DESCRIPTION

FileWrangler's speed is back to the gold old days; 2.5 GB of data, composed of 11,000 files nested 8 subfolders deep can be renamed in under 30 seconds on a PowerBook.

Select a folder, filter its contents, recurse its folder structure, choose your naming scheme and click the "Rename Files" button. Dozens, or hundreds or thousands of files are quickly renamed to meet your criteria. Many thanks to the thousands of people who have downloaded and used FileWrangler. It's your interest and feedback that have kept the project going.

The important new feature of version 1.2 is user-definable configuration sets. You can customize the interface as you see fit and save those interface settings as a set, to be called upon again and again. You can also choose one of your custom sets to be the default set upon program launch.

Additionally, FileWrangler now features full preferences, allowing you to tweak things like how the numbering handles subfolders, what constitutes a character violation, and even the color of violation highlighting. FileWrangler 1.2 is all about customization and making the program your own. Download includes robust PDF manual.

    BDELMAN  This software was easy to use and very fast. It renames 3000 files in about 4 seconds. Unly kudos!

    JONATHAN ARMENTA  Saved my arse. I needed to process about 900 images and during my upgrade to OSX I failed to get a newer version of zinorename which always crashed. I found this easier to use interface and quicker results. Thank you very much.

    CHRISTOPHER DRUM  Regarding FileWrangler speed....

    Here are some time tests I just ran. Given a folder with two subfolders, themselves with two subfolders each, and a total file quantity of 50 files (some of which are RTFD documents), renaming was near instantaneous. By duplicating files and subfolders, I created a folder with six subfolders, themselves with four to six subfolders each, and a total quantity of almost 1,000 files. Renaming of all documents took about 10-15 seconds. Further reduplication of all files and subfolders, creating a complex folder heirarchy and a total of 5,000 files took 1 minute 50 seconds to rename all files.

    These tests were run on a PowerBook G4 running 10.4.1 at 1.5GHz and 2GB of RAM. Your mileage may vary. I don't know if these speeds are slower than expected; they seem fairly snappy to me (especially given how long it would take to do manually). Perhaps the current lack of a progress indicator makes FileWrangler feel slower than it really is?

    CHRISTOPHER DRUM  In my testing, I have always found FileWrangler to be quite speedy in its renaming. If it was slow, I certainly would not have released it. But, perhaps I overlooked something during testing. Maybe there is some quality to your files or your file names that makes FileWrangler choke.

    If you could email me with some specifics about what you're doing (OS version, number of files getting renamed, number of nested subfolders, some sample original names, how long it is taking to rename the files, etc...), perhaps I can track down what's going on.

    JOHN KERSHAW  Excellent addition to any file-munging toolbox. I'd like to see the ability to add multiple prefix/suffixes, and regex replace.

    I downloaded this app because R-name doesn't do parent folder stuff. The files I wanted to rename were:

    photos/1/1.jpg -> photos/1_1.jpg

    photos/1/2.jpg -> photos/1_2.jpg etc

    so I needed to prefix with parent folder and an underscore. In the end I put an '_' into the delimiter field, but when there are so many options for prefix/suffix it'd be nice to be able to select more than one.

    MARK MASON  FileWrangler has an extensive, and impressive, feature set. I had been using Renamer4Mac, too. If it has crashed on you, it's always good practice to inform the developer, as I did. I have been looking to find a fast way to rename files that contain invalid characters under SMB. I am now backing up to an SMB server which has forced me to rename my documents for that purpose. FileWrangler seems ideally suited for renaming batches of images from digital cameras, and has a UNIX file name violation filter, but not one for SMB filtering. Great app. though.

    ANONYMOUS  FileWrangler is useful if you want to rename files, but I can't find a way of renaming folders or symbolic links

    ME  Have started using this to rename MANY medical images taken for teaching, etc. Very complete program and fast. Can't find any glitches yet.

    I think it may be more complete and easier than Renamer4Mac, which I've been using: it has crashed some, but usually is fine. That's why I searched for a more stable product: I think this is it. Will followup in weeks.
