DESCRIPTION
Delicious Library allows you to import, browse, and share all your books, movies, music and video games with Delicious Library.

Run your very own library from your home or office using our impossibly simple interface. Delicious Library's digital shelves act as a visual card-catalog of your books, movies, music and video games.

A scan of a barcode is all Delicious Library needs to add an item to your digital shelves, downloading tons of info from the internet like the author, release date, current value, description, and even a high-resolution picture of the cover. Import your entire library using our exclusive full-speed iSight video barcode scanner, our Flic Wireless Laser Bar Code Scanner, or (the slow way) entering the titles by hand. Once you have all of your items in your Mac, you can browse though your digital shelves, check stuff out to friends using Apple's built-in Address Book and calendar, and find new items to read, watch, and play using Library's recommendations.

Quickly importing your stuff into Delicious Library doesn't require a dedicated barcode scanner - you can use any QuickTime-supported digital video camera, like your Apple iSight. Just hold the barcode on the back of any book, movie, CD, or video game in front of the camera and your item magically shows up on your digital shelf seconds later. Using the same technology found in $800 industrial-strength CCD barcode scanners, Delicious Library reads every single frame of digital video; seeking out, targeting, and instantly decoding any visible barcodes. This results in a seamless process of scanning that lets you import about 750 items an hour (assuming you can move your arms that fast). At that rate the staff of the new downtown Seattle Central Library could work together to import all of their 1.4 million books into Delicious Library in just over 5 hours.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 2.3:
  • Fixes for Snow Leopard
  • The long-delayed Help files are finally here!
  • Publishing
  • Cover view graphics are zippier thanks to some tricks from the author of CoreAnimation.
  • Selecting very large shelves is faster.
  • Loading and using a file where you have a friend (or multiple friends) who is no longer in your Address Book is now MUCH faster.
  • iSight Scanning Items
  • Bluetooth Scanners
  • Manual Item Lookup
  • Because sqlite files can sometimes become corrupted when a Mac is suddenly shut down or crashes, I've written a utility to repair corrupted files.
  • Details
  • Interface
  • We now correctly re-launch Delicious Library 2 after we upgrade and/or move Delicious Library 2 automatically to the /Applications folder
  • Fix a missing term in the localization that caused exceptions for Swedes when adding shelves.
  • Feedback Panel
  • Read the complete release notes here.

MAC007  Well unfortunately this version won't even launch without crashing right away. I've been to the developers website and posted a report there and have found this is not an isolated problem plus they have only 3 employees. If you're having problems be patient as they're doing the best they can. Sure hope they can get this bug fixed as for now this app is useless to me.

LLONGLEY  I've owned this program for a while and a few years ago I really liked it. A few days ago I decided to organize all my DVD's and divide them putting some in storage boxes and some ripped. The long and short of this is that I spent 2.5 days scanning in @700 DVD's with not a lot of trouble. This program has so much potential!

Once everything was scanned in I set out to further organize my info to be sure I can find things when I want them. However, since the scanning is complete each time I open the program I either get this message (Here is my debugging information. Please report this part to :

Object [0x1f2c73c0 ] from table "Medium" has problem "userSynopsis is not valid. (1550)" with key "userSynopsis")... or I get a lame message about the program being confused and prompting me to close the program and restart (which does nothing as within a few minutes the same thing again. I am running OS 10.6 but still, all this work and it really feels as if I am going to loose everything because the program is really unstable with my data in it. I am (as I type) moving the data over to Bento as I no longer trust this software. I was really disappointed to find no real assistance at the developers web site either. I really would like this software if it was more stable. I am not having any other software issues at this time. I have sent the reports to the developers as they have appear on my system and got a thank you for my submissions but thats it.

ZX  Clearly the developer got no clue in coding! Buggy, dead under 10.6...Didn't change much since 2005.

The iPhone-application the developers are promising is REMOVED from the appstore.

(And no single word about this question yet on their website!)

I bought this app to have the possibility to take my cd/dvd collection with me on the iPhone while shopping, but I just discovered that I can totally forget about this.

Really, really disappointed..!

(PS: this could really be interesting software if you only use it at your home computer, but with this big miss I'm afraid I just cannot give a good rating.)

PLISTOFF  It is a well publicized situation that Amazon decided to "pull the plug" on Delicious Library for the iPhone (and services for other mobile devices). This is not Delicious Monster's fault - it is Amazon's. Maybe you should stay abreast of the issues before making comments.

This is a great piece of software (and a seminal app that formed much of the design ethos that pervades Mac culture today.) Great work, Wil and Co. 8^)

ONEBLESSEDGUY  Where can I find this information? I would like to complain to Amazon about doing this. Is there a forum I can go to?

Thanks,

BEEP BEEP, BEEP BEEP... YEAH!  'well publicized'... yes I indeed discovered this AFTER buying/using this software and encountering this issue. But if you're new to this kind of software, you can't always know exactly where to check to see if there are any issues with this. That's why this issue should also (especially) have been publicized on the website of Delicious Library itself. Indeed the makers can't do anything about this decision of amazon, but they CAN keep the info up-to-date on their site, so no confusion can happen.

In the meanwhile I've had a very friendly mail of the developers with a confirmation they've updated this info.

With this correct info I'd give Delicious Library 5 stars.

PLISTOFF  @ONEBLESSEDGUY:

I'm not sure about where to complain to at Amazon.

@Et al:

Here's a link or three…

http://www.tuaw.com/2009/07/07/delicious-library-for-iphone-runs-afoul-of-amazons-api-terms-p/

http://www.macworld.com/article/142162/2009/08/deliciouslibrary.html

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=amazon+"delicious+library"

This is definitely bad behavior on the part of Bezos and Co.

SJK  Delicious Monster have been noticeably less communicative with its customers than Bruji has been with theirs (on its forum and in http://bruji.com/articles/ posts) about the Amazon fiasco effecting respective products.

HEEPFAN  Nice program but don't expect to be able to import in your existing data if you don't have the ASIN. Useless to me without lookup from UPC on import. Import is overall just half-baked but other than that I like the program. If you don't have a large library or no need to bring in your old data this is a winner.

RDWILLIAMS  Barcode scanning with iSight works *much* better in 2.1.

Probably needs a 2.1.2 for stability reasons.

Cheers,

SERGESOUSZERO  I have to disagree with the comments about the bad support. I had a probem yesterday and sent a email to the developper. One hour later, I got a reply from him that helped me fix the problem. I would rather say that he is very responsive.

DONPERREAULT  Delicious Library started as the most innovative and beautiful app of its kind and still remains the best. With the addition of the FREE iPhone app, I couldn't be happier.
