FISHSCALE  many apps do this. Go into your user pref pane and delete it from the login items. If you want a better approach download tinkertool by Dr. Bresink (found here) and you can control all your login items with more options than the regular pref pane. Grab tinkertool you will not regret it, does more than you can imagine.

FALSTAFFA  Well, I tried to use 2.8.0.851 but it crashes every time it connects to Skype's servers, I have reverted to V 2.8.0.438 which has never crashed on me.

MacBook Pro 2.33 GHz C2D - 3 GB DDR2 SDRAM - Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8

Note: My rating applies to V 2.8.0.851 on Leopard ONLY. Previous versions, including betas, have been stable.

DON-B  Well, it seems that there is not much left to say about Skype. But there are things Skype team needs to take into strong consideration for their next versions:

Usability, multiple windows messy UI.

I am a heavy skype user. it has great sound quality and lets me transfer files (where adium fails...). BUT, I hate using it. Its simply takes too much of my brain CPU just to handle all the different windows it opens when you have a chat, voice and file transfer going on.

Try looking for the chat option while in voice call. It's not there. It's in another window that is way behind. Why??

Try entering a phone number to the window. Its soooo complicated!

NEIL_M  The UI could certainly be unified.

Although some of your comments seem like you haven't really looked around the interface.

When you are on a call and want to chat or send a file - there is a button called 'more' (cog symbol) next to the 'hangup'. You will find a contextual menu.

Dialing a number is really easy, in the mail window below all your contacts, you can see a grid of 9 (3x3) dark squares - that opens the dialer. You can either enter the full number including the international code and skype changes the country code prefix flag.

PEDRORS  Why is that when clicking on the "Check for update" it ALWAYS shows that NO update is available even though there are new versions?

ERIC WOEHLER  Beware of password/account hijacking!

I was using skype a few days back when a popup appeared to tell me that my pasword had been changed and that I needed to login using "my" new password. Of course I couldn't as the password/account had been hijacked. I have contacted Skype and am awaiting a response. Others with similar experiences have indicated 4-10 DAYS response times from Skype before things start happening.

Googling 'Skype password hijack' will bring up 1000s of hits, clearly indicating that this is a widespread and unaddressed issue, and a clear indication that Skype does not/can not help - once you are locked out, the process to restore your account is beyond most people's capacity to provide necessary info. You need to have details of your last credit card transaction with Skype, original email that you used to set up the acct etc etc - if you don't have these, sorry, you're out of luck.

The big concern?? Most people use credit cards or Paypal to pay for Skype credits, and once you account has been hijacked, the thieves then merrily continue to use your credit card and/or Paypal acct to pay for their Skype credits or worse.

Take home message - don't enable automatic renewal of Skype credit. Skype remembers yr credit card details by default and automatically renews your Skype credit with your credit card. The account thieves are relying on this to access your credit card details and/or your Paypal details (including bank accounts).

To guard against this, delete all your Paypal and credit card details from your Skype acct settings. It means that you will have to re-enter yr details every time you renew your Skype credit, but it means that when (not if) your acct is hacked/hijacked, your credit card and Paypal accounts won't go with your Skype acct.

Beware!

BOUSOZOKU  Not every application is going to benefit from 64-bit capabilities.

Skype isn't a huge database server, nor is it a 3D-based application and it likely doesn't need huge amounts of working memory to operate, so it would be of limited value to work in 64-bit mode.

KLAGRECA  I had a feeling that once Skype changed ownership, we were going to see some feverish development and improvement. Kudos to the dev crew, looks like your back on track to make Skype the premiere VOIP/IM app.

JDANEK  I like skype and the video/audio quality is just amazing. It is really tons better then a cell phone and almost never drops a call, but sometimes it lags the webcam but never the screenshare. You can play games and more. Best instant messaging client so far.

Five stars.
