STEVE R I'm no longer finding that 1Password will create a new login account, and I'm also finding that 1Password is no longer able to login to certain websites. (Version 5.0.1)

AKMEDIA Another issue that Apple actually claimed is fixed in Safari 5.0.1 is a black bar that hides the text in emails generated by other applications, including iCal's "Event Accepted" emails. That issue is not resolved for me, even after trashing Safari's preferences file. Apple's KB article explaining this issue is here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3385 (Version 5.0.1)

ISLANDMACMAN I'm liking this new version - the Extensions are handy. I particularly like the AdBlock and Old Google Image Search. Performance wise, I feel a slight increase in speed. Perhaps because I removed my SIMBL based AdBlocker (if you uninstall this, make sure you also remove the LaunchAgent, because uninstalling doesn't do it). Other than that, no major issues yet. Great job Apple! (Version 5.0.1)

ALBABE Thanx so much for the heads up on the extensions. I wasn't paying attention and hadn't realized that Safari has finally almost caught up to FireFox in that department. (Version 5.0.1)

SLARKIN Unless I missed it, The Safari update does not address this problem described in the 7.26.10 TidBITS: "Safari Reveals Personal Info Via Auto-Fill -- Jeremiah Grossman has discovered and explained a potentially significant security flaw in Safari 4 and 5. In essence, if you have the AutoFill option "Using info from my Address Book card" enabled, a malicious Web site can extract your name, company, city, state, country, and email address without your knowledge. For the moment, we recommend turning off that option in Safari's AutoFill preference pane. Apple told the New York Times (though not Grossman, who reported the bug) that they are "aware of the issue and are working on a fix." This is a security breach! (Version 5.0.1)

BUZZARD Safari 5.0.1 does fix this issue. Refer to: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4276 and http://www.macrumors.com/2010/07/28/safari-5-0-1-and-4-1-1-address-autofill-security-flaw/ Perhaps you should consider googling before you post such issues? (Version 5.0.1)

I noticed that too... In fact, it seems if anyone Reports anything wrong or has a problem at all... their Comment gets De-Smiled. Must be some really odd Psychological affliction. (Version 5.0.1)

JAZZYGUY It appears Safari Cookies was the problem after all. I went to preferences after restarting and all is OK. This version of Safari is "blazingly fast" as some other reviewer has said. (Version 5.0.1)

JAZZYGUY Very Fast but Preferences causes Safari to crash. Updated Safari Cookies but that didn't work. Uninstalled Safari Cookies and preferences still made Safari crash. Updated Flash player but that didn't work. Safari is very fast but preferences makes it crash. This is a head scratcher. (Version 5.0.1)

AGMASTER I'm glad they fixed this -- Fixes an issue that could cause Flash content to overlap with other content on facebook.com, crateandbarrel.com, and other sites when using Flash 10.1 I can never stand using any other browser because Safari 5 is just that amazing. It's been the fastest browser I've used so far. (Version 5.0.1)

SCRAGS 5.01 is still a DOG. Takes forever to load pages, sometimes doesn't load at all. Sometimes on third or fourth try. I had download 4.05 after installing 5.0 and have been anxiously awaiting a fix. 5.01 is not the fix. (Version 5.0.1)

MUDFLAPPER Instead of giving this guy a bunch of thumbs downs, why not try to help him figure out why Safari is running slowly on his machine? Safari is incredibly fast even on my aging original Intel Core Duo iMac, so there's got to be something else going on here. Running any plugins? Maybe an outdated Flash plugin? Have you tried deleting your Safari prefs? Or, uninstalling Safari altogether and installing the newest version from scratch? What kind of Mac do you have? How much memory? (Version 5.0.1)
| Jul 29 2010 |
The reason why people like me give him a 'thumbs down' is because what ever we say will go right over his head and he'll ignore it. If he was really interested he would actually go into more detail than just saying something horrible and giving some useful information that can help with the diagnostics. For the record I note that with 5.0 exhibited some weird behaviour of hanging when opening up new tabs but it appears to be fixed 5.0.1 - the issue appears to have shown itself when there are websites that have alot of Flash. Since installing the adblocker extension the problem has suddenly 'gone away'. (Version 5.0.1)

MUDFLAPPER You know Kawaii, you're probably right. I guess I was just feeling empathetic tonight :) . I've gotten frustrated with an app or two in the past so I know how the guy feels. But I agree that he should've asked for help, and, used less caustic language. (Safari isn't a dog...period.) However, I once posted a very polite troubleshooting comment on MacUpdate regarding Transmission and the fanboys tore me a new one. I was just trying to figure why it was hogging so much ram. I even proclaimed my love for the app and my faith in the developers, but nobody reached out to help, they just gave me lots of frownies. So Scrags, here's your chance. Do you want some help or do you just want to rant? (Version 5.0.1)
| Jul 29 2010 |
You were probably attacked regarding Transmission because the reasons are well known; it is a multi-platform application that uses stuff like Python (and other multi-platform technology) which are not light on the resources. You tend to find that people who attack tend to expect you to already know why something is the way it is. Its part of the geek culture of coming down on people who are ignorant of things like a tonne of bricks. (Version 5.0.1)

SCRAGS Hey Kawaii - you're pretty smug, aren't you? "The reason why people like me give him a 'thumbs down' is because what ever we say will go right over his head and he'll ignore it." You know me that well, do you? First of all, you can categorize your posts as reviews, troubleshooting, tips or comments. Mine was a comment. I wasn't asking for your help. But that probably went right over your head. Then you go on to say that you had the same problem loading pages with lots of Flash so you installed an adblocker and that fixed the problem. So you are criticizing me because I don't want to cripple Safari's usefulness in order to make it usable? Funny, I didn't have to do that with 4.0.5 or Firefox or Chrome. You know so much more than "people like me" so I guess you know that all you have to do is Google "Safari 5 slow" and you will get thousands of hits from every major site that covers Mac or Apple reporting the same problem as I am having. You (in your infinite wisdom) surely also know that the Apple discussion boards have been flooded with reports of the same problem, and flooded with potential fixes, but you won't find one page where it states "issue resolved." My point is "people like me" might just be smarter than you think. This is a known issue, dude; granted, not for everyone, but for a lot of us. My comment was directed at other "people like me" who are experiencing that same issue. If I had seen a comment like mine I would have known not to waste my time downloading the update, and I would have been grateful. A fix will come, either by way of an update or someone will pinpoint exactly what is conflicting with Safari. I'm as big an Apple fan as "people like you" but that doesn't mean that once in a while there aren't problems. Are we supposed to pretend they don't exist? And if it exists for me and not for you does that mean it's not valid? Again, pretty smug. BTW, I have tried every fix offered on every site I can find (yeah, surprise, "people like me" research problems and deploy suggestions). I've reset Safari. Changed DNS servers to Open DNS. Disabled plug-ins. Uninstalled/reinstalled Flash. Repaired permissions. Run DiskWarrior. On and on. It is still dreadfully slow to load pages even with Flash completely uninstalled and all plug-ins disabled. I will continue to try any other potential fixes that anyone has to offer. This is happening on three of my Macs and I personally know other folks who are frustrated with the same problem (one guy I know was on the phone with his ISP for an hour complaining about slow service. Finally the tech asked him if he had recently upgraded to Safari 5. He said yes and was told that many users were reporting the same problem after upgrading). So, get off your high horse. If you want to help I'd be glad to listen. But don't get personal. It only makes you look - well, never mind, to finish that thought would be getting personal... (Version 5.0.1)

SCRAGS To Mudflapper - Thanks for coming to my defense (kind of). See my reply to KAWAII. I don't think calling Safari a dog is "caustic language." Check the thesaurus. "Dog" is a synonym for slow. I posted what I thought was an honest comment about the update and woke up this morning to find myself being attacked. Anyway, I appreciate you input and empathy as compared to others on this board. Oh, in spite what others presume to know about me I am open to all suggestions. (Version 5.0.1)

SCRAGS I have narrowed down the problem with pages loading slowly in 5.0 and 5.0.1, but I don't know what to do with what I've learned. Through trial and error I have determined that it has something to do with Java and JavaScript. If I disable them in Preferences, Safari flys! If I enable Java but uninstall Flash, it is still slow. It seems to be specifically related to Java (and JavaScript). I downloaded and re-installed Apple's Java for Mac OS 10.6 Update 2 but that did not help. Does Java have preference files or anything I can fix/repair/delete? Is there a way to uninstall Java and reinstall? Any advice greatly appreciated. (Version 5.0.1)

ALBABE Hey MUDFLAPPER & SCRAGS: I mostly agree with you guys. MacUpdate seems to have a lot of guys who are either mindless supporters of certain clients, or more likely programmers who work for and on these clients. And I especially agree about Transmission. I used to contribute to their forum but I got pissed on by these smarmy pompous insecure egocentric little trolls who couldn't stand any critiques of their beloved ap. I would ask questions... and when I got no response, I'd ask them again... and then I would get insults thrown at me because I asked questions that weren't answered. I was insulted because I don't understand Programmer lingo. And then... one of them followed me over here, acting pseudo-lofty but really being intellectually dishonest and disingenuous about certain events. I think a lot of these guys have multiple accounts (like some folks at YT) so they can come over here and respond to their own posts and make it look like their opinion is the only real valid one. This is supposed to be a Community... not a butt-smoochin' group. (Version 5.0.1)
