DESCRIPTION
AcidSearch is a search enhancement for Safari. It adds unlimited "Search Channels" to the Google search field. Channels can be customized in a nearly infinite variety of ways. AcidSearch also includes powerful features such as JavaScript support, the ability to import iSeek and Butler Search Sites, true hierarchical menu organization, and the ability to search multiple search engines at the same time. AcidSearch also allows you to access your search channels with key equivalents, shortcuts (a la SafariKeywords), and a contextual menu.

AcidSearch is available in English, Japanese, traditional Chinese, Italian, and French. It is compatible with Tiger and Safari 2.0.

APIKOROS  Version 0.7b4 appears to be incompatible with Safari 3.2.x. Unwilling to do without AcidSearch, I've backed down to Safari 3.1.2. I've also petitioned the author for an update of AcidSearch.

Pretty please?

GRAHAM PERRIN  At the developer's site http://www.pozytron.com/support I have suggested a) an update for compatibility with version 3.2.1 of Safari; and b) an update to the official page http://www.pozytron.com/acidsearch

DJC0  From Terminal.app, (in /Applications/Utilities) type:

sudo rm -rf /Library/Application\ Support/SIMBL/Plugins/AcidSearch.bundle/

... should do it.

GARY W.  Free software is great, but I also believe in people getting paid for their work, certainly nothing wrong with that.

I think the developer may be underestimating the pent-up desire for this great little app to work dependably again on Safari, or even other browsers. I think if he/she were to put out a stable refined release that would really work dependably, he/she could rightfully charge a fair amount for it, and people, at least I, would gladly pay it.

And perhaps he/she is working on it. And they may also have a life way beyond silly little Acidsearch.

Anyway, here's hoping for an update soon, free or not. The ability to merely right click in any Internet search box and create a search channel in Acidsearch is awesome, not to mention it's other numerous capabilities/features. Unfortunately, I can use Acidsearch for several weeks with no problem, but eventually it causes Safari to crash absolutely every time a search of any kind is executed from within Acidsearch.

MACERICG  Very nice. This is the one feature from Firefox (via add ons) that I sorely miss when I'm in Safari. With the submenus, this actually works BETTER than the Firefox option.

Working under OS 10.4.11 and Safari 3.1.1 and appears to be running fine. Thanks for the great work developer.

TYPER91563  Literally my favorite third-party add-on in the world because it allows putting a term into a list of customizable search engines simply by right-clicking the search text and the list appears next to it as a popup menu.

The *only* reason I use Safari as my default instead of Camino (AcidSearch for Camino would be the ultimate one browser solution for me.)

I don't think the developer spends much time on it because he can't afford to, so I would urge everyone to send him a small donation if possible (I am *not* affiliated with him in any way, I just think this is the greatest piece of add-on software I regularly use and it's too bad it can't be ported or at least polished out of beta status for Safari 3.) (He's also very responsive to emails, or at least has been to me.)

WHIT_G  I miss this add-on every day! Is there any hope of an update, or should I stop checking this page? I see no indication from the author here or on his site that he's working on a fix for Safari 3.

MACUPDATE ADMIN  At the developer site there is no email address available to contact the developer, however there is a form you can use:

http://www.pozytron.com/acidsearch/bugs

Maybe you can get info that way.

TYPER91563  0.7b3 works for me on Safari 3.1, system 10.4.11 (with a couple quirks). Or, have you tried going back to 0.62?

I just got a response from the developer because I made a small donation but he didn't mention how much time (if any) he's spending on it. If you send me a private message I'll give you his new email address (I don't want to put it on the web without his permission.)

My dream: AcidSearch for Camino-->the ultimate solution to the multiple-browser question!

WHIT_G  Interesting - I was about to report, after reinstalling, that it still doesn't work, but what I just discovered is that it does work if I use the Enter key to activate my search. If I hit Return, it just toggles the search engine drop-down menu, as though I was clicking the search icon. I'd definitely rather deal with a small bug than not have the software at all!

WHIT_G  I spoke too soon - another bug seems to be that the menu also pops up when I hit the space bar. Unfortunately, that means I can't use it, since the majority of my internet searches contain more than one term. :(

RALPHEROO  With AcidSearch 0.7b3 I just found a solution to the spacebar/return key bug.

In the AcidSearch Preferences -> Options pane there is there is an empty box for:-

Key to Show Search Channels Menu : [ ]

If this is set to nothing then Spacebar and Return bring up the window. If you set this to a key combination then it frees up Spacebar to actually type a space and the Return key submits the request rather than having to use the Enter key.

Hope this helps. I was just about to deinstall it. However when I first installed 0.7b3 this key press box was sort of hiding behing the Default Channel pulldown menu but after a while it appeared in its proper place at the bottom. Maybe it was reading corrupted settings from my previous 0.62 installation?

WHIT_G  Grrrrr... I would love to attempt this, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to get my hands on v.7b3, and v.7b4 is making Safari inoperable (it seems to load but won't bring any windows up). Any idea how I can download 7b3? I've tried manipulating URLs both at the developer's site and the 7b4 download site.

HOLYPOLY  Funny - I've got the same problem as whit_g with 0,7b4 and Safari 3.1.1 under 10.4.11 on an Intel machine. Safari launches but no window loads, and Command-N does nothing. Opening a new tab forces a new window to come up with a strangly distorted Bookmarks icon, and clicking that icon OR opening a URL in the new tab makes Safari crash, as does an attempt to activate the "first" tab in the row.

WebKit nightlies open a new window at launch, new tab works too. Opening a URL in the native window works, in a new tab the same action causes WebKit to crash, too.

A new install of Safari 3.1.1 (even through Pacifist with the option of replacing everything) doesn't help.

Removing the AcidSearch bundle from the SIMBL->Plugins folder restores Safari and WebKit action to normal, every time.

However, the same combination works flawlessly on a PB 1,5 GHz 15'', as well as under Leopard 10.5.3 on a 1st gen Mac Pro.

WHITEROCK  SIMBL just put out an update so maybe Acidsearch will be updated soon. OSX 10.5 might be another problem. The author of Acidsearch doesn't accept email so let's hope he knows about SIMBL.

GRAHAM PERRIN  Use Apple Finder.

Go to FolderÂ…

~/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/

Go to FolderÂ…

/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/

At one of the two paths, Finder will show to you:

AcidSearch.bundle

Set it aside.

Quit Safari.

Launch Safari.
