DESCRIPTION
Pinki is a menu bar item that creates permanent Mac OS X icon thumbnails for image files based on their image content. For example, if you download the images "34-234.jpg", "563-641.jpg", and "moose.png" using your web browser, and the file icons are generic "JPEG" and "PNG" icons, you have three choices if you wish them to have custom thumbnail icons:
- One at a time, open each image in Preview, use the 'File->Copy' menu, close the image, Get Info on the file in the Finder, highlight its icon in the info box, and use the 'File->Paste' menu.
- Navigate in a Finder window to the folder where the image file is located, select the 'View -> View Options' menu, then click the box labled 'Show Icon Preview'. (The downfall to this is that each time you open the folder your computer will have to re-read the files and assign custom icons to them, which can take a lot of processor power and memory and can slow even new machines down quite a bit. In addition, when you use the "Show Icon Preview" option, the custom thumbnail icon data isn't actually saved inside of the image file itself - if you were to move the file to a different folder or copy it to a different computer the custom thumbnail will disappear.
- Simply select (highlight) the three files all at once in the Finder, and select "Create Thumbnail(s)" from the Pinki menu item. Or to make it even simpler, just hit Command-Shift-T on your keyboard after selecting the files.
Pinki can also remove custom thumbnails (restoring icons to their generic state) as well as save thumbnails as separate .icns files. Pinki supports all major image formats including jpeg, png, tiff, gif, psd, pdf and bmp.

ZANGIEF Amazing. It barely uses any CPU, definitely a big bonus. Unlike CocoThumb, there isn't one of those little reflections under everything, either. This is THE best in its class by far. Users who have folders filled with PNG or non-thumbnailed icons (like me, which is why I got Pinki) will definitely appreciate this little app.

ERRORR I found out how to turn off cocothumb's reflection by clicking on the (+) button... (not very clear UI!) I find Pinki not very intuitive, it launches as a menubar item without a window (perhaps that's a feature). I am going to stick with Cocothumb for the time being.

YOXI The one thing that's missing for me to make this app really useful: if therer's a non-image in my selection (e.g. a text file or a subfolder) then the app won't process any of the image files. It would be much more useful if the message said "There are non-images in your selection" and then would go ahead and process the image files if you want it to.

HENRIKTEKNIK - I'm experiencing sudden crashes now and then. As in, silent crashes without notification. I can't replicate when, exactly it happens, but I'll report about it if I find out. - I haven't figured out how the 'Save as .ICNSÂ…' works. I select an image in Finder, then choose to save it as .icns in Pinki, but I don't get to save it as a separate .icns file. Reading the description of the program, I was under the impression that there should be a way to generate separate .icns files out of images. Would be happy if someone could give me some advice (am I missing anything?). Other than that, this looks great! I like the app, but it's a little rough around the edges perhaps.

SOLIDSNAKE The app is reminding everytime update 1.1.1 is available for download even it's 1.1.1 running and check for update disabled. Except that tiny problem, it's a good utility to work with images.

JETFIREDX Very cool indeed. Makes it so that the small icons shown while using Xfolders actually represent the image. Thanks for creating this! A couple things I would love to see (either added to this or from Apple, since it seems like it should be an option somewhere...) 1. Search inside of selected folders and convert all images. This would make batch processing a huge amount of images easier. 2. Would it be possible to hook into the finder somehow and anytime it creates a temporary icon, just save that to the file as its icon? First time you open a folder it would be slow, but then it would only have to do it for new images that don't have their own icon after that. Thanks for making this!

ANONYMOUS Never thought I'd have as much use for this app as it turns out I do! Great for making photo archives easy to browse from the Finder, as well as cleaning up low-res icons made by OS 9.

ANONYMOUS This would be a lot better if it left you with control of the finder. As it stands if you are changing say 100 icons you are basically locked out until the app has finished. Other than that its quite good.

ALEXF An app I didn't know I needed. It's especially good for images originally from OS 9 that are stuck with a 32x32 icon that looks terrible in X's Finder. Just select your files, use the pig and you'll have beautiful, modern thumbnails. It's 0.8, so I can't be too harsh. Things I'd like to see are a bit more explanation of the options, and as one reviewer said, a contextual menu option. Good work overall!
