UNQ1  I love using this app with my palm 700p. They work very well together and the ease of use BEATS! VNC hands down. This version somehow seems broken. When I start up Astro and login with my palm....everything is fine, BUT after I logout with my palm and the desktop app sits idle foe awhile, it seems to lose connectivity with the open port and reports that it's NOT forwarded which is untrue because I've used a port checker and it says it IS open. Very strange, but I hope the developer(s) know of a fix. Previous versions worked just fine.

MACNEWS  Given the algorithm used, he might as well not be using encryption at all. DES was broken many years ago.

Try searching for a little app called Ferret (runs in Classic), and see how quickly and easily it decrypts DES passwords in the system. TripleDES would work here, but DES is like having no encryption whatsoever.

ASTROFLOWER   You are correct, DES is not that secure. In order to attack with brute force it would require some work but it would also require you to know what the data is. For text this isn't that hard, you decode until you get readable text. For AstroShare/AstroView its more difficult because you're dealing with graphical data. Also, the attacker would have to know the boundary of messages. In the future we will be adding more robust encryption. Using the MD5/DES combination for every packet makes AstroShare and AstroView the most secure remote desktop solution right now.

ANONYMOUS  I've tried many of the VNC offerings and this one was the easiest to set up, BUT the 5 minute trial period is ridiculous. Who can evaluate a piece of sw in 5 minutes. I have written the developers this date and hope they chose a more consumer friendly trial implementation.

ANONYMOUS  Thanks for letting me know about the 5 minutes trial period; I won't even bother to download it.

ANONYMOUS  Same here, the developer must be a Time Lord, or at the very least have no conception of how short 5 minutes is!!

God luck in trying to get this thing to fly.

ANONYMOUS  Seems to be an encrypted version of VNC, as except encryption, seems to behave exactly the same incl. the VNC typical bugs, ie, the non recognition of foreign keyboards (mine are French).

As for VNC, that can be bypassed at 90% by setting one computer keyboard (remote or server) as US and the other one (server or remote, respectively) in the foreign keyboard setup (French for me). However numbers are not recognized, except with Fn-J, Fn-P (etc) exactly as VNC... amazing coincidence, no ?

If their fix this, they will have a superiority over the "OSXvnc/chicken_of_the_VNC" couple, which still does not recognize foreign keyboards (and for which one must do the above).

As for VNC, these 2 softwares are faster than Timbuktu (mine is 603 Enterprise; using 512K ADSL on one hand and T1-gigabit on the other).

However, a good point: the documentation and easy instructions are online (thanks ! finally !).

We wait for more... The Linux version might be cool too.

ANONYMOUS  So, what makes this different from VNC?

I'm not extracting the urine here, I really want to know.

ANONYMOUS  diffrerence with VNC is simplicity.

I for one never dared enter the world of VNC, I did set up an astroshare/astroview config here in a matter of minutes.

(also, I don't know wether VNC allows talking over the same IP link?)

This said, I fully respect the free developments like VNC, even, if remote control was to become a key issue for me I certainly would trade both with much greater detail. But for now, Astroshare/view are all I need, and go fast.

ANONYMOUS  Interesting, kind of a poor man's Remote Desktop, probably useful for small setups like a single household with multiple networked Macs. But it needs to come with some kind of instructions on how to set it up and use it (I've looked around the author's Web site and haven't found anything very helpful). I'd definitely like to experiment with this, but I need some kind of help.

NICK  This is very interesting software. It definitely works and is very easy to setup. One big drawback is that you can't command-type or right click the mouse to access context menus. For instance you can't type command-H to hide a window. Hopefully this will be fixed in later versions. For now I'll keep using VNC but I'll keep an eye on this software. It looks promising.

ALDOUS ORWELL  Just by the looks of that raggedy icon I wouldn't touch this program---especially since OS X is sitting on a little Unix feature called VNC already. Two freeware apps, iVNC and Chicken of the VNC (dumb name, yep), are described in the current issue of MacAddict and are included on the mag's disc. They're all you need to make one Mac a server and another the controller.

HERVé S.  Well, I am not an "intensive user", and getting to my little sister's screen to explain her something is an operation I won't be doing so often, but as a mild and unexpert user, really I can say I saw the various VNC previously, I never managed to input the energy necessary to set them up.

On the contrary, I just launched Astroview/Astroshare "to see", and I was up and running in five mn. Astroshare may lack many brilliant features compared to VNC... but it is SIMPLE. And, really, the cheapest shareware I bought in the last 12 months :-)

ANONYMOUS  How is this software a better alternative to VNC/CotVNC combination? Configuring OSX VNC is minimal and I have been using it control my moms computer from 2 states away. Besides, it's free. Is Astroshare really worth the $40 over OSX VNC and Chicken of the VNC?
