DESCRIPTION
AppleJack is a user friendly troubleshooting assistant for Mac OS X. With AppleJack you can troubleshoot a computer even if you can't load the GUI, or don't have a startup CD handy. AppleJack runs in Single User Mode and is menu-based for ease of use.
Using AppleJack, you can repair your disk, repair permissions, validate the system's preference files, and get rid of possibly corrupted cache files. In most cases, these operations can help get your machine back on track. The important thing is that you don't need another startup disk with you. All you need to do is restart in Single User Mode (SUM), by holding down the command and s keys at startup, and then typing applejack, or applejack auto (which will run through all the tasks automatically), or applejack auto restart (which will also restart the computer automatically at the end of the process).
WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.5: - Leopard compatibility! (Thanks Steve Anthony!)
- Improved console output suppression from launchd processes.
- Improved the process of finding valid user directories, drawing on netinfo, /etc/passwd, and /Users directory as needed. Users can now be chosen by user id or user name, as well as the old method of entereing the home directory.
- Logging is more complete
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4 - 10.5 or later.

DKLAWLESS AJ Users (all thousands of you), Having used this application for years I can recall numerous times that this untility has save me countless hours of work. I just visited the developers site to find out he is in the same pinch as he was with the move to OS10.5. He is strapped for money to develop the update to Snow Leopard . Listed as FREEWARE he will accept donations. Please consider a donation to help him. It won't take much to fund a solution. EX: an external hard drive and Snow Leopard. The link is: .

AMURO OS X 10.5.8 Build 9L30 and latest security update as of Aug 13 Applejack shows some errors in my iMac when trying to repair permissions. The logs don't have record of on-screen errors. Had to ctrl-C to interrupt. Same for clear caches, when doing for a user stops and nothing else happens. Hope this gets fixed, it's a great tool really. (Version 1.5)

CTKMND It does run for me under 10.5.6 except it seems like it is responsible for banging up some of my preferences when run on auto or check prefs. How does AJ validate the prefs? Is AJ or some Apple utility it calls that screws up? If you installed it previous to the 10.5.6 upgrade have you tried a re-download and re-install? It's a very good safeguard repair, especially for portables so it would sure be nice to see it updated!

FREDCH Since I upgraded to 10.5.6, Applejack does not work. When I restart and hold command+s, I get only an opportunity to run fsck. The former script does not run. Model Identifier: iMac7,1 Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo Boot ROM Version: IM71.007A.B03 SMC Version: 1.20f4 (Version 1.5)
