HistoryHound... Have you ever tried to find something in your browser history or bookmarks, but couldn't quite remember when or where you saw it? Or perhaps you've got your bookmarks meticulously organized, but it takes forever to mouse through the menus to get to something you want? HistoryHound will chase down the page for you - fast!
HistoryHound lets you quickly search for keywords in the entire
content
of all web pages and RSS feeds you've visited recently, plus all those that you've bookmarked. It's a "personal web search." Instead of hunting through endless lists of obscure URLs and page titles, just type in a few words that appear anywhere on the page, and even narrow it down to a specific range of dates if you remember when you saw it. HistoryHound will give you a list of matches, ranked by relevance.
HistoryHound currently supports Safari, Firefox, Google Chrome, Camino, OmniWeb, Opera, Shiira, Flock, iCab, NetNewsWire and URL Manager Pro.

- Resolved a conflict that could cause an "Uncaught system exception" error.
- Eliminated warning messages in the Console from plDatabase.
- Worked around a bug that could cause crashes when downloading RSS feeds.
- Corrected a display problem when using the in-application purchase engine.
- The small search bar no longer spuriously resets while you're typing.
- Fixed a few memory management bugs.
- Corrected French localization errors.

IRRADIATED SOFTWARE I really enjoy having History Hound at hand. I end up using it a dozen times a week just to find some page I hit but didn't bookmark. The tool integrates so well with my workflow that I don't even think about it until right when I need it, which is perfect. With the flexible indexing I have History Hound can search archives of NetNewsWire, and even your own webpages, etc (if you're a web developer, this can be nice for finding a snippet you put into a site, etc).

DONPERREAULT I have been using HistoryHound for years, it has worked flawlessly. I have tried HH's competition BrowseBack but it doesn't compare. So many times I need something and remember that I saw it on the web but of course I can't remember where. So, I jump to HH, enter a word or phrase and HH quickly gives me a list of all the sites that contain the word or phrase according to relevance. HH has saved me many hours searching for old sites I need to visit again. The developer (St. Clair Software) of HH is awesome, they have great customer support. If you can't find an answer to your question in the forums, he usually answers you within an hour. Love the company & the products.

ETOTHEPIEQUALSMINUSONE HistoryHound doesn't work with NetShade Proxy (paid version). All pages fail to be index due to a "connection error." This is almost certainly a compliance problem with HistoryHound, and not a problem with the NetShade Proxy. All standards-complaint, internet-accessing applications I use work fine with NetShade. After turning the proxy off, HistoryHound does work. It is a very nice app. I hope they fix this soon (and not in a paid upgrade)! Now that I have experience with the error log. It would be nice to have check boxes (or other options) on the error-log page to re-attempt to index unreachable pages. As it works now, it seems you have to re-index the whole shebang to pick-up connection-errors.

ETOTHEPIEQUALSMINUSONE The developer is VERY responsive to this issue. I'm sure this will be fixed soon. HistoryHound is an incredible time saver for people who do research. There are a few apps that pay for themselves in time saved -- this one is a no brainer!

ST. CLAIR SOFTWARE As the review two entries below yours points out, you're comparing apples and oranges. Safari does a simple "Find" by matching text in the URLs and titles of pages in your bookmarks and/or history. HistoryHound actually searches ALL OF THE TEXT in the pages in your bookmarks and history. Think of a word you saw in a particular news article that you read a week ago - not in the title, but actually in the article. Now try to find that page in your history. That's what HistoryHound does :-) | |

GLOBETROTTERDK Does anyone know how to check the CPU usage of this app? I have the feeling I am taking a CPU hit, but I can't figure out if it is because of HistoryHound or because of Time Machine indexing HistoryHound.

FELIX01 Isn't it about as easy, and a lot cheaper, to click on the Safari open book icon (which opens up all your bookmarks, history, RSS feeds, etc.) and type Command-F which opens up the Find box? Type in your keyword, click "Next" and it'll systematically find everything with the keyword.

SIDETRACKED Bit the bullet and paid the $20. It was a close call. The couple of times I needed it, it did save me some time and effort, but I found I didn't call on it all that often. Also, the search process was still a little slow, at least on my computer. In the time History Hound took sorting through all my pages, I could be halfway through a new google search. But there were those couple of times, on a subject I had been researching over time, that it was a great help getting back to the pages I needed.
