairly common practice. I send no information back to my computer - it's simply an HTTP GET request.

Oh, and that blip about SSHKeychain? I'm involved in the development of it because I liked it so much that I started hacking on it (since it's open-source) and contributed patches.

But what does that have to do with anything? The entire point of my original comment was that the interface for SSHFun is godawful ugly.

ANONYMOUS  I happen to like the interface. I've seen a few apps adopting a similar style and it looks nice. It's not like every application on osx has to look the same. Besides, it does what it says it does, so what's the big deal?

BOSIE  Thanks for the feedback, people. It's always encouraging to know when someone has a positive experience. SSHFun started out as a bit of fun amongst friends. I've benefited from trying out so many freebies on here over the years that this is my humble attempt at giving something back. Like it or not and of course I hope that you do, SSHFun's design is not intended to be a traditional clone, a contemporary interpretation perhaps. With kind regards ...
