WHAT'S NEW
Version 2.8:
  • Skype Access: An incorrect notification message appeared "This Wi‐Fi hotspot does not support Skype Access" when users tried to connect to Skype Access when Airport was set to off.
  • Chat: Text was not visible within the chat input field that contained a certain Unicode character.
  • Contacts: Platform specific ‐ Skype for Mac OXS 10.3 (Panther); Skype froze after deleting unread missed events.
  • Contacts: Mood message appeared blank after playing iTunes.
  • Contacts: Contacts were still visible in the "Manage Contact Groups" after deleting them from the Contact List.
  • Video: Video appeared blank between Skype for Windows and Skype for Mac.
  • Video: A video error message appeared at the beginning of a video call.
  • Video: Video and screen sharing functionality did not work after a multi‐ chat
  • Screen Sharing: Recipients screen remained black after screen sharing was resumed.
  • Screen Sharing: A green line appeared when screen sharing between Skype for Windows and Skype for Mac OXS 10.4 (Tiger).
  • Screen Sharing: Skype froze when screen sharing between Skype for Windows and Skype for Mac.
  • Miscellaneous: An incorrect informative message appeared when entering more than 20 characters for a password.
  • Miscellaneous: The Show in Finder option was not available after cancelling a file transfer.
  • Miscellaneous: Platform specific – OSX 10.3 (Panther); Skype could not connect to the network. Skype froze when selecting "Quit Skype".
  • Miscellaneous: The typing indicator appeared within a Multi‐chat even though no one was typing.
  • Miscellaneous: An incorrect informative message appeared when trying to call an emergency number.
  • Miscellaneous: Commas were not visible in mood messages.
  • Miscellaneous: A users name and password field appeared blank after selecting the option "Remember my name and password on this computer".
  • SMS: An error message appeared when dragging and dropping a participant to an SMS group.
  • SMS: An error message appeared when closing the SMS window after sending to multiple recipients.
  • SMS: SMS functionality did not recognize newly updated telephone numbers associated to Skype Out contacts.
  • SMS: Ringing sound was not available on incoming calls.

LEIFH  Running 2.7.0.330, I was told to update to 2.8.0.722. I clicked update. It downloads fast then tells me it cannot install the update because it can't verify the creator of the update. Now I have to click manual update and re-download the update. Bravo Skype.

ALAN  I'm not updating my Skype to 2.8 until they fix the following bug:

During the audio/video call, if for some reason it gets disconnected, the call window does not go away, thus preventing the party on the other end from being able to call me back.

I've contacted Skype via so many sources but never seem to get a response from them. So frustrating that I'm about to give up on ever trying to contact big companies again. They never listen!

KLAGRECA  Well, I don't think the 64bit version will be more secure or faster, but there is one important reason why skype should be 64bit: the address book plugin/integration. There's workarounds, but I prefer not to workaround something.

Anyone want to guess how long it will take Skype to go 64bit, especially since little has changed with Skype in the past year or so? I'll bet on 16 months before we see a 64 bit version, if we're lucky.

There's nothing about a 64-bit app that makes it more stable. Any app can be stable or unstable regardless of whether it's 64 bit, 32 bit, or even 16 bit or 8 bit. Well-engineered code makes and app stable, not 64 bit.

YOSHINATSU  Sure iChat is the best way to communicate with Mac users, but Skype is cross-platform, and is the best application of this kind for cross-platform communication.

All Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

Great piece of software.

CHARLESPICKRELL  If you don't use Skype enough, your Skype credits will be deleted and your money NOT refunded.

5.3 Credit expiration: A credit balance for Skype Credit in Your User Account expires 180 days after the last chargeable use of that Skype Credit. Credit balances that are not used within this 180 day period will be lost.

SOLOSAINT  yeah, people tell me the same thing, iChat has better quality... its a typical Mac user experience... better quality, less people using it...

SYED ALI  I have used skype on 3 different machines running leopard and snow leopard. Used 2 different logitech cameras and the built in camera on Macbook, and people consistently tell me that the pic quality is inferior from the Mac client when compared to calls using the same hardware but running Windows and using the windows Skype client.

Has anyone else experienced this as well ?

MARK EVERITT  I've been using Skype on and off for years since it first appeared. It does what it claims to do very well and keeps me in contact with far flung friends and colleagues.

DORKYPANTS  The last version that I can successfully login to my Skype account on is 2.7.0.330. Every version since then hangs forever while trying to login. MacBook Tiger 10.4.11 with all Software Updates installed, plenty of free RAM and free disk space.

NEIL_M  Why not fully uninstall? - remove pref file, etc - then install again. Sounds like you have some form of corrupted file.

Look on google for help on uninstalling files or http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/25276/appcleaner for a free app.
