MEMORYHOLE This is definitely one of the greatest games I've ever played. I'm not much of a gamer—the last time I got hooked by a near-first-person game was Lara Croft, but this game sucked me in very quickly. I only downloaded it out of curiosity, but I got going so quickly, that it quickly became one of my favorites. I've had a copy of the demo for a long time now, hemming and hawing about whether to buy it. The thing is, I keep playing the demo -- even playing the same few levels over and over again is terrific. The graphics are very smooth, and the punches/kicks/big falls are both amazing to watch and extremely satisfying (there's nothing quite like kicking one opponent up into the air and blasting him into another opponent with a mighty punch). Some people complain that the models are overly simple, but I rather like that: it makes the game feel very pure and un-ornamented. The sound-effects are very similar, simple but very functional and not only don't get in the way but add in an important and useful way to the game. Make no mistake, the major selling point of this game is that it is fun to play. VERY fun to play. The gameplay is very easy to start and the controls are quickly learned, but at the same time the game lavishly rewards skill and practice. The combat system is both complex and simple to do: I can't speak more highly of it. With four keys and a mouse-button, plus directional keys, you can do even the most complex or impressive moves with a one or two carefully-timed keypresses. I look forward to sinking MUCH more time into this game. (Version 1.0.6) |
