DESCRIPTION
Growl is a notification system that allows any application to send it a notification, and then it displays it. You can (for example) be notified that you have new email, or that a download completed, etc.
Support for Applescript, Perl, Python, TCL, Cocoa, Carbon, Ruby and more being added.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.2:
Everything
- Requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later
- Much behind-the-scenes modernization, especially in our Xcode projects
- Installer packages are now Leopard-only flat packages
- Updated copyright years ([2d6a42405815], [d5c59f2bfcc3])
Growl
- Now 64-bit clean, so you no longer need to relaunch System Preferences into 32-bit mode
- Now warns when you try to install a plug-in that won't work under the current architecture, such as a 32-bit-only plug-in on a 64-bit Mac running Snow Leopard ([051a29104de7], [18f28b64e39d])
- Fixed autorelease-pool messages piling up in the Console ([1e9e11a7092f])
- Adding Growl and the menu-bar status item to your Login Items list may be more reliable now ([5c1d8f5e64c2], [b846a7b597a6])
- Now code-signed, to make updating less of a hassle for Prowl users ([323aadb577b1])
- Prefpane should no longer crash when it's missing GrowlHelperApp and GrowlMenu ([21845064880c], [0e19238de90f])
- Fixed a crash when the computer has no explicitly-set name ([88e9c44bbbdc]), ([b000509c2696]), ([82f50f3678bb])
- Fixed various leaks, most only under garbage-collection, detected by the Clang Static Analyzer ([0e9b6b0b1e25], [680abae744d7], [48b7c994f6c8], [1e66707c1402])
- Fixed various other bugs found by the Clang Static Analyzer ([8e5827d639dc], [e4bc764cf865], [e6763de09830])
- Fixed Installer package only opening System Preferences, not the Growl preference pane ([939a07eddf5e])
- Removed ability to install to the Home folder, because that's broken in current versions of Installer ([66804e7ecfe3]; Installer bug filed as #7215243)
GrowlMail
- Now 64-bit clean
- Compatible with Snow Leopard (through 10.6.1)
- Added an uninstaller, based off the one for Growl ([6e6d39bbec43])
- Changed how the Installer package installs to your Home folder, because the proper way is broken in current versions of Installer ([6328e4c4dd23]; Installer bug filed as #7215243
- Simplified how we add GrowlMail's preference pane to Mail's Preferences window ([6b117acf2fe9])
GrowlSafari
- Completely rewritten; it's an application now, using mach_inject
- Now 64-bit clean
- Works on both Leopard and Snow Leopard
- Now works with the WebKit nightly-build launcher ([24c2a3482ec3], [fc7016ea4fc2])
Growl.framework
- Now 64-bit clean
- The Carbon-based API is now deprecated; please switch to the Cocoa-based API
- Should be GC-compatible now; please report any leaks
- Now uses an open-document Apple Event, not Launch Services, to register the application with Growl, so that the user does not get yanked out of your application ([1df5769e87e1], [58720a0d2d1f], [0f739ceca8b4])
- Fixed a crash when a delegate had not yet been set ([7560cff1ec16])
- Fixed leaks of the prefpane bundle ([7560cff1ec16])
- Removed a redundant method declaration from the Cocoa GAB header ([83d7e0469e8a])
GrowlTunes
- Runs in 64-bit when possible
- No longer re-notifies every few seconds when you're listening to a Live365 stream ([5f22e70ed081])
HardwareGrowler
Uninstaller
- Should no longer ask where GrowlHelperApp and GrowlMenu are if they aren't installed ([e4b6562e6d73])
- Now a Universal Binary, so it works even if you don't have Rosetta installed ([bed9dc7f9bd5])
- Added a success message ([4dbf452eb86f])
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.5 or later.

LEO SPILL Love the app. Does an indispensable little job and does it well. It tells me if a download has been completed or what the name is of the next track I am going to be listening to. Lots of 'Growl styles' skins/themes out there... if you are willing to look. My only problem is that SafariGrowl doesn't remember my request for notice on 'download complete' and always reverts to 'compression status' in the preference pane. The feature works fine on the Laptop, just weird how on the works desktop - it can't remember my selection. (Version 1.2)

MIGUEL I got fed up of the constant notifications to update. I also hated whenever notifications got on top of media players disrupting movie experience. Yes there are ways to work around these annoyances but why? Why should the user work for growl when growl should work for the user? Is the user watching a movie fullscreen? Don't fraking bother me. Is there a new update? Download and install silently, don't bother me. This utility could have potential, but it's not there yet. (Version 1.2)

MARK EVERITT Or you could go into the settings panel and untick "Check for updates automatically". It's no win for developers sometimes. This one has obviously tried to do us all a favour by checking for updates, which I appreciate very much. You can't please everybody so they've rightly included the option to turn this off. With this utility you have to do some customisation to get it as you like anyway so is it really that much time out of your day? You could have done it in a tenth of the time it took you to write your review. (Version 1.2)

CHRISTOPHER FORSYTHE There is no way to detect a full screen movie. If there was we'd have a pref for that. But there isn't. If you're getting constant update notifications, you likely have 2 versions of Growl installed, or an old version of Growl installed. (Version 1.2)
| Jan 10 2010 |
CHRISTOPHER FORSYTHE Oh and downloading and installing silently is bad. We'd get a ton of bad feedback about that if we did it. We are looking at Sparkle though. (Version 1.2)

ARCHAEOGEEK Growl is basically a must have app, all has been said, as a notification framework, people have been trying to get the same working on the other major platforms. And one thing I feel must be said, because it's a big thank you to the devs, there's a tendency for deaf accessibility to be done with the "cause a seizure-inducing blink" school of thought, but this is basically the best accessibility tool in this situation to replace sound notifications, without exceptions. SHANE C SMITH Growl Mail no longer works in 10.6.2, I guess I'll have to wait for an update. (Version 1.2)

CHRISTOPHER FORSYTHE Or just go download the update to GrowlMail. Go to the Growl site and download the GrowlMail download. (Version 1.2)

YOGI COACH I'm a big fan of Growl, but find the Herald software more useful than GrowlMail for my purposes. It's free, well thought-out and highly configurable. And it works great with Mac OS X 10.6.2. (Version 1.2)

CASTLE ROSE Oh come on! Tiger support Droped! Why? Not every one upgrades the the latest operating system every year. Tiger is not THAT old to drop support for it. Please make v1.2.1 Tiger compatible. (Version 1.2)

LIVINGS124 If you don't keep your OS up to date, why do you need to keep your software up to date? (Version 1.2)
| Oct 26 2009 |
CASTLE ROSE @LIVINGS124: Either you missed my point or you're a smart azz. Mac OS X 10.4.x 'Tiger' was released on April 29, 2005, not so long ago. Further more, the PowerBook G4 I use for my business is not supported by Mac OS 10.6.0 'Snow Leopard'. All of my Adobe products, Quark, FTP, browsers, fonts, utilities, widgets, drivers, communication programs, ect. work great as is. I have not found a compelling reason to even update to Leopard just to get some more bells and whistles I don't need. As a small business owner i have to weigh the costs and benefits of each expense. Sadly I often I find business tend to forget the SERVICE in their customer service. Of course Growl is freeware/domationware and I greatly appreciate the work they do. I just hope if there are any bugs or security issues with the Tiger version they will continue to be patched. I could go on but i hope my point is clear now. -Thanks. (Version 1.2)

LIVINGS124 Supporting the OS for 4.5 years seems more than enough to me. 1.1 still works fine. Should they stop adding more advanced new features so that your old system that does not support this functionality can have a couple of not as interesting new abilities? If you do not want to upgrade your OS for new bells and whistles, then don't complain you can't update your open source software for more bells and whistles. (Version 1.2)

CHRISTOPHER FORSYTHE To be frank, we have 3 developers and 1 project manager working on Growl. 1 of those is a full time student. The other is a full time developer at a prestigious mac shop. The last is a full time doctor. So we have one guy who can work on Growl for maybe 5 hours a month (doctor). Another guy who can work on Growl 10 hours a week (dev) , and the last guy can do the same (student). I can work on Growl roughly 10 hours a week as well (project manager). When considering what we could and could not support, based on the fact that the Growl project is entirely volunteer supported, we had to make judgement calls. 10.4 was released over 4 years ago. No new hardware supports it. Very few of us have a box to test on, and it makes the testing process go much longer. The testing process for 1.1 itself got extended another month due to 10.4. So just on a testing basis alone did we think about dropping 10.4. Then you have to consider maintenance of code. There is a large amount of code that we were able to remove and stop maintaining once we dropped 10.4. The ability to do this made the codebase smaller, and easier to read. Finally, it is hard to work with old API's. It is unreasonable to expect unpaid volunteers to work on something they do not want to work on. Period. I've forced people to do that before when I worked as the Project Manager of Adium. We needed Group Chat support, and I basically told one guy to do it or else. He did it, then he quit the project. People stop working on things if they are forced to do something they don't want to do. Let me put it another way. Supporting 10.4 is like supporting ie 6. You can do it, but why? For a group of people with barely a lot of time, it's not worth doing it. I hope this explanation helps. By the way, livings works on another mac app. Saying "it's not that old!" is not a good argument for either of us. We both have to make judgement calls based on cold hard fact and not emotion. I simply don't have the resources to support 10.4 at the prefpane and extras level, and I'm sure the argument to livings doesn't really shine through compared to resources either. Open source projects are supposed to be fun. Threads like this make it not fun. Come up with a better argument for 10.4 support that addresses all my points and more and we'd maybe rethink it, but currently 10.4 support for the prefpane and extras is gone and won't be returning. I hope this helps you understand our reasoning.

FLOMET This applies to Snow Leopard I use Firefox as my default browser and when I installed Growl v1.2 I found that when I click on a link in mail it opens Firefox but does not focus on the window, I do not have this problem when using Safari as the dafault browser. This is just a small bug but others might have this with SL (Version 1.2)

PENGUIRL Growl just popped up an alert that there is a new version available, however I run 10.4 and the new version requires 10.5. I caught it after downloading but before installing but other's might end up having to go back and reinstall an older version. It would be nice if it checked compatibility before alerting the user to a new version, I've now disabled automatic update checking since it's not likely they'll be updating the Tiger version anymore. CHUCKK Yea, they should be more careful. But on the other hand, the installer for this version is smart enough to recognize the OS and it will not all you to install if you are running Tiger (well at least it did that on my machine). (Version 1.2)

CHRISTOPHER FORSYTHE The updater really isn't very good right now, agreed. We're currently switching to sparkle at the moment which will take care of that. Sorry about the problem, not much we can do about it at this time though. (Version 1.2)

ROGERMCILMOYLE The only way I have found to make this GrowlMail install on Leopard is to use the command line installer -pkg ./GrowlMail-Leopard.mpkg -target / Otherwise it just sat at the screen where I could click on "Just for Me" but never get the continue to enable. It worked perfect after this... (Version 1.1.6)
