DESCRIPTION

Graphviz is an open source automated graph layout software, featuring a new document-based GUI, export to PDF and many more bitmap formats, full alpha transparency, native font and shapefile support and anti-aliasing.

With AT&T Graphviz, you don’t figure out the graph, the program does. Using a simple file format called dot, just describe which nodes should connect to which other nodes. Then the sophisticated layout routines quickly render it into many different output formats.

You get these distinctives with the Mac OS X version:

  • Document-based GUI with the Macintosh look-and-feel:
    • Preview and zoom graphs, from 12.5% to 800%.
    • Pan the graph with the hand cursor.
    • Tweak settings with a drawerful of switches and component defaults, and see the effect immediately.
    • Can't figure out a setting? Tooltips to the rescue...
    • Choose fonts and colors with the integrated font and color panels.
    • Print and export graphs using familiar menu commands.
    • Click to edit the file, then save it and the changes are automatically picked up.
    • Check the activity window for the actual command line calls.
    • Open files or portions of text as graphs from other applications.
    • Remember settings for the next graph, or change settings via the command line.
  • Easy installation:
    • Drag-and-drop to install, no separate installer required.
    • Works out of the box on stock Mac OS X 10.2 or better system, no third-party libraries required.
  • Quartz rendering:
    • Direct export to paged or embedded PDF.
    • Supports full alpha transparency.
    • Supports native fonts.
    • Supports shapefiles: PDF, Postscript, JPEG, PNG and all Quicktime formats.
    • Anti-aliases shapes and text.
  • Quicktime exporting:
    • Supports all Quicktime image formats: SGI, Photoshop, Windows BMP, JPEG, Macintosh PICT, PNG, MacPaint, TIFF, Targa, JPEG 2000 and Quicktime Image.
    • Automatically recognizes additional export components.

Graphviz is "open-source" freeware, but donations are encouraged.

STUDIODAVE56  Would have liked to try this but until the developer learns how to set up proper downloads I will pass. Even for free. Have you heard of .dmg

SHILL  If I recall correctly, I have used a version of Graphviz on a version OSX before 10.5. Did you put out a pre-Leopard version of Graphviz at one point, and if so, can you make it available for us 10.4 folks?

SHILL  For some reason there was a big whitespace between the top of the page and the previous versions, and I didn't scroll down. D'oh!

    Thank you!

SCIFI  To MacUpdateAdminGuys&Gals and to these Developers,

You–all seem to be missing the point. We Tiger users need a *current* version of these apps, not a moldy *previous* version. ;)

I guess I’ll try building from the source tarballs but note it isn’t for the faint–of–heart (that’s what MacPorts users will end–up doing as well). Also note this project in particular looks like it’ll require X11 and all sorts of other non–Mac GUI stuff e.g. GNome, most of which I have already installed locally here as shared libs — thus my build probably won’t be a self–contained one with static libs and I wouldn’t be able to distribute my build for others to use this way — but that’s the way Things Ought To Be™ on a true–blue *ix system for a whole gaggle of technical reasons, most importantly the moldy pre-packaged previous versions will undoubtedly be using old code from the same dependent projects as well.

Y’see how Leopard–only developers are ABUSING the open–source traditions here? Do y’all see that???

Yes indeed even Apple have gotten off–track in this regard also — their “promise” of being “more Linux–friendly” is long–long–long gone IMO.

This website is going to need a new filter that lists only the apps that are known to be Jaguar–, Panther–, Tiger–compatible vis–à–vis Leopard–only etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. And appropriate options be placed on the Developers “Add A File” panel as Required items before posting the app made publicly available.

…ok I had my spiel, bring on the flamewars…

JOHANNES REXX  This tool does not seem to give you any means to actually create, author, or manipulate the graphs. All I could do was open the provided DOT files, change the basic layout engine preferences, and export the diagrams to a variety of file formats.

How th actually create the DOT files gaphically is not obvious to me. Maybe I'm just having a bad day.

GLEN LOW  Thanks for looking at Graphviz. After you create a new graph using the New menu command, click on the Edit toolbar item and choose a text editor e.g. TextEdit. You can then modify the DOT commands using the editor, and saving it will automatically re-render the graph.

The DOT language is fairly straightforward and there is some online help available.

JOHANNES REXX  Let me confess to some laziness. I went ahead and looked at a sample DOT file and then made my own DOT file using the powerful vi command. No problem!

Here is what is TOTALLY COOL about Graphviz. Say I have it open and display my DOT file, then I go into vi and make some edits. Each time I save a change to the file, Graphviz automatically updates its graph. It knows when the file changed! This is insanely great!

Thanks to the developers for their quick and courteous support here on MacUpdate!

ANONYMOUS  awesome. If only this was out when I had that class where we had to draw those finite and pushdown automata... The actual graphviz package is too difficult to get running when you're starting on it the night before.

ANONYMOUS  Graphviz .dot file extension interferes with Microsoft Word's document template files (.dot). I don't know if this is intentional, but its a little annoying.

JOHANNES REXX  "Microsoft Word?" What's that? Oh! So why are you using expensive, closed source, proprietary, insecure, license-restricted software when Open Office exists?

I know I know - way of topic - the Devil made me do it ;-)

    GLEN LOW  Thanks for looking.

There's not much I can do since .dot is the original UNIX file name extension for Graphviz documents (been in existence for some years now).

In Mac OS 9 or on a HFS system, you could tag such files with creator = MS Word or creator = Graphviz and the system would sort it out. In Mac OS X, you can't be guaranteed this behavior especially if you don't use HFS for your file system, and creating it directly in another text editor would tag the wrong creator anyway.

I'll investigate further, perhaps the creator tag can be fixed when you create a New document.

GLEN LOW  v15 should fix this issue, especially on HFS volumes. Now dot files are created with a text file type and Graphviz creator, which should properly associate with Graphviz rather than MS Word.
