DESCRIPTION
Shiira is a web browser written in Cocoa. It uses the KHTML rendering engine provided by Apple's Web Kit. Since this is the same rendering engine used by Safari, HTML content rendered by Shiira will look the same as in Apple's own browser. All source code is publicly available under the BSD license. We hope that our code will help other developers just starting out on their own Web Kit projects.
The first Shiira milestone is to implement the features used in everyday web browsing. The following has been implemented in the current version:
-
Tabbed windows
-
Bookmark management
-
Sharing bookmarks with Safari
-
Side drawer showing bookmarks and history
-
Bookmarks toolbar
-
Search field with choice of search engine
-
Customizing toolbar
-
Cache control panel
-
Window appearance switching (Aqua and Metal)
-
Toolbar icons switching
-
Removing Cookie and cache at the termination
-
Displaying favicon list
-
Enable/disable favicon with bookmark
-
Help document (Japanese only)
-
Multiple source windows per one browser window
-
Displaying HTTP header in source window
-
Wheel button operation (open in new tab, and tab switching)
-
Auto-tab for bookmark folder
-
Displaying back-forward list on toolbar buttons
-
Search text field for bookmark and history

CHAOSMAC Shiira 2.2b crashs everytime when I try to launch the browser. First the Dock Icon appears then it disappears and when it appears again Shiira crashs. (Version 2.2b090216)

BAROQUEW Every 6 months or so, I try to go back to Shiira and use it because it looks really impressive and neat. And then I remember why I never use it more than 5 minutes after download and then trash it. It just never works. Now, I can't expand a window with the "+" sign: it just disappears; I can't go into the preferences either. I have a hard time picturing people migrating when the first thing they do (make window bigger anyone?) doesn't work. Last time I tried to play with it, you couldn't run the current build if you didn't already have some older files. I wonder what new thing will make me drop it next Christmas. ROBOTANK I'm glad to see that Shiira is back from the dead. It has a lovely interface and some excellent and unique features, particularly the floating bookmark and history windows, and the OmniWeb style tab thumbnail bar. I don't think Shiira is quite ready to be my default browser (it still needs some bug fixes and better control over cookies), but I will be keeping on eye on it again and hoping to see lots of improvements in the future. Also, Glimmer Blocker and ClickToFlash (neither one is an InputManagers hack) both work with Shiira, so ad and Flash blocking are now available for it, filling in what was for me a huge hole in Shiira's feature set. ALFREDO_TOMATO When I try my portal url, it downloads to the desktop. Refreshing the code on the server helps for a short time. It loads properly on Safari, Camino, Sunrise, Omniweb, Opera. Still I like Shiira a lot, and appreciate their efforts. (Version 2.2b090216)

IAMNOSKCAJ This project's (perceived) current status is REALLY SAD. The first iteration of Shiira REALLY impressed me. I used it ALL THE TIME. Granted it had some bugs, which were never really fixed, but I used it FULL TIME. Then v2 came out, and I was floored. They had done it again. They turned the browsing world UPSIDE DOWN with their ideas -- but unfortunately the project seems to have died. I'm going to investigate whether this is opensource. I know it uses the WebKit engine (which is the rendering engine that Safari uses). At least the engine is opensource, but I'm hoping the entire project is. If ANYONE knows ANYTHING about this project's status, PLEASE reply to this comment.

PHILOMORY Shiira is/was open source, and the source has been picked up by (at least) one other developer going forward. Check out Demeter: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/25489/demeter (Version 2.2)

PAMA91 Shiira seams to be dead: http://g.shiira.jp/groups/board_show/769 When itīs true, itīs really sad. Shiira has a gorgeous interface and some unique features. But itīs a big buggy, especially on Leopard. I would use it again when they fix the problem with the bookmarks. (Version 2.2)

I really like a lot of the unique features of this browser. It seems fast, too. The UI is somewhat uneven, however. Some of the as yet unavailable preferences are needed, and it seems a bit ridiculous for this to be referred to as version 2.2 when i encountered several significant UI bugs in just 20 minutes or so of use. I've experimented with it through several versions but it's just never been stable enough to use on a regular basis, especially when Camino is so stable even in nightly builds.

MARK EVERITT I'm currently using this as my default browser. I don't really bother with bookmarks except for a few on the bookmarks bar, so that doesn't really bother me. My one issue is that find doesn't appear to work, and that could be a deal breaker. If you can get that to work, then this is perfect for me! Thanks for a neat browser. (Version 2.2)
