DESCRIPTION
Sophos Anti-Virus protects network, desktop and remote laptop computers from the latest viruses, Trojans, worms and malicious spyware. Protecting the desktop means that regardless of how a virus attempts to break in it can be stopped. Sophos's on-access scanner provides constant real-time protection with minimal system overhead.

Network servers can also be protected with scheduled or constant real-time scanning, ensuring there is no opportunity for a virus to spread or damage your organization’s data.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 7.0.5:
  • The user interface has been reorganized. Sophos Anti-Virus preferences have been moved from System Preferences to a new window, which can be opened from the Sophos Anti-Virus application menu. The new window also includes preferences for the default scan of this Mac and Finder item scans, which were previously accessed by clicking Configure Scan in the main Sophos Anti-Virus window. The Help has been updated to reflect this change.
  • The changes to preferences include changes to logging. On-access scanning and updating activity is now logged in a single file. For more information, see Additional information.
As a result of the changes to preferences, the following problem is fixed:
  • (DEF 29391) On Mac OS X versions 10.4 and 10.5 on Power PC and version 10.5 on Intel, if you install Sophos Anti-Virus while System Preferences is open, you cannot access the Sophos Anti-Virus preferences. To workaround this, you must re-install Sophos Anti-Virus.
  • (DEF 47624) This version includes a fix for a problem with the Remote Management System and AutoUpdate. Previously, these components were unable to start on any Mac with a G3 processor. When you specify the server from which Sophos Anti-Virus will be updated, you can now use an account with a blank password. You might want to do this if you are using a guest account. The threat detection engine and threat data have been updated.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

FORMICA  I tried the latest version of this, and I felt like I was back on a Windows 98 machine! There's nothing Mac-ish about this (cr)app at all.

Like the rest of you, I HATED Norton AntiVirus for years, but they've finally (v. 11) figured out how to make it work without sucking down resources in the background all the time. Of course, if you just copied at 4 GB movie to your HD it's going to be slightly noticeable while it checks it out, but it does so fast now and leaves plenty of resources for the other kids to play with. And it's a lot Macier than Sophos.

JOHN_ALLEN  Where do I go to buy a single copy of Sophos antivirus? They don't sell it on their website.

I searched MacMall / Maczone.com and couldn't find it.

Why do they make it so hard to puchase? Is it for businesses only and not for sale to individuals?

If you have a link you could post where I can buy a copy of it online, please do so.

PIRX  I agree that SOPHOS is the very best anti-virus software on the planet, however, since their Singapore and China offices in charge of my business are totally unresponsive to multiple requests for purchasing the software, individually and for my company, I bought a different solution.

Corporate arrogance is the beginning of the end.

[AN.DY]  virex is still crap...! norton-av is a pure kernelpanic-app... intego's av solution is very fast... but useless, it only knows mac viruses... so, it's useless. clam-av is nice but it takes a day to scan 10GB! i use sophos anti-virus since 1½years . ...no crashes, no kernelpanics! Test it!

WEBMOTIVA  Stop the virus marketing. Mac users are not stupid.

There are companies building the "alert" status to create a new market. Awake people.

LUKE GOLLER  Have it deployed across a mixed network enviroment. Works well, stopped Sober getting to us today.

The On-Access scanner I find to be a general resource hog on most machines.

It also has problems with long alpha-numeric filenames and seems to just end up skipping those files.

When doing a manual scan on one of our Dual 2Ghz G5's and another G5 it just crashes half way through.

Also I've setup all the computers and am managing them from a Win2003 Enterprise Console, except for my xServe G5 running Server 10.4.3

It's appears in the console greyed out and can't be managed - which kinda sucks! anyone had this problem and fixed it? I've tried Sophos.com which is pretty useless ( in fact they refer to the xServe as an Xserver - LOL! + the local reseller seem clueless! )

JONBOY  Yup, I have!

At my last company we had it running on 30 or so pc's and 24 macs. It worked very well, stopped every virus attack and we spent 3 years with no downtime due to viri.

MACMEND  I know all that "macs have no viruses" stuff but we can pass them on to others! So has any one ever used this on a mac or mac network and can comment?
