DESCRIPTION

StockXloader is a native Mac OS X application for fully automated downloading of stock market quotes and indexes to the technical analysis program ProTA or ProTA Gold from BeeSoft effectively building an arbitrarily large database of tickers containing historical quotes for the open/high/low/close of each day!

  • It collects quotes from Yahoo! Finance for almost any stock exchange in the world.
  • The downloaded information is automatically imported into the database of ProTA. In the process, it informs ProTA which tickers are stocks, which are mutual funds, and which are indexes so that any new ticker is put into the right category by ProTA.

You can try out a full and completely uncrippled version of StockXloader for evaluation up to 60 days, try before you buy! Read more about StockXloader on the product page.

Features of StockXloader include:

  • The system treats daily quotes and historical daily quotes of stocks, mutual funds and indexes.
  • For a list of Yahoo tickers, you can download historical quotes for all those tickers many years back in time! And you can also download all the quotes for today, even if there are hundreds of tickers!
  • StockXloader keeps four separate "region" lists: "EU", "US", "A" and "X" , that you can fill with arbitrarily many tickers from almost any stock exchange in the world.
  • For current-day quotes from Yahoo, they enforce a restriction as to the number of tickers — a maximum of 200 tickers per "batch" download. However, StockXloader has the ability to work around that limitation by automatically and seamlessly dividing it all up into as many chunks as is necessary!
  • StockXloader keeps track of the last date you successfully downloaded data for each region (really got some data, not just attempted a download!).
  • For all dates of last download, you can back any of them as much as you need: days, months, years, for building a historical database!
  • StockXloader provides you with very detailed progress information concerning how the download and conversion proceeds, what is currently being processed, missing dates, empty tickers, error conditions etcetera.
  • For Yahoo historical quotes, StockXloader warns you about those tickers that do not have any data or do not have as recent quotes as the most recent ticker has.
  • After all the files have been downloaded, they are processed to fit the import specifications for ProTA and assembled into a single file, which automatically gets imported into the database of ProTA.
  • It verifies fields to find out what the latest date is where you really got some data, and all dates are converted into a format that is independent of your preferred date format in ProTA. The format is also independent of your chosen decimal separator (period or comma).
  • The full security names and type codes are obtained from the ticker files, so that ProTA can create new ticker symbols automatically in the right categories with full security names.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 3.4.5:
  • Fixes a problem in Tiger that prevented downloads if this was the first time StockXloader was used. (The problem was caused by a change in 3.4.4, which worked flawlessly on Leopard, but an old bug in the Tiger OS caused problems there.)
  • New feature: A new menu item and shortcut in the Tools menu that does the same as clicking the Download button.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

WHYTOI  Have just been notified today by email from the developer that v3.3.4 does not work under Mac OS X 10.5. No ETA on a compatible release at this stage.

I am disappointed that the developer has not taken the effort to sort out the problem before the commercial release of 10.5 nor provide an ETA on a fix.

ANONYMOUS  I asked for StockXloader to do options it has been added now. There was a small problem when I up graded to OSX 10.4 and that is now fixed. Really great support. It is worth every nickel and more. I bought it and use it and recommend it. Now if ProTA would come out with an OSX version!

ANONYMOUS  Stockxloader is for getting historical and present quotes quickly and easily in to ProTA. Quicken won't do that. ProTA does a lot more charting and other technical analysis that Quicken. I use ProTA and StockXloader together and am not aware of another program that will get Yahoo quotes in to ProTA as easily and quickly as StockXloader. StockXloader was worth it to me.Now if only ProTA would be released OSX native.

There are other cheaper programs that get quotes and do basic charting. Everything depends on a persons needs.

ANONYMOUS  This program is fast at downloading and easy to set up. It does what it says and the developer is quick to respond to emails. Used with ProTA (a technical analysis program), you can do much more than with Quicken. I bought it and I like it. Saves me an awful lot of time.

JIMW  While I am not a big fan of Quicken, I nevertheless find it interesting that automatically downloading stock quotes is one of its many features, including but not limited to maintaining your entire portfolio, yet Quicken retails for around $20 less than this product that only downloads quotes.

While I deem it highly probable that someone will reply to this message to point out that this program uses Yahoo for quotes and is a much more extensive, should I not have added this paragraph.

Then the obvious question then becomes: "What percent of the people needing to download quotes actually need this extended capability." I suspect the number is rather small and that the quote capability of Quicken will serve the majority of users rather nicely.
