E_COMMERCE Very interesting. On my MacBook Pro (x86 based) it runs normal Windows exe's without too much fuss. Darwine is nicely packaged into a bundle with all of the Wine frameworks, and an application to facilitate launching Windows exe's. I had no problem running the included clones of RegEdit, Notepad, etc. I was also able to start up VirtualDub (it complained about a bag switch being passed - looks like paths aren't being converted or escaped properly in all cases), but it crashed when trying to play a file. iTunes setup also crashed, but from what I've heard, it's very difficult to get iTunes running in Wine. The "look" of Wine is kludgy - a very Windows 95ish interface with bad fonts and color settings, all inside X11 windows. I can't say that aspect will impress anyone. For my needs (replacing a work PC), I'm waiting for true virtualization software that will allow running a full Windows OS, where I don't have to worry about how well reverse-engineered the OS is (I just have to worry about how well it was written to begin with). This is still a very interesting start, and may work for those who just need to run a few non-demanding Windows applications. (Version 0.9.9 DP) |
