DESCRIPTION
AcidSearch is a search enhancement for Safari. It adds unlimited "Search Channels" to the Google search field. Channels can be customized in a nearly infinite variety of ways. AcidSearch also includes powerful features such as JavaScript support, the ability to import iSeek and Butler Search Sites, true hierarchical menu organization, and the ability to search multiple search engines at the same time. AcidSearch also allows you to access your search channels with key equivalents, shortcuts (a la SafariKeywords), and a contextual menu.

AcidSearch is available in English, Japanese, traditional Chinese, Italian, and French. It is compatible with Tiger and Safari 2.0.

GRAHAM PERRIN  Use Apple Finder.

Go to FolderÂ…

~/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/

Go to FolderÂ…

/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/

At one of the two paths, Finder will show to you:

AcidSearch.bundle

Set it aside.

Quit Safari.

Launch Safari.

LUKE_ARMSTRONG  I cannot overstate the impact of this little program on Safari. With AcidSearch Safari becomes the best browser by far. I then had to remove it to prevent 3.2 from crashing continually and, without it, the crippling inconvenience caused by Apples greedy exclusivity deal with Google, renders Safari a hobbled parady of what it ought to be.

Come on Steve Jobs! How about putting the user before profits and incorporating multiple search engine options. It's how it should have been from the start.

I, for one, have reinstalled 3.1 with AcidSearch again. If this ever fails, I'll be switching to Firefox before resorting to Safari 3.2 or its emasculated successors.

HOLYPOLY  Version 0.70b4 does crash Safari 3.2, indeed. However, the older beta 3 does not.

Safari 3.2.1 as well as the WebKit nightlies run fine with 0.70b3 under both Tiger and Leopard, I found.

A downgrade of well-developed Safari, for compatibility with an un-developed product, is not a recommended approach. Are you confident that your persistence with a downgraded product combination will allow you to receive all critical security updates?

You can use another product that places multiple user-configurable engines in the search menu. I do so.

WebKit is open source

http://webkit.org/ and there's nothing to prevent us from contributing or improving code. The 'greedy exclusivity' description does not fairly reflect the open nature of the software.

APIKOROS  Version 0.7b4 appears to be incompatible with Safari 3.2.x. Unwilling to do without AcidSearch, I've backed down to Safari 3.1.2. I've also petitioned the author for an update of AcidSearch.

Pretty please?

GRAHAM PERRIN  At the developer's site http://www.pozytron.com/support I have suggested a) an update for compatibility with version 3.2.1 of Safari; and b) an update to the official page http://www.pozytron.com/acidsearch

DRYWALL  I love the idea of this. But on my machine (10.5.4, Safari 3.1.2) the Preferences are so munged that I'm not able to customize it at all. I can't delete channels, for example. The action menu and help menus do nothing. The "Options" section has elements overlapping one another and half the options appear to be positioned where I can access them. The meanings of various settings are very obtuse. And so on and so forth.

Disappointed. Maybe a new version will fix, but until then, this one's a no-go for me. Hopefully developer will keep plowing ahead, I'd love to use (and would even pay a bit for) a functional version.

GARY W.  Free software is great, but I also believe in people getting paid for their work, certainly nothing wrong with that.

I think the developer may be underestimating the pent-up desire for this great little app to work dependably again on Safari, or even other browsers. I think if he/she were to put out a stable refined release that would really work dependably, he/she could rightfully charge a fair amount for it, and people, at least I, would gladly pay it.

And perhaps he/she is working on it. And they may also have a life way beyond silly little Acidsearch.

Anyway, here's hoping for an update soon, free or not. The ability to merely right click in any Internet search box and create a search channel in Acidsearch is awesome, not to mention it's other numerous capabilities/features. Unfortunately, I can use Acidsearch for several weeks with no problem, but eventually it causes Safari to crash absolutely every time a search of any kind is executed from within Acidsearch.

MACERICG  Very nice. This is the one feature from Firefox (via add ons) that I sorely miss when I'm in Safari. With the submenus, this actually works BETTER than the Firefox option.

Working under OS 10.4.11 and Safari 3.1.1 and appears to be running fine. Thanks for the great work developer.
