DESCRIPTION
FontDoc is a dead simple program which shows you all of the fonts on your system using any text and any size you choose. Finally, no more squinting at microscopic WYSIWYG font menus or having to click on a font to see what it looks like.
FontDoc simply spits out a Rich Text document containing samples of all your fonts. Save it or print it for future reference. I'm hoping for big time-savings when I have to pick the perfect typeface for the titles in my next iMovie.
I [the developer] am also really hoping FontDoc will be rendered obsolete by something in a future version of Font Book. But until then, it's yours, dear denizens of Macdom.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.2.1:
- Fixes bug where printing in Leopard would only produce one page of output
- Fixes bug where no fonts would appear in Jaguar
- Corrupt fonts may cause crashes. Please don't use them.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.2 or later.

BAMSE1 I much appreciate this application. It is free, a gift to the Mac community. It displays not only installed fonts (well enough, imho) but fonts not installed as well! - given my needs the feature I value the most. It has also been stable, as yet (still running 10.3.9 here...). Side thought on stability: FontDoctor (or other font managers with such built-in features) may be of help to detect and even repair fonts which could cause FontDoc (and perhaps any application using fonts) to behave unstable. While this application certainly could improve, or rather evolve, if it would not I still consider it a gem which I will continue to rely on until its best features comes with Apple's Font Book, or any other related application which I will probably need anyway, for activating/deactivating fonts, etc... To the Developer: Thank you! (Version 1.2.1)

DRDUL A nice little app that does what I want (it shows me what fonts look like) and nothing more. It runs fine on my MacBook Pro with OS X 10.5.6. I haven't encountered the problems which Grid Splicer reports below. (Version 1.2.1)

GRID SPLICER The idea for this app is great. However, I stumbled upon three drawbacks. One is the fact that when you have "Show all typefaces within fonts" disabled, it frequently chooses just the font I don't want to see. E.g. small caps when I just want to see the regular or book version of the font. Two is a major bug: when I let FontDoc display all the fonts in one folder (in my case 371) with the "Show all typefaces within fonts" enabled, it crashes. When I divide the folder in pieces in order to reduce the number of fonts, it still crashes. Three is another major bug. When I let FontDoc display the contents of the same folder mentioned above, but with the "Show all fonts..." disabled, it seems to work, but then from the fonts starting with P onward, it keeps repeating the same font until the end, even though it lists all the font names correctly. When I open the individual font files, it works, so there is nothing wrong with those. There is something wrong with FontDoc! (Version 1.2)

ALLEN SMITH As I mentioned to the previous poster, it's impossible to debug problems with something as tricky as fonts without more information. I strongly recommend that anyone having issues contact me (the author) directly. (Version 1.2)

ALJUK This is without doubt the most unstable app I've ever used, which is a shame, as the premis is great. The one time in 20 that it doesn't crash it works well and is very useful, but the other 19 times when it does crash render it unuseable. It doesn't seem to crash at anything specific - I'll try to open a folder of fonts and it'll crash. I keep trying, and, 5 minutes of effort later, maybe it'll open them. Then it'll sit there for another few minutes "updating", before finally, maybe, displaying some fonts. More agonising than pulling one's own teeth, frankly, and in need of some proper development. ALLEN SMITH I sorry you're having trouble. Obviously I'm not, or I wouldn't have released it. If you contact me, I would be more than happy to try and figure out what is causing your issues. (Version 1.2)

JENOVA1 Ok turns out that characters palette problem was bound to occur with or without FontDoc. Still would love to know why all my fonts aren't displayed in FontDoc though. (Version 1.1.3)

JENOVA1 This App looks good and sounds good and i've been hoping to find something like it for a while now. Unfortunately it's not as smart as it seems. Where is it reading these fonts from? They don't match up with the hundreds of fonts listed in my extensis suitcase fonts! Does it select only certain fonts? How come only two fonts are shown when I select recently used fonts? Two fonts that I actually haven't recently used! On top of that, I searched through the menus and opened the special characters window under the edit menu...BAD IDEA! The window wouldn't close! Then I restarted and everytime any window would open or be selected the special characters window would flash open and then quickly close! Amazing how FontDoc screwed up my system! I hope the developer has a fix for this cause this is bad...very bad. (Version 1.1.3)

DINH Very handy application! I really really really would like to see a favorites option so I can pick off ones that I like so I can narrow the list of choices.. Perhaps just another list box to the side where I can drag stuff over? I guess it may not work that easily as its a RTF, but perhaps something similar can be done? Perhaps opening up the source? EVERYDAY SOFTWARE I was just thinking about how handy an app exactly like this would be while I was tediously selecting font after font in Photoshop. After a quick search I found FontDoc. I love the ability to set the preview text to get exactly the look I'm going for. Great little app! (Version 1.1.3)

TIM This is a must have for graphic designers. In other apps, like Apple's Fontbook or FontAgent, you need to cycle through different fonts. In FontDoc you are able to view your text in different fonts right next to each other to see how it looks. What a great little app, and fairly quick even when loading several hundred fonts. Cheers to the author! (Version 1.1.2)
