DESCRIPTION
Wx is a specialized internet weather app for Mac OS X that downloads and processes weather information and forecasts for the United States. The software links to free XML data on the internet from the US National Weather Service, and presents it in an attractive user-friendly interface. Wx can be configured to track weather conditions, watches/warnings/advisories, live RADAR, and forecast information for 20 locations, and it can download up to 20 weather maps or images. Optional add-ons allow each user to customize Wx for their lifestyle, hobbies, and activities. Many add-ons are available, including hurricane monitoring, ski reports, marine observations, stream flow measurements, and tide tables. Wx downloads data on-demand, and can be configured to download data automatically on a periodic basis. Current weather conditions are summarized in the app's dock icon and dock menu, a floating "MiniWx" panel, and a Quartz screensaver. An optional data logging feature records weather information to text files. The WxAlert feature can sound an alarm, send e-mails or SMS text messages, or run an AppleScript when severe weather alerts are issued by the NWS. Wx can also export settings for an iPhone or iPod Touch, allowing it to use the Mobile Wx web app. Wx runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and is a universal PowerPC/Intel application.

RAINBIRD  WX is the best weather application that I have ever used on the Macintosh. The developer is very responsive to questions or problems. For example, the latest Apple JAVA update 4 broke the radar animation of the application. I reported the problem and it was fixed the very next day (WX 5.35). I highly recommend this application and everyone should keep an eye on the weather!

XENOPHILE  Think about it: an international version of a weather application requires more than a few trivial language localizations. Different weather servers, often providing data in different formats from the American servers, would need to be accessed and interpreted by Wx. Furthermore, these weather servers typically aren't set 'n' forget affairs, they are constantly updating/changing the requirements for accessing data, as exemplified by the number of second-rate weather apps that work great for a while and then lose some or all of their features because their developers don't constantly maintain them. Thus adding international weather servers represents not a one-time investment of time and effort, but a sustained increase in the maintenance work on Wx.

I'm sure the developer can add to this regarding his priorities on Wx. My suspicion is that he's got a life outside of Wx, since he'd have to register an awful lot of users to make a decent living.

AQTINC  Craig, I've written to you several times, so you know I think that Wx kicks --- and is the last word in weather apps. HOWEVER, I'm still waiting for you to make the Wx Engine window either hidden by default or hidden by preferences. It's driving me crazy to have to routinely close it.

Please hear my pleas!

WIZARD2  WX has really proven itself during our recent spell of severe weather here in Texas.

The NWS website is cumbersome to use and navigate.

WX's attractive uncluttered design, and the ability to track weather for selected destinations is superb.

The developer is responsive and has an excellent vision for what a weather app should be -- thanks

for the superb work, and reasonable price.

CRAIG HUNTER  I have gotten many requests for an international version, and am looking in to it -- right now I am tied directly into the NWS XML feed, which only covers the US, unfortunately. There are other data sources that allow international coverage, and I am evaluating them for inclusion in Wx. Thanks for the feedback.

JACK VAN SOEST  A pity the program only works with American weather stations. So not a choice for "the rest of the world".

CRAIG  Wx 2.01 was released on 4/20 and provides workarounds for the 10.3.9 issues. The fix was implemented soon after 10.3.9 arrived, but needed testing before release. The warning about 10.3.9 was just intended to let people know that Wx 2.0 was affected by the same WebKit and Javascript issues affecting Safari and many other apps that use the WebKit framework.

Note that you can customize the weather maps and images -- just specify a URL of your choice for each of the five map slots.

More "Tracks" will be added in a future version of Wx.

ANONYMOUS  Kind of a nice little weather tracking app. Price in line with at least one other program like it, although there are free ones out there also. Would like to see some control over the background like color and tranparency. Only being limited to three cities is also a little confining. Also the explanation regarding 10.3.9 lacks a commitment to fixing and instead seems to blame Apple, though this may indeed be true. All in all a nice start.

CUSH  Note that the developer has released 2.0.1 today-so much for his alleged "lack of committment". By the way, why shouldn't Apple be blamed for the problems of OS 10.4?-it's their software. This latest OS X release has lots of problems.
