DESCRIPTION
Smultron is a free text editor for Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 which is both easy to use and powerful. It is designed to neither confuse newcomers nor disappoint advanced users. It should work perfectly for a whole variety of needs - like web programming, script editing, making a to do list and so on.
Smultron has all open documents in a list with beautiful Quick Look icons to your left just like e.g. iTunes so you can easily switch between many documents - you can also choose to display them as tabs if you prefer it that way.
It is easy to program with Smultron as it colours the content in different colours depending on what the code does. And you also have many ways to search for words and line numbers to help finding the code you are looking for. You can also split the window in two to display two parts of the same document or to compare two different documents side by side.
You can also preview HTML-files directly in Smultron and save snippets of text and insert them simply with a shortcut. And if you don’t want to be disturbed by other applications or the desktop you can let Smultron cover the whole screen to let you concentrate on your work.
For the more advanced users Smultron can find all those system files that are normally hidden and it has authenticated open and saves for them. Smultron can also use regular expressions and it can run commands and scripts.
For all international users there is full support for all encodings and it is translated into many languages so you can use it in your own native tongue.

LAUGHINGRAIN  My favourite Mac text editor. It's quick to start up so great for just dropping whatever text file onto, but you still know you've got a great selection of features. (Very much unlike BBEdit, which seems bloated, slow to start up and un Mac-like when you get there.)

Good call Peter dropping Tiger support - Leopard's been out for a year and who really wants the old OS holding the product back. I'd rather you got to spend time making a great app!

****.

BROCK SAMSON  Used to be my main editor until I started having to open large files on a network share - very slow and painful. TextWrangler ended up being more than twice as fast at opening the same file (by "opening" I mean bringing up the file and having the ability to scroll through all of the text without hanging).

FONIK  Simply THE best GUI text editor on the Mac platform. It may not have awesome hotkey support like Vim, but the simple interface and easy set up make it my weapon of choice for Mac text hacking.

REVISION29  This app has a small foot print and performs pretty quick. The new toolbar icons make it even nicer.

ASDFASD  I leave this text editor! Simple and efficient...

But I think its time to a new update. Code folding and a higher number of snipets would be quite useful.

But for me its still is my favorite text editor and a lot more mac like than BBedit.

Cheers

DWIMMERLAIK  Wonderful app. I discovered this one when I was looking for a good replacement when I converted from Windoze to Mac. :)

One suggestion...would it be possible to create/enable a setting to set Smultron as the default Text Editor? I like to keep things fairly simple and when I double-click on a *.txt document and it opens in the default Text Editor, it annoys me. Sure, I can right-click and tell it to open with Smultron, but if there was a system-wide default setting that could be configured, that would be ideal.

GMAPPER  Dwimmerlaik,

If I understand you correctly, you want to set Smultron to be the default app for .txt files. This is actually supported by the Mac OS, and can be done for any file type/application, similar to the file associations in Windows.

Just select a text file (any file with the .txt extension) in the Finder, go the "File" menu, and select "Get Info". In the Get Info window, you'll see a section called "Open with:" From that area, you can select the application that you want to be the default for this type (in this case "Smultron"). Click on the "Change All..." button, and you can make it the default application for all text files.

Hope that makes sense.
