DESCRIPTION
NeoOffice is a fully-featured set of office applications (including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing, and database programs) for Mac OS X. Based on the OpenOffice.org office suite, NeoOffice has integrated dozens of native Mac features and can import, edit, and exchange files with other popular office programs such as Microsoft Office.
Released as free, open-source software under the GNU General Public License (GPL), NeoOffice is fully functional and stable enough for everyday use. The software is actively developed, so improvements and small updates are made available on a regular basis.
Please consider donating to the NeoOffice project, see the link below on this page.

WASTEDYUTHE I stopped using this and use Apple's own iWork- this software is constantly updating, which some might see as a good thing. But it got to the stage that when ever I'd load it up, there'd be a new update to download, and it got very annoying. (Version 3.0 patch 5)

BERU0 Tried to use it together with Documents To Go on my iPhone, but neither .doc nor .docx is compatible between those to (to those who wonder about that as well: Nisus is compatible with DTG, so is MS Office.) (Version 3.0 patch 5)

EIRESURG Excellent software. Don't buy Office or whatever they have for Mac. This is opensource and offers software that basically does what Excel, Word and Powerpoint do. In fact, you can make xls, ppt and doc files that you can transfer and use on Microsoft-based computers. Great stuff! My ONLY criticism is that it is slow to load. That is why I give it a 4/5. RSNS I have been a user of NeoOffice for about 18 months. It performs very well and I even write technical books with it. In my view it compares favourably with Word, mainly in its ability to write long texts, in many parts. I would have liked a bit more of typographic sophistication (as in, say, Mellel or, better, Framemaker), but it is, anyway, better than Word in that respect. I upgraded to version 3, but the program felt very slow. As I only have 1G RAM, (but an Intel processor) I thought this could be the reason. I downgraded to 2.5, and all is well again.

EASER I won't give this a rating because I probably don't work with all of the features than many writers do. For my personal needs, it's a 5-star program. I never really investigated NeoOffice before. I used it primarily to simply open Word Perfect or MS Works documents and convert them. But I recently became dissatisfied with MS Word, mostly because it won't do background scrolling and I need that frequently. Pages was okay, but every time I opened a .doc or other non-Pages document, I had to put up with the annoying "save" message. I've also worked with TextEdit and Nisus Express, but they do not always translate Word documents. In all instances, NeoOffice has faithfully displayed Word documents the way that Word would display them. I also had the problem of using other, non-Word programs and saving them in .doc or .docx formats, and Word would never render those documents the same way as I created them. But I created a simple document with NeoOffice, including images and such, and saved it in .doc format. Word displayed the document exactly the same way that NeoOffice did. I was impressed. I initially also avoided using NeoOffice because prior to version 3, it was way too slow. But as others have said, version 3 is much faster. I have now made this my primary word processor. I have yet to tinker with the spreadsheet and presentation features, but I am certainly optimistic. (Version 3.0)

DAVEU I've been an avid user for more than a year and have donated to the project more than once. But once 3.0 came out, I can no longer use this. When using a table, 5 rows are added to the bottom of the table every time I Save and Close. Suddenly I was printing blank pages and discovered all of these ghost rows that went on to another page. So I opened the document in Word and all of my work was completely gone. Erratic behavior mixed with Word users unable to view my documents, means I can't use it. I'll miss you NeoOffice. I hope you come back to your senses soon. (Version 3.0)

KABING Remember that you can always go back to version 2.2.5 of NeoOffice. Also, it would be very helpful if you could report the issues you are having: https://trinity.neooffice.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewforum&f=7 The developers are very active in the forums and work hard to fix the kind of issues you have experienced. If they detemine that the problem is related to the underlying OpenOffice.org code, there may not be much they can do. But if it something they can fix, they will do so quickly and release a patch. Either way you'll get a clear answer. (Version 3.0)

ELIEZER_SEGAL MS Office has reached a stage where it is simply not usable anymore. Not only can it not handle right-to-left languages (and has no plans to ever do so...), but it cannot even read my old Word documents (e.g., text in text-boxes does not show up on the screen!). The current Neooffice Writer seems to be completely compatible--my demanding Word files load up perfectly so far. At this point the main shortcoming is a lack of choices for bibliography/footnoting software. I am restricted to Zotero, which is a fine app., but the plugin chokes on large bibliographies. Hopefully that well-known bug will be repaired soon. (Version 3.0)

BURAK Activity Monitor (in Leopard, PPC) has reported 185 MB real memory usage with a 264 pages long text document and this has risen to 192 MB without doing anything. Openoffice.org 3.1.0 (http://tinyurl.com/dk9qbf) uses 98 MB with the same document. (Version 3.0)

MARK FLORIDA Nobody's forcing you to use NeoOffice. It's a *free* office suite with many Mac-centric additions... If you think those additions are worth the (moderate, IMO) overhead, then use it, if not, then don't. (Version 3.0)

BURAK What kind of a stupid reply is this? I've made a very legitimate comparison based on my experience and pointed out a shortcoming. "Assassination is the extreme form of censorship." George Bernard Shaw (Version 3.0)

NEONBLUE2 But NeoOffice is faster and uses a more native theme than OpenOffice. After using Leopard for so long I've found that pinstripes really are ugly and they make the screen look dirty. (Version 3.0)
