EDITOR NOTES
If the downloaded file has a .bz2 suffix, you must remove that suffix and then the .dmg will mount properly
DESCRIPTION
MacLampsX brings light strings to your desktop.
Inspired by Tiger Technologies's Holiday Lights, MacLampsX allows you to decorate for Christmas, or any other holiday with user-creatable bulbs, as well as a small set of defaults.
Version 2.0 brings lots of new features like the ability to add bigger bulbs and to play music.
Happy Holidays!
WHAT'S NEW
Version 2.0:
- Added a welcome dialog
- Added a screensaver, along with screensaver mode in MacLampsX
- Added a basic music player
- Added random flashing mode
- Added support for multiple displays
- Sides/corners of the screen can now be configured to be empty
- Changed data handling for bulbs to reduce memory usage
- Bulbs can now be dragged from the list, even in detail mode
- The bulb list is now sorted alphabetically (as opposed to randomly)
- Fixed a bug which caused opacity preferences to be ignored
- MacLampsX now stops animation calls when you switch to another user account
- Reorganized preferences to give more flexibility and control
- Bulbs can now have a custom "preview image" that they draw in the list - useful for spacer bulbs, or bulbs bigger than 32x32
- Bulbs now support irregular dimensions and more than two states
- Began preparation for localization. Many English strings are now localizable, though there is still a lot left to do
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

ADRIENNE_AM Hi, I have had this recommended to me, but every time I download it, I'm unable to mount the dmg file. I get a warning saying that the disk image failed to mount. I have tried downloading from here and the developer's original site. I am using OS X 4.11 on my PowerPC iBook G4.

THE ARCTICMAC For all those who've had issues with the download, I've decided to change to a zlib compressed disk image, which shouldn't cause any problems for anyone. Note that the download URL is the same as always, so you may need to clear your browser cache to get the new file. Also, for future reference, it's good to know that tip that the admins posted - just remove the .bz2 file extension and open the d/l file directly as a dmg. (Version 2.0)

DOUGSTER I am having the same problem as Creepster in trying to open the .dmg.bzf file.Very strange. Also, the previous versions of MacLamps .dmg files will no longer open on my Intel iMac, using Leopard 10.5.1. (Version 2.0)

THE ARCTICMAC Hey - see the post on the main page about the problem with the latest version. If you're still having trouble with the older versions, could you get in touch with me via email (use the form on my website - I don't want to post my email here and get spammed any more than I already am) so that we can troubleshoot? Thanks! (Version 2.0)

CREEPSTER I am using 10.4.11 on an Intel iMac. The file DL's as maclampsx.dmg.bz2. If I double click it and allow Apple's opener to try, it then becomes maclampsx.dmg.bz2.cpgz. If I double click that, it changes to maclampsx.dmg2.bz2. And so on and so on. If I use stuffit expander on the D/L, it opens to what appears to be a proper dmg file, but then I'll get a warning that says "The following disk images failed to mount" Reason - no mountable file systems. I have never seen this type of behavior before. (Version 2.0)

THE ARCTICMAC A couple things about the new release. First off, it seriously is 10.4 or higher only. I'm so sure of this (like, really really sure) that I even used a format for the disk image that's specific to 10.4 and higher. I'd like to maybe do a 10.3.9 release sometime in the future, but it has to wait until I get access to my PPC box, which won't be until at least June. Furthermore, for the user who requests more bulb packs - I'm an engineer and a software developer, not an artist. Once and a while I get inspired to draw bulbs, but not very often. I've got some stuff in the pipeline to help folks out creating bulbs, and I'm hosting bulb files on my site so they're easier to find, but I'm not going to be able to do most of the artwork. I'd love it if you'd be willing to contribute. Really. (Version 2.0)

CREEPSTER It is just me, or is there something wrong with the file that gets D/L'd. It doesn't open or anything. Even from the developer's site. (Version 2.0)

ZANGIEF I've always liked this app. Now… The developer needs to include fiesta bulbs– chiles, salsa, chips, maracas, etc. This could be something totally great if it worked for every single holiday and the days in between! I want to see huge packs of bulbs for this. (Version 2.0)
