DESCRIPTION
SOHO Organizer is the official successor to Personal Organizer and Group Organizer and represents a 100% Cocoa rewrite of the former products. This means SOHO Organizer presents a first-class Mac OS X experience complete with all the features Mac OS X users expect: Aqua interface, Unicode compliance, built-in spell checking, Service support, etc. Finally, the true benefit of a complete Cocoa rewrite is that SOHO Organizer is built for the future and can easily accommodate future technologies (think Intel-based Macs).

SOHO Organizer makes managing customer relationships from phone calls and notes to appointments and to-dos easy. It embraces and leverages popular Mac OS X technologies and applications instead of trying to replace them. For example, it synchronizes seamlessly with the Address Book and iCal so that users can continue to use them and other applications that rely on their data. Users can thus use Apple's iSync to synchronize their contacts and calendars in SOHO Organizer to cell phones, iPods, Palm handhelds, and even .Mac.

DINGDONGDADDY  If this software did what it claims to do, it would be fantastic. But it crashes--a lot. I leave it on in the background and gradually I become aware of something not quite right. It's SOHO Notes or Organizer, sitting there quietly, spinning its beachball. Force Quit. And delete the program from my computer.

It has one of my all time favorite features: you can type a note with freeform text and add an actionable task anywhere within. The task has a checkbox, shows up on the calendar, and syncs with iCal. What a great way to have tasks be associated with the though process (notes) and actionable (calendar). But it all falls to pieces because the apps just freeze up.

SEAGULL23  Chronos continues to promise and then disappoint. They have a great concept, but consistently fail to execute. Every version seems to be plagued by small but annoying bugs. I bought version 7, which actually worked reasonably well. But I'm regretting the upgrade to 8.07 because of the same sort of bugs that infested versions 5 and (apparently) 6. For example, in the latest iteration you can't save records of phone conversations (a variety of error messages), and records of previous conversations have been deleted. A previous poster reported that they had actually interacted with a Chronos rep, but in my experience, their customer service doesn't exist.

Buying this company's products is sort of like being in an abusive relationship with someone you really like -- they just happen to be a complete screw-up. You keep hoping Chronos will get better, but after this release I give up on them. I strongly recommend that others not buy -- you will experience hours of frustration trying to get the software to work as it should. None of the other products on the market offer quite as much as Organizer -- but they deliver what they promise.

TANKKNIGHT  I've slowly been relying on Organizer more and more to the point that I now have retired Contactizer Pro. I still cannot get any of the v3.8.x of CP to alarm and CP support is pathetic.

With Organizer v8.x.x and Notes v8.x.x working pretty darn good I also dropped my experimentation with DevonThink. Plus to be truthful I do not have the money for multiple products.

PEARLMAN  Interesting. How do you contact them? I would love to have an email address if you have one.

ANON BUD  I just use their support system online. Unfortunately, their initial response--indicating they have received your support request--and all other correspondence from them, uses a “do-not-reply” address. All has to be done through their online system.

As I've mentioned before, they do sometimes take a long time to respond (my guess is they've only got one tech on staff) but they will. Probably not the best customer service I've experienced, but certainly not the worst as with many developers out there which, one would think, have a large support staff and resources to do it right!

Good luck.

PAULKELEHER  I strongly recommend you do not buy this software! I was a long time user of Personal Organizer and was excited when Chronos went Cocoa. However the first edition of SoHo for OSX was a joke, it was so devoid of functionality. I waited until eventually Version 8 was announced as the compete product - it had only taken Chronos what, 4 years to catch up with the 'new' OS. I should have been warned off by that inexcusable delay. I even pr-ordered Version 8 thinking it had to be the one. In fact it is slow, cumbersome, ugly - which really takes some doing for a Mac product - but what's really inexcusable is it doesn't even work properly. For example, try editing phone numbers in a contact. As you delete them it merrily creates duplicates instead - after hanging for ages - which then sync, messing up your MobileMe account too and then any other device syncing as well; it's like buying your very own virus. I've no doubt sometimes it will work for some people, but it is not safe, solid software and it should not be on sale as guaranteed to work. I've tried to delete all traces of SoHo but I'm not sure my computer has recovered yet.

If that weren't enough customer support is a joke. I've posted questions and had to wait 18 days for even a reply, never mind a solution. I've tried to request help and got not reply and my request for a refund fall on deaf ears. Somewhere the developers of this software disappeared up a blind alley; don't follow them.

PEARLMAN  Much of what Paul says is true. Chronos Customer Service does not exist.

However, I downloaded 8.0.5 and decided not to buy. Buggy and sluggish, at best. I posted some comments on their site and still have not heard back from them.

Strangely enough, the bugs I experienced with 8.0.5 were fixed in their latest update 8.0.6.

The app is still sluggish at start-up and is slower than one might expect in it's use. The concept is good, I simply think they have gone over board with all of the features.

Print essentials is great. Notes? The jury is still out for me. The contact organizer and calendar have potential. Needless to say, I'll be sticking to Address Book and iCal for now and be keeping an eye on Chronos. I've not found another app that has any potential.

It is a mystery to me why Sage does not go cross platform with their ACT app.

The code in SOHO Org. must be a nightmare and I don't envy the programmers. I say, clean it up and you'll have a product. Most importantly, beta test, beta test, beta test. I get the feeling Chronos expects the consumer to do all the beta testing. This is not a formula for success.

Focus guys!

ANON BUD  I've had no problems whatsoever at all with support. It may take several days for them to get back to me, but they almost always do. They've also been very good at trying to address the issues I've raised and have fixed many of the bugs I've pointed out.

Sorry that your experience has not been a good one.

****.

ANON BUD  Though by no means a perfect application and though there are some pretty aggravating glitches (all of which can be worked-around) Soho Organizer is a pretty good Contact/Calendar Management system.

Positives:

Prints better than iCal

Allows for various kinds of links for contacts (emails, notes, phone calls, events, files, etc.)

Nice GUI

Good Journal entry and Daily note entry

Syncs fairly well with iCal and Address Book, thus keeping Mobile Me up to date (if you've got that)

Ability to tag notes and arrange in various folders and smart folders

Much faster launch times than previous versions

Fairly good support with regular app updates to fix problems

Drag and drop of contacts on contacts to establish relationships between the two

Negatives:

Search in Soho Notes does not work

Drag and drop of contacts on established events does not work (it is supposed to)

Email of attendees from within event views does not work (the option is grayed out)

Some random crashes, though that is getting better and better

Changed event times/dates in iCal do not always sync to Organizer

I still use iCal to create most events (especially with the “Create in iCal” contextual menu in Mail) as I am able to email attendees from iCal and not from Organizer.

It would be nice if there was a LaunchBar plugin for Organizer so that I could find specific note links to contacts.

Would be nice if I could use Spell Catcher with Organizer.

This is a much better and more stable app since version 8 (and getting rid of OpenBase architecture helped), so check it out!

ALLANMACAM  Cookie08, are you in 32 or 64 bit mode on Snow Leopard? I just wonder why clean installs of Organiser on three clean systems should result in such a horrendous experience, yet in your case, it appears to work well enough to become default for you?

Any hints much appreciated.

COOKIE08  I am still in Leopard G5 dual. I had already removed all vestiges of any old version of SOHO the open databases in the frameworks folder etc. I had been using Contactizer pro which is excellent but a bit overkill. Made sure the iCal and address book were synced with Contactizer then removed it and and its files using CleanApp. Rebooted then installed SOHO.

Let it sync with the iCal and AddressBook and then started using it and it is working very well the new data base there using seems to be robust no multiple entrys etc syncs back to iCal and Mail straight away reads the emails lists in a pane from Mail as soon as you click on an entry in the address module you can click on any mail entry mail starts and opens the email all very smooth at last!!!

Even though I prefer to use DevonThink Office pro brilliant program the fact that Chronos are bring out a note program for the iPhone will be interesting as it is supposed to sync with soho notes which could be very handy!

COOKIE08  I am trying this V8 again and finding that the bugs are gone and the program is as quick as Contactizer pro and much more mac os like like using an extended iCal with integrated address book. So far it syncs really well no problems syncs direct with mobile me well also.

The other bonus is the print essentials the great label printing app and notes thrown in as well.

After three days use I am now fully using SOHO Organizer as the replacement for iCal and address book.

ALLANMACAM  I would really like to like this product but as of version 8.0, Notes still doesn't show Pages documents in full, only an icon; it says a working (and supported) scanner is not connected. Organiser can not send invitations to participants from events, it doesn't sync with Google calendars, panes showing mail or events for a contact can disappear when activated or changed and the whole importing of version 7 databases is slow and very buggy - First run all contacts had lost their groups. The program looks great and I feel it runs quicker for the moment but I feel I'm back to Devonthink and Contactizer. Such a pity!

TANKKNIGHT  I gave up on version 7 back in June as Openbase was upgraded and SOHO would not work with the new version.

I have been experimenting with DeveonThink, but with SOHO 8 out I figured to try again. SOHO 8 works! Its much faster and a nice new GUI. However, it still has a major bug ... They said you can migrate your version 7 database - NOPE! The SOHO Migration App starts off great then hangs. I tried using the backup file, but the same results.

I really wish Chronos would do just a little more testing/quality control.

Deducting 2 stars since all my version 7 is not accessible.

ANON BUD  I made the mistake of migrating my v. 7 database over, thinking that the unique notes attached to contacts would be processed. What I got was a complete duplication of everything! When you first start SO it automatically adds information from iCal and Address Book. Then when I did the migration it was all duped! Good thing I made a backup of iCal and AB prior to this and that I was able to quit SO before the sync process to those apps. I deleted the SO database and restarted and now things are good, however none of the links to calendar items and previous notes remained. SO could use more documentation for this process to let folks know just exactly what happens with a migration and who should and should not do it.

I'm holding off on a complete review til I've had a chance to see whether the many bugs from v. 7.x have been fixed. Though I've seen vestiges of fixes and some of the old bugginess…

TATAMI  I bought SOHO Organizer 7 about a year ago and eventually gave up using it. For me the big problem was that once I'd entered a multi-day event I couldn't edit it. Double clicking on the event appeared to open up a dialogue box off the bottom of the screen. I posted a request for support and got no reply. I've downloaded v 8.0 and now v 8.01 and the problem persists. No support forum on Chronos' website so no way of establishing how many others are having this problem. Any suggestions?

TANKKNIGHT  I tried many ways to get the migration to occur without success until I read the one comment about never having SOHO before. I did a restart from my internal drive that only has OS 10.5.8 then installed SOHO Organizer. SOHO complained that I did not have Openbase and gave me a download link. The link allows you to download Openbase and to buy it or trial it ... I did not realize you had to buy Openbase as the app PhoneValet had installed a licensed copy onto my primary drive.

With all set up I then tried to convert the last database backup file that I have of SOHO 7. Worked great and had no problems importing/converting.

I copied this version 8 database over to my primary drive, deleting the empty v8 database and then restarted primary drive.

Started SOHO Organizer and then SOHO Notes ... My v7 data was all in place!!

I am still experimenting with DevonThink, but at least now I do not have to rely on Contactizer Pro ... The last 2 versions of CP do not work properly on my Mac so I am still using v3.7.5 of CP. Funny, this is the first time that I have had to use CP support and while SOHO support is non-existent, CP support is crappy.
