DESCRIPTION
Ardour is a digital audio workstation that runs natively on OS X. You can use it to record, edit and mix multi-track audio. Produce your own CD's. Mix video soundtracks. Experiment with new ideas about music and sound. Generate sound installations for 12 speaker gallery shows...

Ardour capabilities include: multichannel recording, non-destructive editing with unlimited undo/redo, full automation support, a powerful mixer, unlimited tracks/busses/plugins, timecode synchronization, and hardware control from surfaces like the Mackie Control Universal. If you've been looking for a tool similar to ProTools, Nuendo, Pyramix, or Sequoia, you might have found it.

Above all, Ardour strives to meet the needs of professional users. This means implementing all the "hard stuff" that other DAWs (even some leading commercial apps) handle incorrectly or not at all. Ardour has a completely flexible "anything to anywhere" routing system, and will allow as many physical I/O ports as your system allows. Ardour supports a wide range of audio-for-video features such as video-synced playback and pullup/pulldown sample rates. You will also find powerful features such as "persistent undo", multi-language support, and destructive track punching modes that aren't available on other platforms.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 2.8.2:
  • Contains a fix for a another critical bug on OS X that causes ardour to crash when deleting plugins with Carbon-based user interfaces.
  • There are also two other small fixes:
    • logarithmic plugin parameters can now be modified sensibly
    • and when importing files using the "copy files to session" option, an existing BWF timestamp is no longer lost.

MRBOMA  Be aware that this requires Jack. When I installed Jack, it jacked up several of my audio systems. I would rather use a "lesser" app like Audacity or Amadeus that doesn't require Jack or soundflower or any other sound system hack.

ARVIDTP  jack is not a hack... and its very stable in my experience - never has caused me problems at all. Yes, occasionally once in a blue moon jack will have a hiccup, but it doesn't break anything else when it does.

JIC  I paid the fee to download the full product (not the free "light" one), but the download failed. I don't see any place in their WEB site telling how to re-download the product again. Under their support menu, only some technical discussions are published, but nothing related to those mundane issues.

It seems to me that I have lost my money.

STEVEN JAY COHEN  From the developer's site: "I choose to pay US$_____ to download this software."

You didn't buy anything. That was a donation. There is no Lite version. The full Ardour is a GPL product.

JIC  Well, Steven, this is a semantic issue. If you don't pay any donation, you will get only, as they say, "The free version of Ardour 2.8.2 for OS X Intel (which it) does not support saving AudioUnit plugin settings, or using presets for AudioUnit plugins." This version was the one I called the "light" one.

If you want to download the full version, you need to pay a "donation" (suggested US $65), otherwise you will not be able to arrive to the full version download WEB page. But if you pay that "donation", and your download process fail, as it is not uncommon in a 100 MB download, to re-intent the download process you need to pay another "donation" again for every new download attempt until you succeed with the download.

I don't know if the GPL License allows these tricks, but it seems to me that the Ardour developers should have allowed a period of time (24 hours?) to re-intent and successfully end the download process.

MACUPDATE ADMIN  I doubt it, but the place to check would be the developer's site, of course.

ARVIDTP  no. Ardour actually uses jack as its audio engine - not just as another core audio interface. Ardour wil not work without jack. On linux Jack is more than just a way to send audio around - it also is an audio engine and a way to send timecode around to sync applications simialr to rewire. Its just that there are not many mac apps that support jack natively. PD is one I can think of that can.

BUZZ  This has come a long way - a whole host of fixes. Remember it's sttill Beta. And you need to download and install 'Jack' for OS X first. Then install Ardour. Make sure 'Jack' is running then launch Ardour. Look forward to more enhancements and fixes - we need stuff like this on a Mac.

ANDREW  got it working. the cross-fade has some real interesting aspects. also, the time stretch is cool. still waiting to see if it can handle real multi-track editing (i.e. 16 to 32 channel in one 3 minute piece with lots of editing per track.... garage band sucks for this, tho, they wouldn't let you know... i am talking on 867 that is...)

one question: anyone know how to get it to read LADSPA plug-ins (btw, it won't work with VST plug-ins... you know what happened with Audacity and Steinberg!)? I downloaded LADSPA plug-in package vis-a-vis Fink and though Fink deposited them nicely in /SW/Lib/Ladspa Ardour is not looking there...???!!! ...

Anyone have any ideas on how to get Ardour to see them?

Thanks, Andrew

ARVIDTP  dont know, but the ardour supplies some packages of plugins that they compiled themselves - these installers should put the plugins in a place where Ardour will look for them. Also I think Audiounit support is in the cards for future development.

NICOLA PANDINI  iBook G4 933 with mac OS 10.3.8

I installed in order X11, Jack 0.6 and

Ardour beta 0.9.

Ardour works well, I tried to record some

short tracks and apply pan and volume automations and only one time the application was killed.

For a beta version is enough.
