DESCRIPTION

Sticky Windows is a utility which extends the tab browsing experience to the Desktop. Sticky Windows transforms your windows into tabs when you drag a window towards the edge of your screen. Providing you with a completely clutter-free workspace. By clicking on the tab the user can show and hide the window.

The tab can be created by dragging a window on the left or the bottom or the right side of the main screen. Each tab displays the window title as well as the associated application icon. The tab's icon provides a contextual menu which offers some useful commands (show/hide window, close tab, switch)

To remove a tab, simply drag it away from the screen edge, or choose 'Close Tab' from the tab's context menu. If the window is not currently visible when the tab is dismissed, the original window is re-displayed on the screen. A behavior similar to Sticky Windows was available in the Finder of Mac OS 9. However the handy feature which Sticky Windows adds to Mac OS X is now available for any application (non only for the Finder) and tabs can be created in the 3 free sides of the screen (not only the bottom side as in OS 9).

Sticky Windows has been designed to be light in CPU usage. You will seldom see it using more than 1% of your CPU. This is particular important for Powerbook users that will be able to use it without worrying that it will drain their batteries.

SIGIL  This is from their website: "Snow Leopard status...

Sticky Window does not currently work in SnowLeopard. We need to rewrite a significant portion of the code base to make it compatible with Snow Leopard. Sticky Window relays on a hack of the Dock which is made significantly harder (really not viable). It is going to take time and we cannot estimate the length of the development time, given we don't have a workaround yet... however we are doing our best! And we love Sticky Windows as much as you do!"

So, we just have to wait. =)

DOOBIEXX  Yep, definitely not fun waiting but I can't wait just for this app to move on to snow leopard. Most other software has already been made compatable so although I am sure it is hard, it's going to happen eventually. Instance of an app relying on the dock is "quay," They had a fix within a couple days...

Sticky windows must be much much harder though as it's obviously taking a lot of time for the dev to release a version. I am satisfied knowing that he is working on it and not abandoning a great essential application, so I am much appreciation for him taking on the huge hurdle.

SIGIL  I must add that I have contacted the developer on several occasions. I was contacted promptly. Initially, when I purchased the app, I had some technical issues. This was some time ago (late 2008 or early 2009). These issues were resolved.

SIGIL  I love this app. I'm using Leopard's spaces much less. I am not experiencing any technical issues. I'm running it on My iMac (intel), Macbook Pro (intel) and my Powerbook G4.

CUNEYT  @ ERUSSELL

You just described exactly what I had with my Mac OS, Sticky Windows is off system for now, but I still have a onetime/single crash of my Dock each time just right of after starting up, when all the menubar icons load.. my Dock disappears for a couple of seconds and then comes back with no further consequences. I am sure its a crash because when I search CrashReporter with Spotlight I find a file called Dock.crash.log

CUNEYT  Never mind, I found out it was an app called Virtue Desktops, something like Spaces for Tiger.

ERUSSELL  I had same problem... took days to identify. After the Intel security patch abut 4 days (@12/20) ago now my dock started disappearing (and then reappearing on its own) on first mouse click. That was the obvious issue but it broke further mouse clicks frequently, couldn't select properly, various unexpected behaviors. Finally deleted Stickie Windows (other apps too but it was the one after which the system worked). Then downloaded and reinstalled thinking maybe SW had been updated. Same problem. Now off system. I like the program have used it for years, but it needs updating now.

EVERLAST_34  Ive been using this app for awhile and I was really surprised at all the negative reviews. Apparatnley it didn't work well for everyone, but for me, I couldn't imagine my mac without it. I use it all the time. I've never had a problem with it and would recommend it highly.

GORDON  Looks beautiful and seems to work well until you restart - all the tabbed windows expand again which, to me, defeats one of the main uses of this software. MacPro with 10.5.5.

GLOBETROTTERDK  Don't waste your money on this app. The developer never replies to e-mails, and updates don't fix OS compatibility issues.

SJSW  I liked this utility in demo mode but the trouble started after buying a license (it's $19.95 by the way, not $15.95). After receiving the serial I went to the pref pane to register the program and...no dice. The pane just dims and none of the "options" on the pane are available, it just seems to lock up and I can't input the serial anywhere. That's not the worst thing though, because as someone who purchases a lot of shareware I can understand developers having problems keeping up with system updates, etc.(I'm running 10.5.4) and I generally cut them a lot of slack because most are good guys busting their butt to make their customers happy. What I do find inexcusable is not answering emails about a problem and after 2 emails to this developer I still haven't heard anything back. This after having to scour his site just to find an email address to write to in the first place. I wanted to write this as a warning to others because I broke my own rules about buying shareware when I purchased this so in that respect it's "my bad". The rules are if it's not a least 4 stars on MacUpdate don't buy it (with common sense used in the number of reviews) and if it hasn't been updated in less than six months...ditto. I broke both rules with this guy and I won't be breaking them again anytime soon.
