DESCRIPTION
Disctop Pro... We made Disctop to bring a bit of fun in working with your brand new iMac G5, although it can be of use as well, and not only for owners of an iMac. Normally when you insert a CD in your Mac it disappears, but where does it go? They simply pop up on your desktop! After installing Disctop, your inserted CD or DVD slides in from the side and neatly fades back into your desktop picture. Now you always know if there's a disc inside, and what type it is. Of course there are plenty of things to tweak and make Disctop fit your Mac perfectly.

VITALY  although the new version is 2.5.2, it still shows as 2.5 in about tab and tries to install a newer version when checking for updates

ALEXANDER GRIEKSPOOR  Version 2.5.2 is a minor update of Disctop, therefore the version in the about panel still displays 2.5. Disctop now also no longer tells you there is a new version available after installing this latest update. Thanks for letting us know! Enjoy!

CARL SOBOLEWSKI  Great idea, but it takes about 5 seconds to show the picture after inserting a disc, and does not remove the picture after ejecting, even if I choose Eject from the Disctop menu.

    Using iMac G5 17" 1.8Ghz, 1.5Gig RAM.

ANONYMOUS  Great program, does just what it says... the cd art has been accurate about 9/10 times, which is pretty good i suppose. Never really listened to cds on my mac before but i like knowing what in there, great program.

Question: is it taking up memory and cpu when there is no cd in the drive??

MEKENTOSJ  "Question: is it taking up memory and cpu when there is no cd in the drive?"

Yes, and no. Right now there's a CD in my drive and top indicates that the Disctop_Daemon takes up 0.0% processor time. So processor time is only used during CD insert/eject and cover lookup. Of course Disctop takes up memory, but thanks to the wonderful memory management in MacOSX, this memory is written to disk if the application is not actively used (i.a.w. soon after you have inserted/ejected a CD). So even WITH a CD in your drive it doesn't take up active memory resources and can't have any negative effect on system performance...

DARTH BROOKS  I purposely didn't read the instructions in order to test how intuitive Desktop Pro would be... it connected to Amazon and Eva Cassidy's 'Time After Time' sits on my desktop. Hmm, what's that little transport thingy? Sure enough, it launched iTunes and started playing the disc. Would I pay for this toy? Probably not. Is it useful? Can't say, but I know simple elegance and sheer fun when I see it.

    Thanks, Mek, five stars.

ANONYMOUS  For the Mac mini (and other 'headless' Macs), you really need to be able to put the image wherever your mini is relative to the screen. How about CMD-dragging the CD image to any side or corner?

MEKENTOSJ  Note to (stupid, we agree) version numbering, it looks like there's a new version of Disctop Pro (2.0), while in fact Disctop Pro has been version 2.0 from the beginning. For those already having installed Disctop PRO, you have the latest version already.

MEK  Note: Disctop only works in machines containing an optical drive that is capable of writing CDs and/or DVDs, as it depends on the disk recording framework. Unfortunately that means that on machines having a CD-rom drive only, like a Pismo PowerBook, Disctop will not work. We will try to fix this in an upcoming update.

FRANCKY  Haaaa I was wondering why it wouldn't work on my Pismo... Well anyway, i think this is a very nice idea and you seem to put a lot of work and efforts in it.

Also the interface is really polished.

    Thank you for it all.
