DESCRIPTION
JackOSX (the Jack Audio Connection Kit for OS X) is a low-latency audio server, written originally for the GNU/Linux operating system, and now with Mac OS X support. It can connect any number of different applications to a single hardware audio device; it also allows applications to send and receive audio to and from each other.
Jack is different from other audio server efforts in that it has been designed from the ground up to be suitable for professional audio work. This means that it focuses on two key areas: synchronous execution of all clients, and low latency operation.
Jack OS X includes:
The Jack server
-
The infrastructure you need in place to use Jack
The Jack Audio Router (JAR)
-
JAR is a CoreAudio 'user space' driver that allows any OS X CoreAudio application to become a Jack client.
The Jack audio plugins
-
Both AU and VST “Jack-aware audio plugins are provided, which can further expand the limitless audio routing possibilities when using Jack.
The JackPilot application
-
JackPilot offers an easy to use GUI interface that allows you to control the Jack server, and manage the audio connections between applications and/or plugins.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 0.82: - addresses a “deadlock” issue that appeared on some machines.
- increases the maximum number of Jack ports to 1024 (from 512).
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.3 or later.

NAOH Just a quick note about version 0.81 of JackOSX. It seems to have a bug which causes coreaudiod to constantly eat up about 30% of the CPU capacity of my MacBook Pro even when Jack isn't running. The behaviour disappeared as soon as I uninstalled JackOSX. If you are experiencing this particular issue, it may be worth while rolling back to JackOSX 0.80, as that version didn't exhibit this behaviour on my system. I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.6 on a 2.6GHz MacBook Pro Core2Duo. (Version 0.81)

SLETZ Can you *please* report this problem on JackOSX group : http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jackosx/ ? Bugs do not solve by the the "power of god" only... ((-: (Version 0.81)

BILL CLINTON This is an amazing utility for connecting audio applications. I can't believe that it exists at all, let alone that it's free. (Version 0.81)

ANONYMOUS Great software, but two quibbles: NetJack settings aren't saved as part of the studio setup, and the router isn't exactly the most intuitive interface ever (its too easy to accidentally double-click a port and create an unwanted routing). Otherwise, an indispensable tool, especially if you have two or more computers (and don't want to use GarageBand or Logic). (Version 0.71)

ERIC HSU Can't help but commenting, there are definitely different 'sizes' of infinities; googling 'countable uncountable' will probably get you to the right directions. There are also sets that are the same 'size' infinity, but in another practical sense, different sizes. For instance, you might have an algorithm that works for all integer multiples of one million (a countably infinite number) and another one that works for all integers (same countable infinity). Still, the latter set contains the previous set and in that sense does 'expand' the number of items... (Version 0.71)

YOXI And I can't help but add that from a buddhist perspective, at least, 'integer' and 'infinite' are just mutually augmentative concepts - we have this idea of 'separate things' and of a 'finite or infinite number of them', but they're just conventions for describing an experience - language is just a modelling tool, and a model is just a better or worse attempt to describe experience. Anyway, you could say that adding enhancements expands the *realised* number of limitless possibilities for this app if you want to stay picky ;) (Version 0.74)

FUNNELLPD Powerful and free. I use Jack OS X in conjunction with Amadeus II to rip audio from applications for which it would normally be impossible to record, such as RealPlayer, the Finder, etc. (Version 0.51)

ANONYMOUS Nothing is unrecordable: Ambrosia's WireTap will rip anything that plays on your Mac, and there's no need to go through a secondary app like Jack. (Version 0.71)

IONYZ Wiretap—the freeware version—hasn't been updated in over two years. And while others have had success getting it to work on Tiger I haven't. (Version 0.73)

ANONYMOUS From the above description: "Both AU and VST “Jack-aware” audio plugins are provided, which can further expand the limitless audio routing possibilities when using Jack." If there are endless possibilities, then the number of possibilities is, of course, infinate. Adding any number of additional possibilities would still result in infinity, since you can not add any number to infinity and get a number greater than infinity. Therefore, it is impossible for the AU & VST plugins to actually expand the possabilities, if they are truly limitless to begin with. (Since there are a finite number of siftware applications written for OS X it is also impossible to have an infinate number of possibilities, but we'll ignore that). That said, this sounds like a really great app & I look forward to trying it out. :-) The Math Fairy (Version 0.51)

ANONYMOUS I remember reading somewhere a way of proving how some infinite values were larger than other infinite values. Don't ask me how -- my head exploded. (Version 0.61)
