EDITOR NOTES
FotoMagico is available in $29 Home and $149 Pro versions. For a comparison between the two, click here.
DESCRIPTION
Boinx FotoMagico lets you create professional slideshows from your photos and music with just a few, simple mouse clicks. It sports a very clean and intuitive yet powerful user interface. High image quality, fast performance, and user flexibility were some of the design goals for this application.

Create the most spectacular slideshows:

  • Scale, move, rotate, zoom or pan around your images to highlight that part that matters the most.
  • Your slides fit together perfectly with the new, gorgeous transitions.
  • Provide more meaning with subtle titles here and there.

Perform a breathtaking show:

  • Your slideshow uses the best possible resolution of your presentation device.
  • Use large displays, HDTV screens and other high resolution devices.
  • Even on a VGA projector, your photos will look better with FotoMagico.

Your audience will want to take it home:

  • Burn DVDs of your slideshow with iDVD or Roxio Toast.
  • Put your slideshow on the new iPod.
  • Export in almost any QuickTime format.

Your audience will never fall asleep again.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 3.0.8:
  • Note: Screensavers cannot currently be used on Snow Leopard. They may still be created because they can be installed and used on Leopard (10.5).
  • A memory leak that was discovered in 3.0.7 and previous versions should now be gone. This probably has an impact on a number of other bugs that were reported by users.
  • Playback of movies should now exhibit less stuttering at beginning of long movies.
  • Undo was broken in previous versions after adjusting the length of an audio item (by dragging an edge). This should now work correctly again.
  • Dropping new images after the last slide should now work correctly again.
  • Bugfixes to make opening of some files more robust.
  • Made MobileMe login in Sharing Assistant more secure. Illegal characters in account name are now stripped out.
  • Support for page up/down and b key during playback enables the use of Keyspan remotes.
  • Internal changes to prepare for upcoming features.
  • Various small fixes.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Mac OS X 10.5 or later
  • G5 or Intel processor
  • 128MB video card

EGGSHELL  I was a happy user until the day I had to do a wedding slideshow for a client and I decided ( luckily for me )to test the final product on a windows machine before sending it . It was a bitter surprise - the standalone player was OSX only !

The only other high quality export option was to make a 1080p video but even at 1080p and 60 fps the image was no way near as good as the standalone player .

Unfortunately ProShow is not available for mac but that at least is understandable . Having a program that is only accessible ( if you care for perfect image quality ) to the relatively small mac users community is not

KORM  FotoMagico regularly trashes the links in its slideshows to the images that are supposed to be in the show. There is no way to fix broken links other than to start over and create a new show. There is no way to replace one image with another. For the price of this cadillac system, that's not acceptable. The app also hangs and crashes regularly. Lightroom makes far better shows.

CURLYPAWS  Another FotoMagico 2 Pro user who is very unhappy about being stung for $89 to upgrade - the same price as someone with Fotomagico 1 or FotoMagico 2 Express (or the bundled Roxio version). A strange way to treat your customers - but sadly there seems to be no attempt on Boinx's part to correct this.

FREDASH  And another FotoMagico 3.0 super hyper expansive upgrade version !!! :-D

I recall that all the fools that bought the FotoMagico PRO 2.0 version (yes the 'PRO' one...) must now PAY the same price that the 'normal' Express verion users !

This is a steal and very POOR CONSIDERATION for their PRO users!!!

VERY disapointed by their PRO upgrade price policy.

TITOMUERTE  I would tend to disagree with some of the other reviewers here. It's not good software. It's not bad software, but it's tremendously inferior when compared to offerings like Photodex ProShow Gold.

I make slides that have to be precisely aligned with the timing in the music. Not only does their "sync to audio length" feature not work very well (it routinely just ignores slides at the end), but they also lack the key feature that Proshow has that allows one to exactly map out transitions to music.

If it was merely lacking these two features, it would still be forgivable. However, to make matters worse, the software doesn't consistently line up music to the slides. I can spend an hour painsteakingly going through each transition ensuring it matches with the music precisely...only to have it be off by a half-second when I go back and review from the beginning. It's tremendously frustrating not to get a consistent sync between the audio/video; and reason enough for this software to be no better than 3 stars.

I have however been happy with the quality/aliasing/sharpness/lack of blur in the renderings and exports of the completed videos.

ZOOKEEPER  Must agree that Photodex ProShow Gold is slick. Alas, it is not for Mac.

(* sigh) How I miss mTropolis.

DGOMBAU  Whether ProShow is better or not is irrelevant in this forum. The product is Windows only, so it is a moot point. And the fact that there is no version for Mac, a recognized platform of creatives, sends a clear message they are not interested.

MARK STARBUCK  I agree with the previous comment. Nice piece of software with a ridiculous upgrade policy. I too was caught in the v2 to v3 'no warning' scenario. I will now be deleting FotoMagico, trying to reinstall v2 - failing that I shall find something else. You would think company's like this would guard their customers, not try to lose them!

FISTER  I responded to the 'update' message when I opened my Version 2 yesterday and downloaded the new Version 3.0, unaware that it was not a free update but an upgrade with a hefty pricetag. I was then nagged for my license key so I entered my Version 2 key which, of course, didn't work.

Result: My older version was overwritten and now unusable (I'm digging around to see whether I have a backup somewhere). Boinx has not responded to my request for help restoring Version 2.

Two thoughts: (1) Boinx should make it clear that updating is NOT free and spell out clearly the upgrade costs in the update/upgrade window, and (2) $89 is roughly $60 overpriced for an upgrade.
